Issue: 100 w/e 17th October 2014 Newsletter Message from the Head Dear Parents & Carers I would like to congratulate all of the children this week on their excellent behaviour in spite of the wet weather – a very big ‘ ‘well done’’ to everybody for coping so well. Please ensure your child has appropriate wet weather clothing so they are well protected against the elements. The Larkswood values have been used to very good effect this week, particularly the value of ‘Partnership’ whereby parents have been working together with staff to organise the LPSA quiz night and the job fair which was a huge success. It is very important that your child arrives at school on time each morning to ensure they are maximising their learning time. So, getting their clothes ready, setting an alarm clock and allowing plenty of time for your journey will make sure that the children get the very best punctual start to the day. I would like to remind all visitors wishing to access school that they must report to the main reception area to ensure that our safeguarding procedures are followed and helping to ensure that all of the children are safe in school at all times – thank you. Kind regards Lynne Harrowell Larkswood welcomes Dav Pilkey, author of Captain Underpants! This week Larkswood Primary was happy to welcome Dav Pilkey, the author of the Captain Underpants series to the school. Years 2, 3, and 4 were so excited to see and listen to one of their favourite authors. Dav told the children about growing up in his home town of Ohio in America and how he started writing and drawing the character of Captain Underpants. Dav drew pictures of the different characters from his books and those lucky enough to guess won the drawing for their class. We are very lucky to have such great, original illustrations in the school. During the week the children designed pants for Captain Underpants and a selection were chosen to receive a certificate and their very own mini illustration drawn by Dav. Afterwards the children queued patiently to meet Dav who kindly gave autographs and signed children’s own Captain Underpants books. It was such a great afternoon. Thank you Captain Underpants. See more pictures on our school website. Please go to the Gallery page on the school website for more pictures Our attendance target at Larkswood! As from September 2014 our school target for attendance is set at 100%. It is proven that excellent attendance leads to great results and engaged children. We look forward to working with all our parents and carers this year to achieve our goal at Larkswood Primary. The Larkswood Attendance Tree Ollie the Owl lives in an old tree in the heart of Larkswood. Sometimes Ollie gets lonely. The children can help Ollie. If a class has a weekly attendance rate of 95-100% their class name will go on Ollie’s attendance tree. Every time a class reaches a 100% attendance rate for the whole week a class butterfly is placed at the top of the tree to keep Ollie company! See what’s involved in being an active member of the LPSA. A successful and harmonious PTA is at the heart of every school and ours is no exception. The AGM is an important event in the LPSA calendar. A new Chair will be voted in. The LPSA constitution is reviewed and future plans are made. Be a part of it. It’s the time of year when it’s all too easy to pick up a cold or worse still the flu. Help everyone to stay fighting fit by covering our mouths when we cough, not spitting, use a tissue when we sneeze and washing our hands regularly. It’s easy to do and it’s polite too – Thank you EYFS TOAD ALERT: The nursery children found a toad this week who had made himself at home in the nursery garden. The toad was so happy there that although he was put in a safer place he came back again in the afternoon. This time the afternoon children and nursery team took a trip to the pond in the Larkswood wildlife area where he was left to have a nice swim to stretch his legs and look for a tasty toad snack. This week on the EYFS news………. PEOPLE WHO HELP US: A paramedic and police officer (parent) came to visit on Monday morning. The children were able to try on the paramedic’s reflective jacket, hold the special equipment and listen to stories. The children were given a goodie bag at the end of the visit that had books and pencils inside. The children thought of their own questions to ask and listened intently to the answers. Mrs Nicolaou said that she was very proud of how all the children listened and behaved during the visit. In the afternoon excitement grew as Reception, teachers and parents visited the local fire station. The children were told what life is like for a fireman/woman and were able to try out the hose and look at the fire engine. It was a great day. “ I am so glad I came I have already applied for three jobs" Positive Feedback "Wow you have been fantastic, I was so worried but now I cannot wait to get back to work" "I came on the off chance of getting some help with a job problem and I am so happy because I got some real help thank you" The job fair was a great success. There were experts on employment who gave some brilliant advice to our parents as well as a massive job bus which had current jobs and a amazing computer suite to help our parents apply straight away for some great positions. Larkswood Primary Sports News & Fixtures... Clubs, Clubs and more Clubs First of all, I just want to thank all of the children and parents for being so engaged with all of the different clubs we now have at Larkswood. From KS1 Football to KS2 Girls Football to Cheerleading Club, we really are aiming for the Sainsbury School Games Gold Kitemark for next year. In additional, all of the participants have taken part and demonstrated the school values – Go Larkswood! The KS1 Football had their first session this week, and I was very impressed with their attitude, behaviour and their willingness to give everything a go. Some children in particular showed a great touch on the ball, and I am looking forward to working with them as they progress through Year 3 up to 6. Just to reassure all of the parents – the register for the KS1 Football Club will change over at the start of the Spring Term so different children will get an opportunity to join. Competitions Unfortunately, the boy’s football league was due to start on Monday. However, because of the torrential downpour throughout the whole day, it was postponed until a later date. Once I have information regarding the new date, I will endeavour to let all of the teams (children and parents) know. Our picture shows the KS1 and KS2 children enjoying the KS1 Cross Country last week! The Girls Football League kicks off next week (Monday 20th October 2014) with two matches against Thorpe Hall and Chingford Hall. This game will be played at GOALS, Chingford and the girls who have been chosen will be given a letter asking parents/ carers for permission to play. All of the girls who are playing will require their parents or carers to transport them to and from the venue as we look to ensure the safeguarding of all of the children in the school. This year’s Orion Harriers Primary Schools Invitation Cross Country will take place on Saturday 8th November 2014, over at Chingford Plains. I have spoken to all of the children in KS2 about this event, and I would like to enter as many children who would like to enter. This event will rely heavily on parents/carers to transport their child to and from the competition to make it a success, so please help your child and the school. I have entered the Year 5 and 6 into the Sportshall Competition. This will be on Wednesday 19 th November 2014, and it will take place at Redbridge Sports Centre throughout the day. The training for this competition will take place during Athletics Club – this takes place every Friday after school. In addition, I have entered the Year 1 and 2 into their Sportshall Competition. This will take place on Wednesday 3 rd December 2014, and it will also take place at Redbridge Sports Centre. Please keep an eye out for letters to those children who successfully make the teams. Spare, unwanted PE kits If you have any old, unwanted PE kits (white t-shirt, navy/black shorts, shorts and plimsolls), you can kindly donate them to the school. These will be used as emergency kits for children who not have their kits. Thank you in advance for your generous donations. Larkswood needs you! Are you interested in helping the school? Are you keen in promoting the development of Sports and PE within Larkswood Primary School? Are you able to help transport children to and from sporting competitions? If so and because we want to ensure the safeguarding of all of the children in the school, please speak to the office about obtaining a DBS check and a volunteer form to make you eligible to help. Onwards and upwards! Mr Hau Larkswood Thank you to all the Larkswood parents and carers that saved the Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers for Larkswood. We collected the highest amount of any school in the borough. The grand total was 49108. How amazing! We have traded in our vouchers and ordered lots of sport equipment for the school.
