California Mastitis Test Scoring
Symbol
SuggestedDescription of visible reaction
meaning
Many new mastitis infections occur shortly before or on the day
of calving. Incorporate the California Mastitis Test (CMT)
to screen fresh cows for subclinical mastitis infections.
NNegative
Mixture remains liquid, homogeneous,
with no evidence of thickening.
TTrace
The slight thickening that forms is seen
best by tipping the paddle back and forth and observing the mixture as it flows over the bottom of the cup. Trace reactions tend to disappear with continued rotation of the paddle.
1
A distinct thickening of the liquid forms,
but there is no tendency toward gel
formation. With some milk, the thickening may disappear after rotating the paddle more than 20 seconds.
2Distinct positive
Mixture thickens immediately, and a gel
formation is suggested. As the mixture is swirled, it tends to move toward the center, exposing the bottom of the outer edge of the cup. When the motion is stopped, the mixture levels out and covers the bottom of the cup.
3
gel is formed, which causes the
A
surface to look like a partially fried egg.
Usually you’ll see a central peak that
remains projecting above the mass,
even after the rotation of the paddle
is stopped.
guidelines include:
• Use the CMT on the first or second day after calving to catch any new infections as soon as possible
• Compare the status of each quarter with CMT scores recorded at dry off to distinguish new
infections from old ones
• Culture individual quarters that score CMT 2 or higher
• Culture, but do not treat, old, chronic quarters that did not clear during the dry period
• Based upon culture results and veterinarian
recommendations, treat appropriate quarters with
an approved lactating antibiotic
To ensure more uniform results when reading CMTs, proper
screening techniques must be established. Use the following
guide to help train employees on CMT use and scoring.
Weak positive
7 steps to achieve an accurate CMT
1. Strip four streams of foremilk before stripping into CMT paddle cups.
2. Strip approximately 1/2 teaspoon of milk from each quarter into the respective CMT paddle cups.
3. Add an equal amount of CMT reagent to each cup.
4. Rotate the paddle in a circular motion to thoroughly mix the contents.
5. Read the test in approximately 10 seconds while still rotating.
6. Interpret CMT scores using chart at right.
7. Rinse the paddle thoroughly with water before taking the next test.
