Dear Students,
I hope by now everyone has settled in well in your classes. Many of you have already met with your EHP advisors and taken advantage of tutoring
services. If you have not had the chance to stop by the office, please do so soon to
meet our new Academic Advisor, Lauren Cappuccio, and to meet out new Professional Writing Tutor, Rob Gosselin.
Every semester we like to update your Individual Graduation Plan(IGP) to ensure

Academic Advisor’s Corner
Hello!
I hope everyone’s school year is off to a great start! For those who I
haven’t met yet I wanted to take this chance to introduce myself, my
name is Lauren Cappuccio and I am the new Academic Advisor for EHP. As an alum of two
TRiO programs myself, I am very excited to be joining the EHP community!
For those of you who’d like to know a little about me, I earned my bachelors in elementary
education from the University of Maine. Afterward I took a year off and did a year of AmeriCorps service at Southern Maine Community College. Later I went to grad school at Merrimack College where I met Jason! Most recently I was a college counselor for the nonprofit
Bottom Line (in Worcester) and worked with college students all across Massachusetts. Some
fun facts about me are that I love baking/cooking, crafts (#PinterestAddicted), painting, and
the color teal.
To those that I have had the chance to meet and get to know, thank you for making me feel
welcome!
I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you! Please stop in and say hello!
Best wishes,
Lauren
From the Desk of the
Career Coordinator...
Welcome Back EHP-ers!!!!
This is always a very exciting time of year. The EHP staff is ecstatic to be seeing all of you moving back, visiting the office, sharing a laugh with us, and
preparing for a ROCKSTAR semester!!! For those of you who are new to our
program…. WELCOME! It is wonderful to see our established students welcoming and getting to know the newest members of our family. To each and
every one of you, I remind you to commit to your goals, work hard every day,
and enjoy the journey!
For those of you struggling to figure out a best fit major for your goals, remember that EHP has
a multitude of strategies to help you find some clarity. Additionally, here are some things to
consider:
Be aware of your values. Success means different things to different people and everyone is
motivated differently. A huge salary is a great incentive, but does not lead to fulfilling
work for everyone. Be aware of what’s important to you, your interests, and what activities satisfy those values and interests. You will feel most committed to a major and a job
that reflects your values. At the end of the day, you should feel proud to say, “I work as
a _______.”
Your instincts are valid. There are numerous emotions that you may feel while deciding on
a major. Don’t be afraid to experience those emotions. Recognition of them may help
guide you in the right direction.
Consider your influences. We all have groups and individuals that influence decisions that
we make. It is no different for choosing a major. Friends, family, our culture, and other
groups’ opinions are valuable information for you to consider, but remember that it is
not the only influence. Remember, you have your own values, goals, interests, and investment in your future. Remember to listen to your voice, too.
Explore. You may be surprised to discover the true breadth of your interests and passions
once you’ve explored all that is available to you. Join new clubs. Volunteer. Participate
in activities you wouldn’t normally consider. Take a class unlike anything you’ve taken
before. In addition to helping you decide on a major, exploration of all Fitchburg State
has to offer will lead to higher motivation to be successful.
Utilize your human resources.
Your advisor. As a student in Expanding Horizons, you have multiple advisors
from whom you can gain insight. You have your EHP advisor and your academic advisor. These professionals are here to answer questions you have and help
point you in the right direction. You have an opportunity to map out different
options that will work best for you. Take advantage of that opportunity!
Faculty. Departmental faculty members know their programs inside and out. They
have great insight about the classes you will have to take, career options after
graduation, and program specifics that you may not have considered. Ask questions!
Other Students. Upperclass students can be a great resource for you to access. They understand best what it’s like to be in a program you are interested
in. They will provide insight into the classes you will have to take and other relevant information.
Meet the Tutors
Aaron Shumsky: Math Tutor
Hi everyone, in case we haven't met before, my name is Aaron Shumsky and this is my 2nd semester as a Professional Math Tutor with Expanding Horizons. My goal is to help you get through your math class.
So you know a little about me - I too went to Fitchburg State from 2003-2006, graduating with
a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. And I have been helping students in math for more than
eight years now, including positions at Mount Wachusett Community College and Tutor.com. I
care about your academic success - feel free to stop by the EHP office and reserve your spot!
Rob Gosselin: Writing Tutor
My name is Robert D. Gosselin and I’m the Professional Writing Tutor
for the Expanding Horizons Program at Fitchburg State University. I
chose to work for the program so I can help you become the best writer
you can possibly be. I truly believe that being a strong writer is an essential part of a good education, and I will work with you to help you
bring your writing skills to the next level. I graduated from Fitchburg
State University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in English, Professional Writing,
and I’m currently finishing my MA in English here at the university. In the past I’ve helped
many students successfully complete their writing and reading assignments, and I’m looking
forward to working with you on your journey to academic success.
Kathryn Zimmerman: Writing Tutor
I have been a tutor for the past year and a half in the Expanding Horizons Program. I am a severe special education and elementary education
major with a minor in English literature and IDIS. I am widely involved
at the university as well as surrounding areas. I am the Vice President of
Kappa Delta Pi an international honors society for education majors and
am very involved with surrounding school systems. I can tutor in general writing, select literature courses, psychology and sociology courses.
I am also one of the first academic coaches as part of an ongoing initiative to improve student success here at Fitchburg State University.
Meet the Peer Mentors

with a minor in Disability Studies. Becca transferred to Fitchburg State
from Landmark College last year but has already made it on the Dean’s
List! This is Becca’s first year as a Peer Mentor and her second year with
our program. She is an avid runner and loves to dance. Becca is an incredibly helpful and detail oriented person and is always available to answer
questions, take you to lunch, or just hang out.
Becca Fisher
Beckey Leveille is a senior majoring in Psychological Science with a
minor in Cognitive Science. This is Beckey’s first year as a Peer Mentor and her second year with our program. You will never see Beckey
without a smile on her face! Beckey is active in CACF (Campus Ambassadors Christian Fellowship and is also a Dean’s List student! Beckey Leveille
Narra Georges is a senior here at Fitchburg State majoring in Psychological Science with a concentration in Developmental Psychology.
Narra is a busy woman on this campus: she has worked for the Game
Room and still works for the Hammond Info Desk. Even with all that
work Narra has still kept academics a priority, she is a President’s List
student! Narra has a quirky style all her own and is proud of it, just as
we are proud of her.
Narra Georges
Matt Perez is a third year student majoring in Communications Media
with a concentration in Professional Communication. This is Matt’s first
year as a Peer Mentor and his third with our program. Matt is active in
CACF (Campus Ambassadors Christian Fellowship) and is an avid gamer. Feel free to challenge Matt to a game of Chutes and Ladders anytime!
(Or any game for that matter!) Matt is in charge of the EHP Facebook
and Twitter and will start up an Instagram account for us soon!
