We Mean Green
Neighborhood
Peace Garden
T
he We Mean Green
Neighborhood Peace Garden
began in 2010 as a CAPS
“positive loitering”
campaign. Community
members engaged in a very
positive outdoor activity on
a blighted, often dangerous
corner encourages concerned
neighbors to become more
proactive and aware of
conditions and situations that
threaten quality of life around
their home.
The Peace Pole in the center
of The Mean Green Neighborhood Garden as well as
the twenty-foot table in the
Hospitality Garden invite
neighborliness, peacefulness,
respect for the environment
and for one another. The national organization, Neighborhoods USA, awarded 1st Place
to this 75th Street and Coles
Avenue garden project for
Revitalization and Beautification in a single neighborhood.
We Mean Green NeighborhoodPeace Garden and The
Hospitality Garden are creating a peaceful, artful incentive
to revitalizing a once vibrant
street. This corner provides an
attractive gateway to South
Shore’s central retail corridor,
poised for renewal as the
community participates in
Main Street, USA.

PlayStreets Chicago & South Shore
T
his year South Shore Chamber, Inc. joined resources with Active Transportation Alliance, World Sport Chicago and
Chicago Children’s Museum to provide the community with many opportunities to participate in free, outdoor activities for all ages. These activities included balancing bikes for toddlers, basketball,
jump rope, soccer, volleyball, flexibility training, organized games such as sharks &
Minnows, Take the Bait, Onefish Twofish Redfish Bluefish, and many more. SSCI held
8 events throughout the summer from 11:00am-3:00pm and lunch was provided
by Catholic Charities. While the children enjoyed outdoor fun, we kept the parents
engaged with Parent Cafés. These are small discussion groups with topics ranging
from communication skills, conflict resolution, and keys to strengthen families. We
hope to participate in this successful program again next year.
J
ohn Coleman, Owner of Pump High Energy Fitness has provided a much
needed service to the South Shore community Affordable Fitness Training.
Conveniently located at 1933 E. 71st St, Pump High Energy offers training and
athletic programs for all ages. He doesn’t believe in the expensive contracts
that lock clients in year after year. He offers flexible membership plans as low
as $20.00 per month where clients can come and work out independently or 3
personal training sessions for $35.00, 1 hour each. At these rates who can’t afford
to exercise? Mr. Coleman has set profits aside for the greater good of the community, “I enjoy helping clients reach their fitness goals and helping them get to
the next level in their chosen sport”, says Mr. Coleman. He offers a sports training
program for youth that includes conditioning, strength training and fundamentals. He’s also a mentor for many of the youth that work out at his gym. “I offer
exercise to these kids as an alternative to violent behavior. It’s a way to keep their
mind on something positive and to relieve stress. Believe it or not, kids have a lot
of stress on them too. So while we’re strength training I offer personal advise and
conflict resolutions to many of the challenges they’re facing. Hopefully my advice
will keep them from committing a crime to solve a minor problem. And it’s always
good to start kids off with healthy lifestyle habits. For most of these kids exercise
and eating right will always be a part of their life, if they start early.

he South Shore Chamber is in the process of Reconstituting the Special Services Area (SSA) #42 which serves the 71st St/Stony Island district. At the
end of 2015 the current SSA will expire. We’ve hired a full service urban planning firm that will assure the renewal of SSA #42 is accomplished successfully.
The Reconstitution will afford the South Shore Chamber and the SSA Commission with a chance to assess the performance of the SSA over its life and to
identify changes that may be desirable to better serve the community. Within the next few months South Shore Chamber will host two community meetings and a public hearing to engage taxpayer outreach and explain the process to its constituents.
The SSA #42 was created in 2006 by the collaborative efforts of 5th Ward Alderman Leslie A. Hairston and The South Shore Chamber Inc.
