Our Mission Statement: “Grace Lutheran Church is energized by the Holy
Spirit and nurtured through God’s Word and Sacrament to gather, feed,
and send people in the name of Jesus Christ.”
ABOUT TODAY’S THEME…Paul questions why we judge one another, since we all stand before
the judgment of God. Yet we do sin against one another, and Jesus’ challenge that we forgive
seventy-seven times reveals God’s boundless mercy. When we hear the words of forgiveness in
worship and sign ourselves with the cross, we are renewed in baptism to be signs of reconciliation
in the world.
A WORD ON THE READINGS…The First Lesson: After Jacob’s death, the brothers of Joseph
begged for forgiveness for the crime they had done against him. You intended to do me harm, Joseph said, but God used this as an opportunity to do good and save many lives. The Second Lesson: The Christian community in Rome has significant struggles with diversity. Here Paul helps us
understand that despite different practices in worship and personal piety, we do not judge one another. All Christians belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for all of us and will judge each of
us. The Gospel Lesson: When Peter asks about the limits of forgiveness, Jesus responds with a
parable that suggests human forgiveness should mirror the unlimited mercy of God.
The Loving Search for God: Contemplative Prayer & The Cloud of Unknowing
In 1974, Father William Meninger, a Trappist monk and
retreat master at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Mass.
found a dusty little book in the Abbey library, The Cloud
of Unknowing. As he read it he was delighted to discover that this anonymous 14th century book presented
contemplative meditation as a teachable, spiritual process enabling the ordinary person to enter and receive a
direct experience of union with God.
He quickly began teaching contemplative prayer according to The Cloud of Unknowing at the
Abbey Retreat House. One year later his workshop was taken up by his Abbot, Thomas
Keating, and Basil Pennington, both of whom had been looking for a teachable form of Christian contemplative meditation. Come and learn more about prayer and ways to deepen your
prayer relationship with God.

Awake, O Sleeper, Rise From Death
WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us
from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we
may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Kneel/Sit
P: Most merciful God,
C: We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the
power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion
forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things
we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so
that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ,
your only Son our Lord. Amen.
P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his
sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the
church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the
Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

FEED
God speaks to us in scripture reading,
and feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.
FIRST LESSON………………………………….....Genesis 50:15–21 (pew Bible p. 42)
15
Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, "What if Joseph still
bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to
him?" 16So they approached Joseph, saying, "Your father gave this instruction before
he died, 17'Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the
wrong they did in harming you.' Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18Then his
brothers also wept, fell down before him, and said, "We are here as your
slaves." 19But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of
God? 20Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. 21So have no fear; I myself
will provide for you and your little ones." In this way he reassured them, speaking
kindly to them.
6
PSALM 103—Please sing responsively from the selected verses.
L:
Bless the LORD, | O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless his | holy name.
C:
Bless the LORD, | O my soul,
and forget not | all his benefits.
L:
He forgives | all your sins
and heals all | your infirmities;
C:
he redeems your life | from the grave
and crowns you with mercy and | loving kindness;
L:
The LORD is full of compas- | sion and mercy,
slow to anger and | of great kindness.
C:
As a father cares | for his children,
so does the LORD care for | those who fear him.
SECOND LESSON…………………..…………......Romans 14:1–12(pew Bible p. 923)
Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over
opinions. 2Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. 3Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain
must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. 4Who are
you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they
stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
5
Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be
alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. 6Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they
give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give
thanks to God. 7We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. 8If we
live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or
whether we die, we are the Lord's. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, so
that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 10Why do you pass judgment
on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we
will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For it is written, "As I live, says the
Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God." 12So
then, each of us will be accountable to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
(ELW p. 142a)
HOLY GOSPEL……………………………..…….Matthew 18:21–35 (pew Bible p. 789)
L:
C:
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 18th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord. (spoken)
21
Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if another member of the church sins
against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?" 22Jesus said to
him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times. 23For this reason the
kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with
his slaves. 24When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents
was brought to him; 25and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be
made. 26So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, 'Have patience with me,
and I will pay you everything.' 27And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28But that same slave, as he went out, came
upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by
the throat, he said, 'Pay what you owe.' 29Then his fellow slave fell down and
pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30But he refused; then
he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31When his fellow
slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32Then his lord summoned him and said
8
to him, 'You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with
me. 33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?'
34
And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire
debt. 35So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive
your brother or sister from your heart."

HOLY BAPTISM………………………………….…………………...ELW p. 227
APOSTLES’ CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin
Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.
Amen.

C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing,
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with
the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the
prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a
foretaste of the feast to come.
P: Holy God, gracious and merciful, you bring forth food from the earth and nourish
your whole creation. Turn our hearts toward those who hunger in any way, that
all may know your care; and prepare us now to feast on the bread of life, Jesus
Christ, your only Son our Lord.
C: Amen.

P:
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise .... we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
(ELW p. 144)
C:
P: Everlasting God, the whole universe sings a new song of praise: the rivers clap
their hands, the hills ring out for joy. As you have raised us to new life in Christ,
give us voices ready to cry out for justice and proclaim resurrection joy wherever
your Spirit leads us.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body,
given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for
the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
With this bread and cup we remember our Lord’s Passover from death to life, as we
proclaim the mystery of faith.
C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
P: God of salvation and resurrection, pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these
gifts of bread and wine. Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and grace.
And to you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be praise and honor, now and
forever.
C: Amen.
11
C:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.

thanks; to all who know sin and desire a Savior; and to all
who are convinced that they should put first things first on
the Lord's Day, Grace Lutheran opens its doors and arms
in the Name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and we bid you
WELCOME. If you are a visitor, please sign our Guest

GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH welcomes The Rev.
Glenn Ludwig, Vice President of Seminary Advancement
at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg.
Pastor Ludwig will bring us greetings from the seminary
and will also preach God’s Word during the sermon time
today at all of our morning services. Welcome Pastor
Ludwig!
PENN STATE STUDENTS! We are glad you are here
today, and we pray that you are blessed by our worship. You are welcome throughout your time at PSU. All
the events and programs at Grace are open to you, and
also, Lutheran Student Community offers events and programs especially for students. You’ll find brochures at the
Welcome Center, or you can contact Alicia Anderson,
Campus Minister, or student leaders via the website
www.lutheranpennstate.org or [email protected].
ASSISTIVE LISTENING SYSTEM...Grace Lutheran
Church has an assistive listening system. It is set up with
a transmitter and two types of receivers for FM radio
waves.
—The first type of receiver amplifies sound from the microphone. It is most useful for someone with a mild hearing loss. The ear bud is placed in the better ear or the
ear without a hearing aid. When the receiver is switched
on, the light shows and the volume can be set according
to the individual’s needs.
—The second type is used by an individual with a more
severe hearing loss and whose hearing aid has a telecoil
setting. The hearing aid is set for tcoil; the neck loop is
placed around the neck; the receiver is turned on and the
volume is adjusted. The neck loop creates a signal that is
picked up by the hearing aid tcoil. If you would benefit
from one of these devices, please speak with an usher.
ACROSS THE YEARS...there is a key word that characterizes what we endeavor to impress into the minds of our
people as they cross the threshold of this House of God the word is reverence. When we gather within these hallowed walls, we must always see ourselves in the proper
perspective. We are drawn by the Holy Spirit as the people of God. We've come to worship Him. That is why it is
requested that those present refrain from using personal
electronic devices during worship. It might be best to just
turn them off altogether. Your neighboring worshipers will
be most grateful. Whatever we share together should be
characterized by reverence and dignity as we are inspired, enlightened, and nurtured.
VISITORS AND FRIENDS ALIKE…routinely honor us
with their presence in worship. While we are always
grateful for their participation, a good number typically
express an interest in exploring membership with our congregation. If you’ve been thinking about membership,
please contact Pastor Lynn by calling the Church Office,
238-2478 or by email at [email protected] Or, better
yet, speak with him following worship today. He’ll be glad
to speak with you.
BORN AGAIN OF WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT...In
Baptism we are adopted by God and gifted with both His
promise and His Spirit. Just such a moment comes today
at our 9:00 A.M. service, when Kyla Quinn Heebner, born
November 30, 2013, daughter of John and Leslie Heebner, receives this holy sacrament. We welcome Kyla
Quinn into the Lord’s family, a fellow member with us of
the body of Christ, and a worker with us in the Kingdom
of God.
WORSHIP AT TUSSEY MOUNTAIN AND ANNUAL
CHURCH PICNIC...TODAY. Worship begins at the pavilion at 11 AM. A great picnic lunch follows with many funfilled activities at Tussey in the afternoon for your entire
family. Grace will provide the main course, drinks and
dessert. We ask that all Grace members please bring a
side dish (e.g. salad, fruit, vegetables, casserole) that will
serve 10-12 people.
14
Activities for everyone include: zipline, paddleboats, fishing on the lake (bring your rod and bait), par-3
golf, horseshoes, go-carts, driving range and more for our
youth and adults.
If you could come just a half-hour early or stay a
half-hour later, we will need assistance transporting tables and chairs, setting up and cleaning up. Contact Jason Laine 814-404-4719 or [email protected] if you
are available.
PRAYER LIST...Our prayer list is an important piece of
information given each week. As we pray for our sisters
and brothers, it is important to have up-to-date information. In the past, we have prayed for folks long after they
are well. We have also prayed for people for weeks after
they have passed to heaven. In an effort to keep our list
current, names will be removed three (3) months after
they are given to us unless we are told by the “giver” of
the name that a longer term of prayer is required. Please
notify the church office prior to Thursday, September 25th
of anyone on the list who should not be removed.
Thank you to all who conscientiously inform us of
a person whose name can be removed.
ADULT EDUCATION SURVEY…At all four services today, September 14th and next Sunday, September 21st,
you will find a survey form inserted in the bulletin. The
purpose of the survey is to identify topics to develop into
single session forum gatherings for the coming year. After
completing the survey, please place it in one of the boxes
located immediately outside the sanctuary in the Narthex
labeled "adult education surveys". Your suggestions are
important and will help to provide a focus in the development of possible forum topics for presentation as a single
session Bible class.
CURRENT BUILDING PLEDGE FORMS...Extra pledge
forms for the 2014 building pledge campaign are available at the Welcome Center. Please take both a yellow
and blue form and return your completed blue form to the
church office.
COIN BANKS FOR CROP…Since 2008, The Disciples
Class, a Sunday School class for persons with intellectual
disabilities, has been distributing coin banks to all School
Class members. Over the past 6 years, this fundraising
effort has netted over $2,500 in coins and bills to help
Church World Service overcome hunger. Sunday, September 7th, the class passed out banks to all the Sunday
School classes. Filled banks will be collected the last
Sunday in October. If you would like to join us in saving
our change to make a change, you may pick up a bank in
the commons area. Thank you!
INSTALLATION OF BISHOP MICHAEL
RHYNE...Saturday, October 18th at 2:00 PM, First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine Street, Johnstown, PA. There is
a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center if you are interested in traveling to Johnstown for the installation of the
new Bishop. Deadline to sign-up is September 28th.
The September selection for THE GARDEN OF READIN'
is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. This is the
selection of Linda Domin and she will be facilitating the
discussion on Tuesday, September 16 at 10:30 am and
6:00 pm in Fireside.
GRACE GARDEN EXCHANGE...Bring your extra fruit,
vegetables and flowers to the Grace Garden Exchange to
share with other Grace members. A table is located in
the southwestern corner of the narthex (blood pressure
area). If you don’t have a garden and would like some
fruit, vegetables or flowers, please feel free to pick some
up. We want the table to be filled up on Sunday morning
and empty after the 6 PM service. And yes, we’re still
taking zucchini. Contact Lois Lynn or Steve Foard if you
have any questions.
FOOD BANK NEWS...We contributed 83 lbs. of food
and $317.00 to the State College Food Bank in September. Thank you faithful Grace folks.
BLANKET SUNDAY is October 5. Baskets have been
placed in the narthex for quilts, blankets, kits and
soap. Envelopes for monetary donations will be included
in the Sept. 28th and October 5th Sunday bulletins. Your
gifts reach throughout the world.
Donate 2 hours on Saturday, Sept 20 to help the STOP
HUNGER NOW project by assisting with car parking collection in Grace Parking lot for the football game. The
sign-up sheet is in the upstairs coffee commons.
15
Prayer is a powerful gift and tool God gives to us.
Each Sunday, there will be a “Grace Prayer Request” in Sunday’s
bulletin. Please pray for the request each day of the week during
your daily prayer time. Just think how powerful it would be if all our
members prayed for the same thing each day.
Please pray for God’s guidance and direction as we
meet and then hear and vote on the candidacy of Pastor
Scott Schul to fill our pastoral vacancy.
Weekly Prayer Letter of Encouragement
“Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord
and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees.” ~
Corrie ten Boom
We at Grace strive to be a people of prayer. And we should since prayer is how we
talk with God. Each week in our bulletin we list Grace members or people connected to our
Grace family who are in need of our prayers. A way of making those prayers and our intention to prayer more tangible, we are beginning a prayer letter ministry. Each week, one or
two names will be selected from our prayer list to receive a letter acknowledging our
prayers and signed by Grace members. Each week the letter, with ample room for signatures, will be placed in the gathering area outside the upstairs restrooms-what we are now
calling - “The Commons.” All who are willing to commit to pray for its recipient are invited to
sign the letter. It is our hope that these letters and the prayers promised by the signatures
of our members will serve as powerful encouragement and source of healing and wellness
to those in need of prayer.
This week the Prayer Letter will be sent to Leslie Wagner’s mother, Sarah Harris

brief class descriptions and the names of contact people for each class.
If you've haven't experienced one of these classes talk to one of their members. These
are opportunities to grow in the strength of our faith and to deepen our understanding of the
scripture in communion with other Christians.
State College CROP Hunger Walk and Grace Lutheran Church: What You Can Do To Help
Fact: 1.1 billion people are forced to survive on less than a dollar a day—one of every six people
in the world.
Fact: Over one billion people (one sixth of the world) do not have access to safe water.
The State College Area Food Bank works to provide food to needy people here in our hometown area while Church World Service strives to make global poverty history. We can help both
of these missions by participating in the 2014 State College CROP Walk. Grace Lutheran Church
has been an active participant in the local CROP walk, since its beginning here in Centre County,
and for the past four years our congregation topped the list of monies collected by a single congregation. We hope
to do even better this year!
How can you participate?
• Pick up a walker sheet, solicit donations, and walk with us on Sunday, October 19. For more information contact Leslie or Paul Wagner ministry team leaders at 466-7628, [email protected] or [email protected]
• Fill a CROP coin bank with spare change (banks are available from the Disciples’ Sunday School Class and
from the basket in the Commons outside the sanctuary).
• Make a donation of time, talent, goods, or services to the Silent Auction. Contact Ellen Campbell
([email protected] or 237-0676) or Lynn Rogers ([email protected]). to do so. The auction set-up is on
Saturday, October 4.
• Bid on an item in the Silent Auction, which will be held in the Commons Area next to the narthex from Sunday,
October 5 through the 6 PM service on Sunday, October 12.
• Pray that we may glorify our Lord as we seek to feed the hungry and minister to the poor.
Thank you from the Grace CROP Walk ministry team: Leslie & Paul Wagner, Ruth Kistler, Carla & Nick Rossi,
Kathy & Greg Weimer, Ellen & Jim Campbell, and Missy Garvin.
