Solar thermal power
stations – unlimited
green energy
Solar thermal power stations (parabolic trough power plants) bundle
sunlight using parabola-shaped mirrors.
TRM-piles solving problem with incorrect working platform.
TRM-piles driven into
medium hard rock.
A receiver pipe located in the linear focus of
the mirrors captures the solar radiation thus
warming the liquid stored in the evaporator.
The steam thus generated drives the turbines
thereby producing clean energy. In many
countries around the world these solar power
stations play a very lucrative and forwardlooking role. The precision of the orientation
of the parabolic troughs toward the solar
radiation determines the efficiency of
energy production.
Consequently the proper establishment of
the foundations underlying these parabolic
trough power plants is a must. The best
possible equalization of the various geological
conditions is therefore of highest importance.
Using cast iron piles by Tiroler Rohre GmbH,
tolerances can be kept to a minimum, which
significantly shortens the construction
times of CSP projects while supporting
efficient energy production after power
station startup.

TRM ductile cast piles –
guaranteed positional accuracy
CSP projects require utmost precision during realisation. Thus the station
must be oriented precisely in the north-south axis.
Accuracy of ± three millimeters in position and ± 20 millimeters in height
must be guaranteed.
The TRM ductile pile is driven with an accuracy of ± 40 millimeters. The top few centimeters
are bored out and the connecting part itself – the pin – is inserted using a total station
with an accuracy of ± three millimeters in position and ± 20 millimeters in height. Depending
on their design, the pins are fixed and joined.

TRM ductile pile – adaptability is its strength
The TRM ductile pile is adaptable, whether
open-ended, with a pile tip or grouted as
a end-bearing pile – each pile type can be
produced with the same equipment and at
the same speed.
Unbeatable leveling precision using the
TRM ductile pile
CSP projects require extensive groundworks.
Requiring footprint areas of up to 3.5 x 2
kilometers depending on ground conditions
can result in more than 1,000,000 m3 of
groundworks. Leveling the work platform
precisely frequently poses serious problems for
the EPC contractor. Imprecisions can be easily
compensated for by using ductile piles, and they
solve the challenge of inexact platform heights
on their own.
Ductile pile used where geotechnical soil
analyses is limited
Frequently there is little time for
comprehensive soil analyses.
A few soil samples have to suffice, but
nevertheless the CSP project has to be
implemented with the highest precision,
where geotechnical soil analyses and
information is limited.
The system indicates how deep the pile must
be driven to achieve the calculated loadbearing capacity.

High load-bearing
capacity is critical
Parabolic mirrors have a low dead weight, but must maintain their position
despite wind speeds of 140 km/h in order to continue to produce energy despite
difficult wind conditions. The huge surfaces move into a locked position only
above a wind speed of 140 km/h.
No mess and high productivity.
CSP mirrors at 12:00 noon position.
Precision work for minimal tolerances
Precision work is vital, since the parabolic mirrors are the heart of a solar thermal complex and must
be mounted exactly in both position and height in order to guarantee 100 percent effectiveness.
Deviation of only one degree reduces efficiency by
about five percent.
Guaranteed short construction times and
rapid return on investment
The faster a CSP can be completed and connected to the grid, the more lucrative the project. The
ROI (Return on Investment) is the decisive factor for investors and operators. As a rule, systems
producing 100 megawatts have over 50,000 pile points that have to be produced in the shortest
construction time. The TRM ductile pile is a reliable guarantor of a short construction time and rapid
amortization! 100 piles per day and unit are the standard. Using simple and commercially available
equipment, the construction company can always expedite as needed and fulfill the customer’s
deadline with the greatest satisfaction.

CSP solar power in
South Africa
CSP plants are used in the so-called sun belt, since these desert-like regions
enjoy the required high direct solar radiation. CSP (Concentrated Solar Power)
employs mirrors that focus the sun’s rays on a heat transfer medium (generally
thermal oil or even water) located in a receiver pipe; these mirrors can focus
the rays up to a ninety-fold magnitude.

and concreting.
52800 piles and 1 satisfied customer.
The energy obtained can be used to generate
steam, heat, cooling or electricity. A CSP plant
producing electricity using a steam turbine is
called a solar thermal power station.
CSP offers an infinite potential of thermal
energy obtained from the sun. Energy
produced by CSP systems can be easily
stored as heat and later released
and consumed. South Africa decided to
become increasingly active in the field of solar
energy in order to make power production
less dependent on fossil fuels – especially
coal. Coal deposits in South Africa are
rather limited. Three decisive factors play an
important role in the construction of solar
thermal power stations: sun, because water
must be vaporized. Consequently, sufficient
quantities of water are required; the third
factor is a substation to transmit the energy
produced to the end customer.
In South Africa these prerequisites are
available to operate this type of power plant
economically.
In the Northern Cape region bordering
Namibia, the sun shines 320 days a year, and
the 2,160 kilometer-long Orange River, the
longest in the country, supplies a sufficient
volume of water. The KaXu Solar One project
is that country’s step into the future of energy
production.

Safe and very flexible foundation elements – the construction industry
can benefit from simple, safe and universally usable prefabricated driven pile
systems. TRM‘s full displacement pile is driven into the ground
to effectively and safely transmit the loads from the structure down to
competent stratum.
Structural Engineering Applications
Foundation of buildings: Advantages of using fast compact and
mobile equipment giving short project execution time in inner city
districts. The use of smaller diameter piles with high load capacity
enables big savings of foundation concrete quantities in both piles
and sub-structure elements.
Industrial construction
Foundations of pre-fabricated buildings: safe load transfer with
piles integrated into small pre-cast concrete pilecaps. Highly
suited for lightweight structures sensitive to total and differential
settlement. Wind and other structural loads are safely transferred
into the ground.
South Africa: CSP – Solar 100 MW
Bridge foundations construction
Foundations of bridge abutments and piers: simple and fast
movement around building sites. Bending moments are transferred through pile supports and horizontal forces are transferred
through raked piles.
Pipeline supported on piles
Foundation of pipelines: piles control settlement to acceptable
limits in pipeline and hydraulic construction works where soils have
limited load-bearing capability. Software-supported dimensioning
of pile-supported pipeline systems is available.
Slope reinforcement
Austria: 14 units Vestas V90 – 28 MW
Reinforcement of slopes which have a high risk of sliding.
Piles can be inserted vertically or almost horizontally in accordance with design requirements in order to achieve slope
stability.

Silo foundation
Foundation of silos, tower cranes, pylons and transmission poles: piles can support compression and tensile loads where tall
buildings exposed to cyclical wind loadings are founded on pile
supports which include additional tensile reinforcement.
Construction pit reinforcement
Retaining walls in the vicinity of existing structures. The piles
are installed to well below the construction pit base and form a
perimeter wall with pile heads fully connected and supported, for
instance with an anchored reinforced concrete capping beam or
floor slabs.
Buoyancy protection
Foundations of sedimentation tanks, subways and construction
pits where the ground water level fluctuates. The reinforced concrete floor slab is protected against buoyancy by additional tensile
reinforcement connected between the piles and the slab.
Austria : Spa “Grimming” with 500 Geothermal
probes on 22,000 m2
Retro-fit foundations
Underpinning of existing buildings: for industrial buildings where
old foundations are reinforced or new foundations are retro-fitted
to provide support for additional new loads with pile installation
works done under restricted head room working space.
Italy: Noise barrier for Railways - total length 4.5 km
