Grimsthorpe Castle Park and Gardens
Discover the timeless delights of this Lincolnshire estate
Grimsthorpe is a historic house, park and garden in Lincolnshire, open in the summer for adults and children to enjoy the
countryside, nature and history. For more information on visiting the Castle please visit our website.
The Trust
In 1978 to preserve the Castle, its contents and surrounding
Estate in perpetuity the 27th Baron Willoughby de Eresby and
the third Earl of Ancaster established a charitable trust, the
Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust and transferred
ownership to the Trust. Also transferred to the Trust at the
same time was Drummond Castle and Gardens in Perthshire.
Lady Willoughby de Eresby is currently Chairman of the
Trust with eight co-directors. The administration and day to
day management of the Estates is handled by the Estate
Office at Grimsthorpe.
The Estate is centred on the Castle and extends to 12,500
acres including let farms and farmland, woodland, around
200 residential properties and some commercial properties.
Grimsthorpe Park, predominately to the south west of the
Castle extends to 2,300 acres, and the wider Estate is
predominately within a ring fence and includes the majority of
the properties within the three principal villages within the
boundary; Grimsthorpe, Swinstead and Edenham. The Estate
operates traditionally with a full time workforce of around 30,
supplemented by 30 or more seasonal staff in the summer
when the Castle, Gardens and Park are open to the public.
In 1516 Grimsthorpe was granted by Henry VIII to the 11th
Baron Willoughby de Eresby on the occasion of his marriage
to Maria de Salinas, lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine of
Aragon, and has been in the family ever since. The North
Front, the last work of Sir John Vanburgh, was commissioned
in 1715 by the 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby to celebrate
his elevation to Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven.
