NEXUS / INTEGRATION SERVER A flexible data hub for REHAB Basel
REHAB Basel provides comprehensive rehabilitation with the goal of achieving
the greatest degree of independence of its patients possible. In the extraordinary building designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, REHAB Basel also
operates the only vigil coma ward in Switzerland.
However, the center for paraplegic and brain-damaged persons is not only going
innovative ways in treating its patients; the rehabilitation facility is also betting
on a high technological standard with respect to IT. The modern Swiss rehabilitation facility uses the NEXUS / INTEGRATION SERVER, which ensures secure
data exchange between the individual systems as a flexible data hub.
Approximately 400 inpatients are prepared in REHAB for an independent life to the greatest extent possible with the help of specialist doctors,
nurses and medical experts. These are all patients, whose data and information have to be managed and structured, so that they can be retrieved everywhere in the hospital buildings at all times. More than 10 systems handle the IT-supported workflows in the Basel rehabilitation facility.
The persons responsible decided in favor of the integration server from NEXUS for smooth communication between these systems, practical
monitoring and increased data security.
It links very different applications, which process the generated
data between and in collaboration with each other. It also acts
as a data hub between the hospital information system and the
medical devices as well as other software solutions. Manfred
Erb, IT Head of REHAB Basel, stands enthusiastically between
numerous humming server blocks and at the end of approx. kilometers of cable. The IT heart of REHAB Basel beats in a highly secured basement there, the center for highly specialized
treatment and rehabilitation of paraplegics and brain-damaged
people as well as patients with dual trauma, spinal cord and
craniocerebral injuries.
Not only the setup of the hospital information system from NEXUS in 2007, but also the conversion of all treatment to paperless documentation
was an exciting project for the IT Head of REHAB Basel. „Paper at the wards of REHAB almost disappeared with a couple of weeks in November
2010,“ Manfred Erb remembers. With a clever conversion concept with in-house key users, the complete staff was trained for the new system
with support of NEXUS IT experts. In the meantime, prescriptions, documentation of treatment measures and archiving of all findings and documents are done electronically. „This was a huge project,“ Mr. Erb emphasized, during the introduction of which a 24-hour hotline was even set
up in REHAB; the NEXUS project team was also standing by ready to provide help if needed.
The scheduler is also an indispensable module of NEXUS software. „Contrary to
emergency care hospitals, treatments are often planned months in advance in rehabilitation facilities,“ NEXUS Project Manager Timo Hornig explained. When a patient
checks into REHAB, the integration server supports all systems in distributing the
relevant data. The data are provided „on one basis“ via the server and sent directly
from there to all involved systems: The kitchen software receives information with
respect to possible dietary food, and findings and pending examinations are stored
in the laboratory software. „Our server acts as a data hub,“ according to Manfred
Erb. „Individual systems are tapped into there, the data are checked, forwarded and
distributed at the appropriate places.“ In addition, the integration server of course
converts data. For example, system-specific data formats are converted to standard
HL7.

Increased Security thanks to
plausibility check
The integration server also provides users with an integrated plausibility check of data. „This additional security factor was also a reason for
our decision in favor of the integration server,“ Manfred Erb said. The server can check data before they are made available to the next system. For example, incorrectly allocated laboratory findings are detected and trigger an electronic message. „The plausibility check protects
us against errors and consequently signifies increased safety for patients,“ according to IT Head Manfred Erb at REHAB Basel.

„Our unique selling proposition is the possibility of documenting a hospital‘s own system landscape,“ the NEXUS project manager emphasized. „Numerous systems are networked in a hospital, and customers lose an overview at some point.“ On the other hand,

The complete system landscape can be structured and visualized clearly arranged; that creates a high degree of transparency. Customers can monitor the data flow and see the precise
responsibility of the software supplier in addition to the capacity
utilization of hard disks, the function of individual systems or the
operational state, for example. As a result, customers are equipped with skills for taking actions and can even set up interfaces/
systems themselves thanks to the integration server. In addition,
all interfaces need not be set up anew at new system installation.
The integration server also stores and collects data for required
updates or at a power outage and supplies them again later.
The fact that the data flow and configuration can be exported as
system-independent documentation in the form of HTML files is
especially to be emphasized.
Server for the Special Requirements in the
Healthcare System
NEXUS / INTEGRATION SERVER is consciously not overloaded with innumerable functions. As a result, users can master the system
easily. „Instead of integrating superfluous functions and options, we have concentrated on the actual requirements in the healthcare
system and optimized our product precisely for actual use,“ Mr. Hornig states clearly.
As a result, the integration server also fulfills the HL7 interface status in the healthcare system.
