Va lay A P Hunter VK2YS Silent Key: Craig Huth VK2ISS / VK4SSB It is great sadness that we record the passing of Craig Huth VK2ISS / VK4SSB on the 30th of June 2014 at only 47 years of age following a stroke. Craig was a well known and admired announcer at 2RE and MAXFM in Taree. Craig grew up on the land at Bundaberg. He began his radio broadcasting career in Darwin before moving to Wangaratta, Deniliquin and Moree and then to 2RE at Taree 9 years ago. Craig was a great worker for the community. He was the driving force behind 2RE's Christmas Train that raised more than $200,000 in five years for the children's ward at Manning Hospital as well as retirement homes in the area. Craig was very active on air. Many amateurs had the privilege of regular on air contacts with him as VK4SSB and more recently as VK2ISS. As well as HF, Craig was active on VHF, UHF and microwaves. His callsigns reflected his passionate interests. He was a regular on the Great Lakes, Taree and Port Macquarie repeaters. The International Space Station had special significance to Craig, having worked the ISS. He created a great deal of interest in the ISS on his radio program last year when he had 10 students from Chatham Public School speak live on air with Commander Mike Finke on board the International Space Station via a telebridge from Goddard Space Centre. Craig regularly promoted Amateur Radio as a hobby on air. He kept abreast of local and international activities. Each year he mentioned the Oxley Region Amateur Radio Club annual Field Days at Port Macquarie during his programs. Craig will be sadly missed by both the Amateur Radio fraternity and the wider community. Funeral details have yet to be announced. ARNSW BALUN DAY REVIEW Last Sunday 29 June, ARNSW held a balun day spectacular event at 63 Quarry Road, Dural. Commencing with breakfast, consisting of bacon and egg rolls, we progressed to the main event. Mark Blackmore VK2XOF gave a well-researched and informative presentation on the theory and practice of the 1:1 and 4:1 balun. The format was power-point, and the presentation consisted of a number of coloured slides, mixed with a clear explanation of the topic. The presentation was followed by lunch, a sausage sizzle with ice cream for dessert. The culmination of the day was the attendees actually constructing their very own balun, under the watchful eyes of more experienced balun constructors. The raffle prize, a pair of wire strippers, was won by Stewart VK2FVSW, a popular win, considering he was one of the presenters at last year’s radio fest at our Dural site. For those who did not attend last Sunday Mark’s presentation is on the ARNSW website. Submitted by Al Hirschel vk2kam for ARNSW Renovations. There has been little change in the past week but we have been able to restore the broadcast transmitter co-ax's and have the 40 metre AM signal operational along with 30, 20 and 10 metres.
