Introduction
Digital Empowerment Foundation & Public Interest Registry organized an eNGO Summit at Basirhat, North 24 Parganas
in collaboration with its State Partner Sukalyan Welfare Society. This event was organized on 14 th September’2014 at
Basirhat Town Hall. In this summit many Govt. officials were present as the guests.
60 Non-profit Organizations attended the workshop and have applied for the .org websites. They will all now be online
through eNGO programme. Out of the participants 6 NGOs had previously registered on the eNGO network and are
already online. There were some NGOs from Sundarban Areas like,







3 NGO’s from different states like Uttar Pradesh and Orissa have also participated, they are:

 Association for consumer Action on Safety and Help (Uttar Pradesh)
Sukalyan Welfare Society hosted the event with full enthusiasm and spirit of
empowerment along with its team members.
Objectives
The main objectives of the Basirhat Workshop were the following:



To see that maximum number of organizations find a virtual identity and are visible to global and
national audience by having their own website.
To provide NGOs with a digital or web space-in local languages and/or English-, increasing their
visibility.
To empower NGOs with useful ICT tools that can facilitate and enhance their daily activities and
maximize the outreach.

Essential training in webpage maintenance, content uploading, correction and design pattern for their
developed websites under the eNGO initiative.

Demography of Workshop Area
As per the 2011 census, Basirhat Urban Agglomeration had a population of 144,891, out of which 73,491 were males and
71,400 were females. The 0–6 year’s population was 12,578. Effective literacy rate for the 7+ population was 86.88 per
cent. Bengali is the principal language spoken in the area.
History: Basirhat has a long history of farmer's movements like the Tebhaga movement. Freedom fighter Dinesh
Chandra Majumder was born here in 1907. Noted industrialist, Sir Rajen Mukherjee was born at Bhabla (also spelt
Bhyabla) near Basirhat.
Transportation: Basirhat was connected with Barasat by the narrow gauge Barasat Basirhat Railway operated by
Martin's Light Railways. It was closed down in 1955 and subsequently converted to broad gauge. The railway tracks in
the region have been electrified and there are EMUs services to Sealdah and Hasnabad provided by the Kolkata Suburban
Railway. Bus services to Kolkata and other places are also available.
