Delivering clinical research to make patients, and the NHS, better
Welcome to the NIHR CRN: North Thames!
CRN Now
From Lyn Chitty, Clinical Director
At last, all the hard work of the transition team has yielded
results and the CRN: North Thames came into being on 1st
April. We have our core team largely in place and give details of
names later in this newsletter. We are still in the process of
appointing some posts, some of which are advertised or
shortlisted already. We have appointed most of our Clinical
Research Specialty Leads and will be re-advertising in the
summer to try and fill the remaining posts with enthusiastic
clinicians who are keen to help us engage with partners across
the whole geography.
We have submitted our draft annual and finance plans to the
NIHR. The main focus, as ever, must be to make research
accessible to as many of our patients as possible. In addition to
generally increasing recruitment, this year the areas highlighted
are dementia, in line with the government objectives, and
recruitment in primary care and the community. Maintaining, or
preferably increasing, recruitment is a priority for us in NT. Our
budget for 2015-16 will be based on our performance from now
until the end of September. This year we have set a target to
increase recruitment by 5% overall. We think we can achieve
this but, in reality given the size of our network (we cover 10%
of the NHS), we need to increase recruitment by 10-15% to
maintain our place as one of the best, if not the best, performing
CRN. You can see where we are in comparison with other
networks on the graph to the right.
The money is tight this year as we have additional expenses
related to this being our transition year. However, we have a
huge resource in our large number of research delivery staff.

Over the next few weeks myself, James Lyddiard (COO) and
various members of the core Divisional staff and Clinical
Research Specialty Leads will be visiting all organisations to get
to know the research and the RM&G staff. We are keen to work
with you to identify how best to use the resources available to
optimise recruitment in all areas.
We have a lot more ideas, including some around education,
developing the workforce and PCPIE, and various work streams
will emerge as we progress. If you have any ideas please do get
in touch as we are keen to develop new innovative ways of
working.

Where are we now?
By James Lyddiard, COO
We have our senior team appointed and they are in the process
of ensuring a smooth hand over of current work whilst forging
relationships with the Clinical Leadership team and establishing
working practices for the new Divisional workforce. Moving
forward it will be our six Research Delivery Managers and their
teams who will be pivotal in promoting the CRN across the
geography, establishing links within our Partner Organisations,
getting to know the workforce, the potential for recruitment
and developing effective models of partnership working.
At the moment we are still physically scattered across the
network, largely working from our old offices. However I am
delighted to say that we will start moving into our new office at
170, Tottenham Court Road in May. This will help us coordinate
the work better and develop an effective team. We have
provided details of the divisional teams, but no contact details!
This is because the ‘electronic’ migration of the team is taking a
while and we will all shortly have new email addresses. Rather
than give you details that would be redundant in a few weeks
(we hope!) we ask that you contact us via the generic North
Thames email address: [email protected], putting
the person you want to contact in the subject line. Emma
Grimshaw is manning this address and will forward your email
to the relevant person. We hope his will avoid confusion, but we
will circulate a list with accurate contact details as soon it is
available.
Meet your Network
Introducing……
Over the coming months we’ll be introducing some of the key
management staff and telling you a little about their
backgrounds. This month we are introducing some of our senior
Executive Team.
Masuma Harrison, Industry Operations Manager
Masuma has a varied research
background. Following on from her
own research in mental health, she
worked in a clinical trials unit before
moving into research management.
She is an experienced research
manager with several years in cancer
and recently in renal, GI, Surgery,
MSK, Dermatology, Respiratory,
Infectious diseases, Hepatology,
Injuries & emergencies, Anaesthesia
& Critical care. Her focus is now on the commercial portfolio,
where she is building and facilitating our relationship with
Industry to ensure that CRN: North Thames is the first choice for
Industry trials and is able to successfully deliver them.
Alastair Nicholson, Head of RM&G
As Head of RM&G for CRN: North
Thames Alastair is responsible for
implementing and overseeing the
NHS Permission (R&D approval)

research management for more than
12 years, having joined his local R&D
Office in 2001. He subsequently worked for the Cancer
Research Network before joining Central and East London
CLRN in 2008.
John Sheedy, Head of Finance & Information
John has worked in the NHS in a
variety of financial, research and
contractual roles in the context of
specialist and tertiary Trusts since
2009.
He brings considerable
experience and expertise in the broad
area of research finance with a
particular
emphasis
on
cost
attribution and pre-grant application
support. He has also developed financial reporting systems in
both an NHS and HEI context whilst working at GOSH and
ICH. John enjoys a good rapport with the investigator
community and has contributed to several successful grant
applications across an array of disease areas. He is very
approachable and committed to ensuring North Thames
becomes an exemplar within the CRN.
