With the motto of ‘Inform, Communicate and Empower,’ Digital Empowerment Foundation
(DEF) started its journey in the month of December, 2002. Based out of New Delhi and
registered as not-for-profit under the “Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, the effort at DEF
has been to find sustainable Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions including
digital and new media to address digital divide in under-served and unreached regions and
communities. With a non-political approach, it was founded to contribute to an enabling social
and economic order in India as well as in developing societies with the need based support of
ICT tools and means. With ground work since 2003, DEF has reached over 22 States and 8
countries.

The Genesis of K-Link Foundation lies in collaboration and association that were built after postearthquake of Gujarat in 2001 with an objective to mainstream ICT into Development sector.
And worked as a technical arm of Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan since August’2001
Unprecedented gains in advancing human development in recent decades came largely from
technological breakthrough. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have led to
healthier life, greater social reforms and social freedoms, increased knowledge and more
productive livelihoods.
K-Link Foundation is registered as “not for Profit” organization and working to mainstream ICT
into Development sector since July 2012.

As our name implies, we exist to serve the public interest online. Our globally diverse team is
committed to providing a stable online platform where everyone has a voice. Based in Reston,
Virginia, Public Interest Registry is a not-for profit organization created by the Internet Society
(ISOC), originally to manage .org.
Background:The eNGO programme, a national movement, is a joint effort of Digital Empowerment
Foundation (DEF) and Public Interest Registry (PIR) to make grassroots organisations ICT
enabled by providing a web-enabled platform through free website, domain name, and
providing capacity building through the eNGO training programme.
The eNGO programme strives to empower more than 3.3 million NGOs and Self Help Groups to
create a virtual identity and increase their visibility for national and global outreach. eNGO
programme offers websites in any local Indian language.
With this focus, the Interactive Seminar "Internet & web technology for NGOs", organized by
Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and supported by Public Interest Registry with the
locally supported by K-Link Foundation, Gujarat on August 2nd , 2014 was a timely initiative to
help the NGOs in understanding about the means they can employ to make themselves visible
to and connect with donors globally in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Objective of eNGO Workshop: Maximize adoption of Internet and Digital tools of empowerment for
Grassroots organizations.
 Providing free website to all registered NGOs.
 Provide training on the importance of ICT, internet and web tools in the
development of NGOs.
 Provide training on the use of the internet, email, and social media tools.
 Take expression of interest for .NGO domain.
 The importance of ENGO programme and the benefits of being in the ENGO
network.
Practical Session:Mr. Kantisen Shroff as chief guest inaugurated the session and said that
Internet has a role to play in promoting the cause of NGOs development and
that there are many ways that Internet can help NGOs to promote commerce
and business. He said that NGOs need to be encouraged to come to the
mainstream of NGOs development through various channels including through
the Internet platform. Having websites can help NGOs to leverage multiple
gains.
Anand Kumar, Trainer from Digital Empowerment Foundation delivered an
introductory speech which included the objectives of eNGO which is to
communicate and outreach with the world, raising fund of the organization,
establishing partnership and direct linking with other institutions, human
resource support, giving voice to local issues and so on and so forth.
Manoj Solanki, from K-Link Foundation has presented the use of various
technologies like GIS, MIS and Mobile technology, in context of rural
development.
eNGO programme aims to provide a digital or a web space in local languages
and/or English to empower grassroots organizations with useful ICT tools to:
 Create a web platform for information collection.
 To maintain transparency in organization.
 Facilitate communication and outreach of their objectives and activities to
funder.
 Help create market linkages for various communities served by these NGOs.
 Increase visibility to national and global audience for wider recognition and
connectivity.

organizations registered for website development. And all 70 organisations has
Submitted their Expression of Interest for dotNGO domain.
