Young people form habits quickly. Please encourage the habit of regular and punctual attendance. Excellent attendance and timekeeping will enable pupils to reach their full potential. The school will reward pupils as an incentive for 100% attendance of the school year. However all pupils are set an attendance target of 94% or above. Top marks The school is required by law to record the attendance of every pupil. The register also records who is absent or late. Missing out Regular attendance and punctuality at school is the legal responsibility of parent/carers. If your child is too ill to come to school, then please let the school know on the first morning either by telephone, note or personally. If no message is received we will be telephoning you to ask why your child is not in school. When your child returns to school, please send a dated note to the form tutor giving reasons for absence. (See student planner). If your Child’s Attendance falls below 92% you will: Receive a telephone call from the school asking you to ensure that his/her attendance improves, If there is no significant improvement the school will write to you to remind you that regular and full attendance is a legal obligation, If your child’s attendance still fails to improve you will be asked to attend an Attendance Panel Meeting at the school, If there is no significant improvement your child’s case will be referred to the Education Welfare Officer who will decide if a prosecution is necessary. Prosecutions may result in a fine or a custodial sentence. End of Term Trips Pupils with below 92% attendance will not be allowed on the end of term Reward trips. Don’t worry, let us help Sometimes young people get worried about going to school. They may say they have a headache or feel sick to ‘cover up’ the genuine problem. They may be worried about certain lessons, have no friends or are perhaps being bullied. Periods of missed time can result in lack of progress and hinder your child’s social and personal development. Please mention your concerns to the Leader of Learning or contact Mrs Evans, the EWO. The sooner the problems are solved, the sooner your child can resume focussed learning. Contacts If your child has an attendance issue you can contact your child’s Leader of Learning, Key Stage Manager, or Mrs S Evans the Education Welfare Officer. All can be contacted at school on 01495 310527 Holidays Brynmawr Foundation School policy is that holidays during term time will not be authorised. At risk Unauthorised absence can put your child at varied risks beyond the control of the school or you as parents or carers. Illness in school If your child is ill in school we will contact you. Pupils should not contact parents via mobile phones; they should report to Reception who will deal with the issue accordingly. However if your child has a medical condition please be reminded that it is parents/carers be reminded that it is parents responsibility to let us know; please do so as soon as possible so we can work together to support your child. ‘Signing out’ during the school day If your child needs to leave school parents should write a note in their student planner. They need to show their form tutor in registration who will make the appropriate arrangements. Examples of situations requiring leaving school could be dental/medical appointment or music examinations. Inclement weather In the event of poor weather, particularly in the Winter months, information will be displayed on the school website or through contacting the school. PARENTS/CARERS CAN HELP TOO! Telephone on the first morning of absence and keep the school updated regularly if the illness continues. Brynmawr Foundation School has ‘Truancy Call’, which is an automated call system. If we do not receive a call explaining your child’s absence you will be called by the Truancy Call system asking for a reason as to why your child is not in school, Ensure that your contact numbers are kept up to date. Encourage your child to aim for 100% attendance each term throughout the year. Arrange to plan holidays during the official school holidays. If problems persist, discuss them with your child’s Leader of Learning, Key Stage Manager or Mrs S Evans (Education Welfare Officer). Monitor the attendance of your child via their school planners as each month a new attendance target will be given to them. Be firm about their attendance – if your child is ill in school, we will contact you. Reassure your child that problems can be sorted out. Talk about school in a positive way and praise or reward your child’s success. Ask to see books, homework and their diary. Check if you have been given any letters from school.
