WELCOME TO THE
2014-2015 SEASON
Unfortunately our new team, Southport Old Links have not reentered. At the May committee meeting it was decided to run two
divisions of nine teams playing each other twice (home and away i.e.
sixteen matches) respectively for the first and second division titles.
On the completion of this stage, there again will be a handicap
league in which each first division side will play each second division
side (i.e. nine matches giving a total of twenty-five for the season)
Zetland have reverted to playing home fixtures on Monday nights,
FINALS NIGHT/PRESENTATION EVENING
At the Annual Presentation and Finals Night, held at Ainsdale Sands
on 29th April, Zetland and Wings beat Casablanca and Quads
respectively in the finals of the Don Standing Cup and the Maurice
Jefferies Plate. Thanks are due to Keith Mulhearn and Warrington
Quiz League for setting the questions.

Charity Nomination
At the Handicap Cup/Pairs Competition on Tuesday 20th May
at The Sands, Ainsdale Treasurer Geoff Willde presented a
cheque for £447 to Yvonne Williams of Southport Kidney
Fund in memory of Bernie Blaney (Zetland). Yvonne is the
wife of S&F Vice Chair David Williams (Fisherman’s Rest).
The HANDICAP CUP was won for the first time by Wings who
beat E Street Band in the final 48-43. In the semi-finals Wings
and E Street Band had comfortable victories over Zetland and
Formby Pavilion respectively.
This completed the most successful season ever for Wings
who also won the S&F Division One title as well as the
Maurice Jefferies Plate. Another first was the Merseyside
Challenge Cup in which they beat Oxton Conservatives
(Wirral) in the final.
At the AGM in April, in memory of
Paul Ford (St Jeromes), Nuclear
Medicine Research (Royal Liverpool
Hospital) was chosen as the
designated charity for the 2014/2015
season.

In addition Dag Griffiths reached the final of the MIMIR (individual) competition for the seventh time and
finished runner-up to World Champion and Egghead Pat Gibson (Ormskirk).
He also reached the final of Radio Four’s Brain of Britain but was unable to reproduce the form he had
displayed in both his heat and semi-final. However, in a closely contested final only four points separated
the four contestants.
