Nexus is a modern customer focused organisation, which co-ordinates and provides quality public transport services in Tyne and Wear, including the Tyne and Wear Metro. Nexus also procures local bus, rail and ferry services and promotes public transport generally. Nexus Apprentice Programme 2015 Ref: N-AP 2015 Nexus are looking to recruit Ten Mechatronic/Railway Engineering Apprentices to commence training in September 2015. If you are a “nine to five clock watchers” you are not what Nexus is looking for so look elsewhere and don’t apply. Nexus is a 24/7 operation and applicants for our apprenticeships will want to contribute to the running of this essential region service, day and night including weekend shifts, at all times and in all weathers, but that is what our apprentices enjoy. Three years in duration, the programme will equip you with the skills and experience necessary to become a Maintenance Engineering Technician. All Nexus apprentices start training in Mechatronics. Mechatronics is the combination of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, a multidisciplinary field of engineering, that is to say it rejects splitting engineering into separate disciplines. In the later stages of your apprenticeship you training will be more specialised towards Electrical/Mechanical & Plant; Overhead Lines OHL [Electrical/Mechanical]; Signalling & Communications [Electrical/Electronic]. Whichever route, you’ll spend your first year at Gateshead College specialist engineering training centre. At the commencement of your second year again you will attend Block Education at Gateshead College studying for an HNC. The remainder of your second and third year are then spent at Nexus Rail working with experienced maintenance teams. From the very beginning, you’ll learn about our very high safety standards critical part of your everyday life on the Railway and obtain the qualifications and skills to develop a long-term career with Nexus. Whatever discipline, the work is critical and is always conducted with the highest levels of safety in mind, and of course you need to be prepared to work shifts too. To apply, applicants will have already attained or are expected to achieve as minimum Four GCSEs at grade A-C (or equivalent) including the following 3 mandatory subjects, English, Maths and Science or Engineering. Because of the intensity of Maths required for this programme, Nexus will be looking for the higher GCSE’s in this subject area. It is important you understand what is involved in a career with Nexus Rail. Remember, this is job that is regularly required to work outdoors and often requires a good level of physical fitness. Before an offer of employment is made, you will be required to attend a full medical, with our Occupational Health Provider, to ensure you meet the standard for working in a safety critical role. Nexus has a strict policy on drug and alcohol use. Application pack please visit our website: www.nexus.org.uk (CVs not accepted). Closing date: 31st March 2015 Interview date: TBC
