Integrated course success for Kenya Airways cadets
Seven Kenya Airways cadets recently achieved their type rating on the Embraer
Regional Jet 170/190 aircraft at the Flight Safety International Academy in
Amsterdam. They are graduates from the first Integrated Professional Pilot
Course for Kenya Airways cadets at Progress Flight Academy.
The integrated course is a premium course that achieves the superior
operational capability necessary for the very steep learning curve in the
transition from a multi-engine piston aeroplane to a medium jet airliner.
The Integrated Professional Pilot Courses approved by the South African Civil
Aviation Authority (SACAA) comply with best international practice. This is the
European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) specification as defined in the Joint
Aviation Regulations Flight Crew Licencing (JAR-FCL) document.

The great quality advantage of an approved integrated course is the significant
use of student pilot-in-command (SPIC) time for candidates to gain additional
experience in instrument flight operations. SPIC time allows the student to act
as pilot-in-command under the supervision of a flight instructor, and to log the
time as pilot-in-command. At Progress Flight Academy this additional training
is used to gain experience of operations in actual instrument conditions.
The Progress Flight Academy CPL/ IR (ME) integrated course for International
students provided 80 hours instrument training which included 15 hours in a
Piper Seminole multi-engine aeroplane; in contrast, the modular CPL/ IR (ME)
course requirement is 40 hours instrument training and five hours instrument
training in a multi-engine aeroplane. The integrated course includes a total of
42 Piper Seminole hours, including a solo flight.
All seven cadets have completed the operational training and been appointed
as First Officers.

This 100% qualification rate is a conspicuous achievement that demonstrates
the superior quality of the Integrated Professional Pilot Course by Progress
Flight Academy.
Concurrent with this achievement, the first Kenya Airways graduates from a
Progress ‘class of 2006’ are training for command on the Embraer Regional Jet
190. Captain Chrispine Onyango is the first to qualify, and three other First
Officers from the same course are in training.
Capt Chrispine Onyango and FO Iyadi Omurembe in a Kenya Airways ERJ 190
Progress Flight Academy recently graduated two more Kenya Airways cadets,
Victor Maingi and Kelvin Maina. This brings the total number of Progress
graduates for Kenya Airways to 71.
Kenya Airways cadets proceed to the Comair Training Centre for a Jet
Orientation Course which includes Crew Resource Management (CRM) and
