The Canadian Models are circulated in a separate document. MODIFICATIONS: The January 2014 edition of the Code Supplement is designed to assist with the application of the 2013 Code of Points. Material has been removed from this supplement that duplicates information contained in the 2013 Code of Points. The main purpose of the Code Supplement is to provide clarifications to the Code and adaptations that are valid in Canada as well as information about correct technique. Modifications made to previous versions of the Supplement are identified as follows in the left margin: ADD = Addition CLA = Clarification of existing text MOD = Modification of existing text The following abbreviations are used: PD-AG = Program Director, Artistic Gymnastics TBC = a confirmation will be sought/is expected from the FIG. VICO = valid in Canada only. NEW INTERPRETATIONS / IN CASE OF A DOUBT: a) New interpretations: No new interpretation may be introduced at a national level competition unless written notification has been circulated by GCG before the competition. It is understood that a province may put emphasis on certain aspects of the Code or even modify certain regulations and guidelines. This is their privilege within their area of jurisdiction. However judges must ensure that provincial emphasis/modifications are not automatically transferred to national level competitions. Execution is to be judged according to the FIG Code of Points, and Section II of the Supplement. b) In case of a doubt: In case of a doubt regarding the current interpretation of a rule, the benefit of the doubt will be given to the gymnast until clarification has been received from GCG. The concept of “benefit of the doubt” is to be applied only in cases where the rule is unclear according to the judges, not when there is a different interpretation of the rule between the coach and the panel or jury. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Page 3 Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 4 PART 1: FIG CODE OF POINTS SECTION 2 REGULATIONS FOR GYMNASTS 2.1. Rights of the Gymnast APPARATUS Safety Directives WAG has several developmental programs, which authorize modifications to the FIG specifications for equipment. Refer to the current edition of the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Equipment Specifications and Measurements Procedure for detailed information on safety directives. The directives apply for all WAG national level competitions and GCG sanctioned domestic inter-provincial or international club competitions. The deductions regarding extra mats are below. For National Level competitions, additional safety measures may be taken by the Superior Jury on an ad-hoc basis to ensure that the safety of the athletes is not compromised. Deduction in Case of Use of Unpermitted Additional Matting on UB - by D1 Judge a) If the safety mat is slid in, the 0.50 deduction will be applied if the 20 cm safety mat is left in place, immobile too long - maximum 2 moves preceding and following each acceptable element. VICO b) There is a 0.50 deduction if the 20 cm safety mat is under the rail and no D, E, F or G release element is performed. (Except for Novice and Open) VICO Balance Beam: Supplementary mat: Supplementary mats are only available on one end of the beam only. All gymnasts are expected to dismount on the same end of the beam. Mount and dismount: ADD: Exception: 400 cm at one end of the beam (dismount end) 500 cm at the other end (mount run up area) Gymnasts may place the supplementary mat at the side of the beam for dismounts to the side. (coach should inform the D1 that the supplementary mat will be moved) Equipment Set-up and Verification a) It is the responsibility of the Organizing Committee to set-up the equipment according to the directives and specification. The PD-AG and Canadian Head Judge or their representatives will ensure that the equipment is correctly set up. The Canadian Head Judge or Assistants will check it at the beginning of each training day. The Competition Head Judge will ensure that the directives and specifications are in effect at the beginning of the warm-up of the session. b) The verification of apparatus will include the lines on the regular and supplementary mats for Vault. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Inter continental Course/ International Course 2013 WC ’13 Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 ADD c) The D1 is responsible for ensuring the correct equipment specifications are verified prior to the warm-up for each competition session. Withdrawal from Competition (Scratches) a) If a gymnast will be withdrawing from the competition and the decision to do so is made prior to or during competition warm-up, the coach of the gymnast must inform the PD-AG, who will inform the Chief Scorer and the Canadian Head Judge. b) c) VICO During competition, gymnasts may warm up on the event apparatus as permitted by the rules as outlined in the Code of Points or in the Code Supplement. Gymnasts may not warm up on other event apparatus. i.e. when warming up for beam, using the floor exercise mat unless authorized, for a given session, by the Canadian Head Judge (or designate) or the PD-AG. Elite Canada and Canadian Championships: Warm up for all Categories – see Women’s Program Manual Section 5.2.5 Preparation of Equipment a) During the competition, the apparatus may be prepared ahead of time but the gymnast may not warm up on the apparatus before the official time begins. b) A coach whose athlete was on Vault may prepare the rails when the competition on UB is finished, upon permission of the D1. c) Following the warm-up period or during the “competition pause” the apparatus may be prepared (max. 2 persons on UB) but not used. 2.1 VICO If a gymnast will be withdrawing from the competition after the competition has begun, the coach must inform either the Canadian Head Judge or the Competition Head Judge who will then inform the Chief Scorer and the D1 of each event. Warm-Up a) Unauthorized warm-up will be considered as unsportsmanlike behaviour with direct impact on the result/performance of the gymnast/team. The Canadian Head Judge will warn the offending coach first then if necessary shall give a Yellow Card and the corresponding deduction of 0.50 will be taken from the gymnast’s final score on that event. b) Page 5 Responsibilities of the Gymnast Competition Attire a) Incorrect attire is taken only one time per Competition Phase. Non-transparent is defined as follows: the skin cannot be seen beneath the fabric. For competition, ‘cutouts’ are not permitted on the body of the leotard. The body of the leotard is defined as per the FIG Code. (In front, from the line marked by half of the sternum and below. In back, from the line marked by the shoulder blades and lower.) Sleeveless leotards are permitted, therefore, transparent material and/or ‘cut-outs are accepted on the sleeve area. 2013 Code of Points JDWG Oct. 2003 b) Competitions I (Qualification) and IV (Team Finals): It is not relevant how many gymnasts do not wear identical leotards. The deduction is 1.00 from the Team score. P/T with individual gymnasts do not have to wear identical leotards. c) The Canadian Head Judge takes the deduction of 1.00 for different competition attire from the team score total, for the team competition if the P/T has a team. This rule applies to the Canadian Championships and the Canada Games. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 6 d) Advertising must meet the FIG Publicity Rules. The Superior Jury (Canadian Head Judge in Canada) will be notified if it is not appropriate. It is then the responsibility of the Chair of the Superior Jury (Canadian Head Judge in Canada) to take the deduction from the gymnast/event/score. 2.1.2 e) In case of a lost or forgotten number, the athlete must obtain a replacement number from the Organizing Committee for the price determined by the Host Organization. VICO f) VICO Gymnasts are not permitted to wear headbands. The Canadian Head Judge will first warn the gymnast then if necessary shall apply the deduction for incorrect attire. g) Body bandages must be beige or skin coloured when available from the Manufacturer. Padding can be considered as a protector such as sponge on hips and ankles and is not allowed. ‘Chinese ankle guards’ are acceptable if not too large. The Canadian Head Judge will first warn the gymnast then if necessary shall apply the deduction of 0.30 for incorrect attire. FIG NATIONAL COURSE As per the Code of Points Regulations for Gymnasts (Section 2 Page 1): “Warm-up – Following the warm-up period or during the ‘competition pause’, the apparatus may be prepared but not used.” This includes the matting at an event. i.e. saltos on the beam mat while waiting for the green light or signal to begin, are not permitted. As per the Code of Points Regulations for Gymnasts (Section 2.3.1 Page 2): “She must leave the podium immediately after the conclusion of her exercise”. In Canada this is interpreted as also meaning that gymnasts may not perform a skill(s) as they are leaving the apparatus area. i.e. on beam during the routine gymnast fell on back salto – on leaving the apparatus the coach has gymnast perform element again on the landing mat. JDWG July 2008 VICO SECTION 3 REGULATIONS FOR COACHES 3.1 Rights and Responsibilities of Coaches Number of Coaches on the Floor in Canada Refer to Section 4 of the WPM (article 4.5) for the number and function of people who have access to the training, warm-up and competition floors. Standing in a Position to Spot a) Coaches are not allowed to block the view of the judges - however there is no deduction for this offence. Judges should request that the coach moves. b) Podium: In Canada the mats surrounding the apparatus will be considered as the "podium ". Unauthorized remaining of the coach on the podium is a deduction of 0.50 from the gymnast's final score on that event. c) If a coach touches or catches a gymnast while she is falling from the bars there is no coach’s penalty for spotting. The gymnast is deducted only 1.00 for the fall. d) If a coach touches the gymnast without assisting, e.g. gymnast swings into coach, there is no deduction. e) If a coach is on the mat at BB and spots an element the deduction is 0.50 for being on the mat and 1.0 for spotting assistance for a total deduction of 1.50. The gymnast will not receive DV, CV or CR for the skill that has been spotted. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO JDWG November 2010 FIG WTC Dec. 2005 2013 International Course VICO Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 3.2 Page 7 Signals, verbal commands or similar to a competing gymnast As per the 2013 FIG Code, “The coach is not permitted to: speak directly to the gymnast, give signals, shouts (cheers) or similar during the exercise”. Coaches are cautioned that any signals, verbal commands, and/or verbal encouragement are not acceptable behaviours. These types of behaviour include but are not limited to: forceful clapping throughout a routine; loud claps timed to prompt a dismount or other action; yelling “stick”; and shouting commands such as ‘come on, ‘keep going’. VICO Penalties for 3.2 and 2.1.2 The following penalties will be applied at the discretion of the Canadian Head Judge (or designate) in consultation with the D1 on the apparatus where the incident occurred. The penalties will be applied and the stage of penalty carried forward over the entire competition e.g., CC or EC. 1. Written warning to coach by Canadian Head Judge or designate, after consultation with the respective D1, for the first offence and occurrence noted in the competition report. 2. A $20 fine for a second similar offence. The fine is payable immediately to the Canadian Head Judge who will also note this occurrence in the competition report. 3. A subsequent repeated offence in the competition shall result in a second additional fine of $40. The fine is payable immediately to the Canadian Head Judge who will also note this occurrence in the competition report. 4. After this, should there be a repeated violation, the Canadian Head Judge in consultation with the PD-AG (WAG) may apply the card system as described on page 17 of the Code.(Immediate Red Card and removal of coach from competition) VICO March 2007 Improper or Unsportsmanlike Behaviour a) A behaviour which is considered unacceptable according to the FIG Code of Points, the GCG Code of Ethics, the WP Code of Ethics or the rules generally accepted in Canadian society will be sanctioned by: - the Canadian Head Judge; and/or - the Superior Jury; and/or - the WPC. They will also determine if the offence is minor or serious. CLAR VICO b) Improper or unsportsmanlike behaviour, including standing behind judge(s) while an athlete is being evaluated by judges, unfounded or derogatory comments about the judges or the judging, showing disrespect for judges, other coaches or other athletes, etc. are subject to a sanction. VICO c) A minor offence may be sanctioned by: - verbal or written warning; - written reprimand. VICO d) The sanctions in case of a serious offence are: - first offence during the entire competition (e.g. Elite Canada): yellow card and 0.50 deduction from gymnast’s final score. - second offence during the same competition (e.g. Elite Canada): $200.00 fine; - third offence during the same competition (e.g. Elite Canada): $300.00 fine, red card and 1.00 deduction from gymnast’s final score, and possible withdrawal of accreditation. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 - A very serious infraction to the Code of Ethics may be sanctioned by immediate removal of access to training, warm-up and competition floor. e) Additional sanctions may be imposed by GCG in accordance with GCG Policy and Procedures. f) Page 8 VICO If a coach is given a Yellow Card for one offence and then commits another offence he/she will then be given a Red Card. It is not necessary to have repeated the same offence. g) If a coach has deliberately caused a disruption, he/she may be Red Carded immediately and a 1.00 deduction taken from the gymnast’s final score. Coach’s Attire VICO a) The following attire is required for each coach on the competition floor during warm-up and competition: appropriate training suit, excluding hats, shorts, midriff tops, ripped or torn clothing or similar; top: T-shirt, polo shirt or training jacket; appropriate indoor sport footwear. b) In case of inappropriate clothing, the Canadian Head Judge will issue a verbal warning; if the situation is not corrected in the following 30 minutes, a $40.00 penalty will be levied for each competition phase. 3.4 Inquiries During the Competition in Canada Refer to Section 4 of the WPM for directives on inquiries and protests. Protests a) Coaches have the opportunity to make an inquiry or submit a protest regarding their gymnast’s D and E Scores, as well as the time and line deductions. This inquiry or protest gives the opportunity to the judges to review their work to be sure that the D Score and Final Score are correct. If warranted, a change will be made. b) It is the responsibility of the D1 and D2 judges to ensure that the D Score and the E Score are correct for every gymnast. The D Score and E Score will be reviewed before they are flashed in order to decrease the number of inquiries and protests. Due to this additional monitoring, the D and E Scores are less likely to change should an inquiry or protest occur. c) If a protest is received for an E Score, a change will occur only if it will make a significant difference. d) Protests submitted for the last event that can be construed as submitted only to benefit a gymnast’s AA score must be reviewed prudently. Following a protest when a change is made to the D Score and/or E Score the following will occur: a) The Canadian Head Judge or Competition Head Judge will return the protest form and the protest fee to the coach. The Canadian Head Judge or the Competition Head Judge will explain the rationale for the change to the coach. b) The Canadian Head Judge or Competition Head Judge will inform the Chief Scorer of the change. c) The score will be posted (on a distinctive color paper), in one of the waiting areas at the designated location. It is the responsibility of coaches to check the designated location for any changes to scores. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO VICO JDWG Sept. 2005 VICO JDWG Sept. 2005 Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Notification of a calculation/secretarial error Page 9 VICO Notification of an error in calculation by the secretary or results personnel must be brought to the attention of the PD-AG within 15 minutes of the first draft of the results being circulated to the coaches. After the 15 minute deadline no changes will be made to the results. Video Review a) The judges may review the video when addressing an inquiry or protest. Only the skill(s) in question will be observed to a maximum of three times and only at regular speed. The review of the video will take place in a secluded area. Coaches will not be included in this review. SECTION 5 – REGULATIONS AND STRUCTURE OF APPARATUS JURIES 5.1 Regulations for Judges Add the following to the paragraph on “Knowledge”: - WAG Supplement to the FIG Code - WAG Canadian Models - WAG Equipment Document - Women’s Program Manual (WPM) - FIG Judges Help Desk VICO Concerning FIG Judges’ Rules: The judges must be familiar with the current FIG Judges’ Rules. Judge’s Attire: Judges ‘on duty’ are not permitted to wear provincial attire (e.g. jacket) on the floor during training, warm-up or competition. 5.3 JDWG Sept. 2002 VICO The Apparatus Jury (Judges’ Panels) In Canada, except for Vault or otherwise indicated, the Apparatus Jury is composed as follows for National level competition: D Panel determines the D Score D1 / E1 Apparatus Chair D2 / E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 X X _________ E Panel gives deductions X X X X X X _________ The E Score is the average of the two middle E Scores[10 – E deductions] when there are four E judges; average of four middle E Scores when there are six E judges. Neutral penalties are subtracted from the AVERAGE SCORE to obtain the FINAL SCORE Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 5.4.1 5.4.2 5.5.2 Functions of the D Panel Page 10 VICO a) The D1 and D2 judges determine the D Score jointly, which will include the Canadian Model. Discussion is allowed including consultation with the E panel judges on the D Score. The D1 and D2 judges must come to an agreement on the D Score. If there is no agreement, the D panel judges will discuss the D Score with the E panel judges. The D Score agreed to by the majority of the D and E panel judges will prevail. b) The D2 judge flashes the D Score after the E deductions have been submitted by the E panel judges. VICO c) The D1 judge calculates the average E deduction, Final Score and applies neutral deductions (e.g. time and line). She monitors the work of the secretary/scorer and the flasher. She informs the flasher and ensures the E Score is flashed before the next gymnast receives the signal to start her vault/exercise for ALL National level categories. She makes the necessary changes on the score sheet following the adjustment of D or E Score. She informs the Canadian Head Judge of the change. VICO d) The D1 and D2 must duly record a control score of all exercises for the purpose of evaluation of the E Score and to control the total evaluation and final score for each exercise. This is to assure that the gymnast is given the correct score for her performance. VICO e) The D2 judge: posts the D Score ensures that the D Score is seen by the judges on the panel, the coaches, television and the public. The D Score is posted until the D1 judge is ready to give the signal to the next gymnast. monitors the work of the timer(s) f) The decision to adjust the D Score must be taken by both D judges. A decision to adjust the Final Score due to a modification to the E Score must be taken by all the judges on the E panel. Problems and special cases are referred to the Competition Head Judge or to the Canadian Head Judge. g) No judge is obligated to change her score but reaching an agreement amongst panel members is highly desirable. h) The D1 judge is responsible to ensure that the equipment meets the specifications on her apparatus. JDWG Feb. 2004 Functions of the E Panel The E judges may indicate on their slip: - a questionable difficulty value or connection - spotting assistance by coach VICO Once the deductions are submitted, E judges may wish to determine the D Score. Occasionally, they may alert the D judges if they believe that the D Score should be different. However, this must not lead to a discussion of the D Score by the judges on a regular basis. VICO Functions of the Secretaries The Secretary/scorer records all D Scores, E deductions, average deductions, E Score, neutral deductions and Final Score on the score sheet. She checks the calculation of the average score and the final score as part of the verification process. She informs the D1 judge in case of discrepancy. The use of electronic scoring may modify this process. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 11 It is recommended that the Secretaries be Provincial level judges or "qualified" volunteers; qualified means experience at Provincial level competitions. VICO Process for Flashing Vault Scores when electronic scoring is used: VICO a) st 1 Vault: D Score is flashed manually E Score is flashed manually Final score is sent for electronic flashing b) If a gymnast performs a second vault the same process is repeated with the flashing of the D and E Scores manually. Then depending on the rules for the category either the best score of the 2 vaults is sent for electronic flashing or the average score is sent for electronic flashing. (See Canadian Models for specific rules.) Process for Flashing Vault Score when electronic scoring is not used: st a) 1 Vault: D Score is flashed manually E Score is flashed manually Final score is flashed manually b) If a gymnast performs a second vault the same process is repeated with the flashing of the D and E Scores manually. c) In finals it is not necessary to flash the average score. VICO Meeting After Each Competition Session VICO Judges will reconvene in the judges’ meeting room in order to: address any remaining protest(s); address concerns/issues when there are two (or more) sub-divisions in a competition; participate in the post-session evaluation meeting, when appropriate. SECTION 7 – REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE D SCORE Extra step “Without an extra step” means the free leg of the first element after landing is placed immediately as the stand or take off leg for the following element. The definition applies to dance, acro and mixed series and connections. one foot landing - one foot take-off This is a direct connection. e.g. on beam cat leap ½ turn with push-off from L leg and land on R leg followed immediately by a cat leap 1/1 turn with push-off from L leg A B one foot landing - two foot take-off There is a direct connection if the free foot of the first element is placed immediately next to the landing foot, to execute a two foot take off of the second element. An assemblé (take off from one foot and land on two feet) will break a series. e.g. on beam Split leap with leg change followed by a tuck jump with ½ turn. C A Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 12 two foot landing - two foot take-off If the first element finishes with a two foot landing, the second element must start with a two foot take off. e.g. on beam Split jump followed immediately by a straddle pike jump. װ A A two foot landing - one foot take-off These are not direct connections. e.g. on beam Jump full turn land on two feet, followed immediately by a cat leap ½ turn with pushoff from L leg B A e.g. on floor Salto forward landing on two feet followed immediately by a rebound and a roundoff is NOT a direct connection of two elements. | C A B SECTION 8 – REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE E SCORE Fall during the intermediate time If a gymnast falls while remounting the Beam or the Bars (after a fall), there will be a 1.0 deduction even if the timing of the exercise has not resumed. 2012 FIG INTERCONTINENTAL COURSE Q&A Attempt without performing an element - 0.30 This is applied when it is obvious to the judge that the gymnast changed her mind and doesn’t perform an element. - E.g. On beam gymnast starts a run for an acro element, changes her mind and just runs down the beam. The gymnast did not fall but clearly shows an empty pass. The judges must clearly see the intention of the gymnast and apply the deduction only when it is a definite error. - If the gymnast is able to cover up with choreography and the judge is not able to specifically recognize an empty pass the deduction will not be applied. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique 2012 FIG INTERCONTINENTAL COURSE Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 13 Landing faults: Body posture on landing The new point of reference is the head for body position upon landing: - Head at hip level – 0.10 - Head at knee level – 0.30 The point of reference upon landing in a squat is the hips: - Hips slightly above knees – 0.10 - Hips below the level of knees – 0.30 - Deep squat – 0.50 2012 FIG INTERCONTINENTAL COURSE A Lunge is considered as a step. Deduction 0.10/0.30, only for acro elements on floor. Landing should be with legs together and in control. 2012 FIG INTERCONTINENTAL COURSE - When there is a step on dance element (turns) or a dance movement (not necessarily an element of value), the deduction will be - 0.10/0.30 for lack of balance. There is no deduction for precision, therefore an over turn may not be deducted. Very large step or jump (more than shoulder width): 0.30 - The guideline for shoulder width is to consider the space between the heel of the front foot and the toes of the back foot. Judges Help Desk Landing Deductions: On a landing with several steps and then a fall, deduct only for the larger deduction. i.e. fall 1.00. Deep squat and Fall = maximum deduction 1.00 (deductions for height must also be taken if it applies). Deep squat and Steps = maximum deduction 0.80 (deductions for height, must also be taken if it applies). FIG Newsletter # 24 June 2006 SECTION 10 – VAULT 10.1 ADD a) If the safety collar is placed in the wrong position for round-off entry vaults, or if the safety collar is “reversed” or is not close to the springboard, the vault is “0”. (A warning to the Coach is permitted). The safety collar may be used for other vaults without penalty. ADD b) The hand placement mat for round-off entry vaults may not be used for other vaults. Improper use will result in a penalty of 0.50 10.2 Running Approach a) Permitted running approaches: definition of an approach: more than one step. An empty run is deducted - 1.00 taken from the final score of the performed vault. 10.3 The gymnast is in the list of qualifiers for C-III. Example: 1st attempt – No Vault (without touching, etc.) 2nd attempt – No Vault (without touching, etc.) 3rd attempt – Vault performed rd The gymnast should not be allowed to perform a 3 attempt as she must first perform a vault for C-I and then for C-III. In this case, the gymnast performs the maximum of 2 attempts without receiving any score. For Team/All-Around Total thE Score is thus ‘0’. E.g. A gymnast calls Vault # 4.30 (Yurchenko Layout), but performs Vault # 4.20 (Yurchenko Pike), the D Score for the Yurchenko Pike will be used. Corridor Deductions Land or step outside with one foot/hand (part of foot/hand) – 0.10 (even if more than one step on that foot e.g. hopping) Land or step outside with two feet/hands (part of feet/hands) or body part – 0.30 There is no deduction for stepping on the line – similar to floor. 2012 FIG INTERCONTINENTAL COURSE SECTION 11 - UNEVEN BARS General a) The D2 judge will ensure that the Uneven Bars timer announces the elapsing time with audible verbal warning signals by stating 10 seconds, 20 seconds and 30 seconds at the respective times. The timer shall count loudly the last 10 seconds of permitted time for UB (i.e. 21, 22, 23…30 seconds). VICO JDWG July 2004 b) At the count of 30, a final verbal warning signal of “Time” will be announced clearly and loudly by the timer. The D1 will also announce that the exercise is ended. 11.3 COMPOSITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - CR CR 2 – Flight element on same bar ADD Element 1.103 (straddle cut) does not fulfill this CR because it is not flight over the same bar. The ‘vault’ type elements 3.309 (C) and 2.202 (B) do fulfill the CR - 2 BUT only if the gymnast releases the bar with both hands. If the gymnast only releases 1 hand - no flight is credited and the CR - 2 will not be credited for this element as performed AND the element will receive 1 DV lower (D panel). The E panel will not apply deductions for insufficient height. Elements 5.108, 5.105, 5.506 The sole circle with straight or bent legs will receive an A value. If the legs bend at any time during the circle there will be deductions for bent legs. There will also be a deduction 0.50 (a bar change without performing an element) when followed by jump to HB and possibly deductions for the preceding cast. Straddle Sole circle and Pike Sole circle are the same elements. CR 4 - Non-flight element with 360º turn (No MT) The mount or dismount may not be used to meet the Compositional requirement of a non-flight element with 360° turn. e.g. 1.509 (round-off flic-flac with 1/1). Resuming the exercise after a fall: A pump swing or two has always been allowed to initiate momentum to resume the exercise. WTC Newsletter Aug. 2001 FIG Newsletter #23 p10 After a fall the judging resumes as soon as the gymnast performs the first element. No deductions are taken for the way the gymnast returns to the bar. If fall off UB apparatus C when do we take ‘bar change without performing an element’ deduction? Answer: After a fall, we start to judge the routine from the first element performed. The stand on the LB is not an element so when the gymnast jumps from LB to HB we start judging at the circle or kip…so in this example there is no deduction for a bar change without performing an element. But, if the gymnast restarts the routine on the LB with glide kip then jumps on the LB to stand and re-grasp the HB, then the 0.50 deduction would apply because we start judging from the first element performed which in this example is the glide kip. The deduction for Intermediate swings (more than one) in the same place is taken only once. A glide ½ turn glide on LB does not receive a deduction for empty swing. It is not a stretched hanging swing but a variation of a glide element, and is considered a different element from the glide kip. If performed on the HB, it is then considered an empty swing (if below horizontal), as it is a hanging swing. At the count of 10, a final verbal warning signal of “Time” will be announced clearly and loudly by the timer. The D1 will also announce that the exercise is ended. Lack of signal for overtime On Beam, the deduction for overtime is waived if the timer did not give the warning signal at 1 min. 20 or did not signal the end of the exercise at 1 min. 30. All other relevant deductions apply. Principles for Direct Connection: - Gymnast must land with arms slightly forward or back and immediately move into next element. Arms must be already placed for the second element to avoid additional arm swings. - Arm swings will break the connection – even if gymnast has continuous movement of arms. The timing of the connection is emphasized. If an element is performed with straddled legs and this is an acceptable technique, there is no deduction even if it makes the element easier to perform; Amplitude of flight phase for dismounts height and distance for salto dismounts; Landing opening of body before landing salto dismounts quick straightening or stretching of upper body upon landing of salto dismounts sureness, precision SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS Vertical If the body is ± 10° from the vertical, the element is considered in handstand. The angle of the body is measured by drawing a straight line between the hands and the feet. The angle between the vertical and the body is measured when the body has completed the turn or the hop with grip change. Turn in handstand There is no deduction if there is a slight arch during the turn in handstand. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS Cast to handstand with legs together and hips extended 2.201 If a gymnast casts near handstand but does not reach the vertical, returns to front support on same bar, casts again to handstand, the deduction is: -appropriate deductions for insufficient amplitude of casts as per the Code -0.50 for an intermediate swing; Clear hip to circle handstand 2.305 It must be executed with stretched arms (all the time) and with straight body in the upward phase. In that case, a moderate pike position is permissible during the upswing and while passing through the vertical to maintain the acceleration. Giant circle backward to handstand with 1/1 turn 3.301 A giant circle backward whose first half turn is initiated early on the way up and whose second half turn is completed in handstand will receive a C value and no execution deduction. The C value will be given even if there is a hop while performing the first 1/2 turn. There could be a rhythm deduction (0.10 ) if the turn is not continuous. Giant with ½ turn, then second ½ turn in different direction = B ADD 3.401 Giant circle backward through handstand with 1½ turn The element will receive an D value if: the 1 1/2 turn is continuous; there is a 1/2 turn in handstand followed by a 1/1 turn in handstand, however a 0.10 rhythm deduction will be applied; Handstand Pirouettes with ½ + 1/1 turns (180° + 360°) in handstand in different directions (back/forth) have the same value as a 1½ turn (540°) in handstand in the same direction. The element will be deducted if: the full turn is completed after handstand (as per FIG Code) the turn is off direction poor control is shown during the turning phase(s) the legs are straddled too early in the downswing to the next element. This technique has a beat or tap at the bottom of the swing. The definition of curvilinear extension and flexion is in appendix. ii) 3.206 There is a 0.10 deduction if the three actions are not performed with the required quality. The deduction is in addition to the deductions for body posture faults (poor head position, bent arms, bent legs, leg separation when inappropriate) as well as technical fault (insufficient stretch) and rhythm fault. VICO Giant circle forward in reverse grip to handstand with ½ turn or 1/1 turn in handstand The value will be credited if the following are performed: straddled legs and/or bent hip technique in the upswing phase hop during the turn full turn after the vertical on the way down (Healy). Deduction for late turn is taken. 3.306 Giant circle forward in L grip to handstand 3.310 The L grip must be assumed with both hands at the beginning of the circle forward (or immediately upon completion of the ½, 1/1 or 1½ turn in the preceding element). The L grip must be maintained until the body reaches at least 10 from vertical upon completion of the circle. Releasing one grip on the upswing or releasing both grips to hop in another grip in handstand changes the nature of the element that will receive a B value only. Option A: swing technique - for all categories The element must be performed with legs together and body stretched, or body stretched then piked, as follows: First 120° - curvilinear extension; Second 120° - curvilinear flexion; Third 120° - curvilinear extension ADD Deduct 0.10 if 3 phases not shown Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique VICO VICO Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 a) curvilinear extension if the body is meant to be stretched; in handstand, hollow chest with head between the arms, shoulders opened, hips extended and legs together; b) if the body is meant to be stretched then piked: curvilinear extension up to 90 from the vertical bent hips (135 or more) from 90 to handstand in handstand, hips bent for a brief moment with hollow chest and head between the arms, then dynamic opening of the hips to a stretched body position, shoulders opened, legs together Page 26 This technique has a beat or tap at the bottom of the swing. During the three phases (3 x 120), the Code deduction of “insufficient exactness of pike or stretch position” applies. This deduction is used if, in the last 120, the technique performed is neither a clear “stretched” or clear “stretched-piked” technique. The deductions for body posture faults (poor head position, bent arms, bent legs, leg separation), or rhythm fault apply to all phases of the circle. Option B: press technique - for all categories The element must be performed as follows: First 120° - stretched body or curvilinear extension; Second 120° - curvilinear flexion; Last 120° - press technique (bent hips) with legs together or straddled to handstand In handstand, straight body or curvilinear extension with shoulders opened, hips extended and legs together. ADD VICO Deduct 0.1 if 3 phases not shown VICO The Code deduction for “insufficient exactness of pike or stretch position” applies to all phases of the circle. The deductions for body posture faults (poor head position, bent arms, bent legs, leg separation) and rhythm fault apply to all phases as well. 3.310 Giant circle forward in L grip with ½ turn in handstand phase The C value will be credited if the ½ turn is performed with a hop and change of grip. However, the hop must be initiated from the L grip. If a gymnast does a giant circle swing forward with legs together and body stretched in L grip, hops to reverse or regular grip more than 10° before the vertical and then does a ½ turn in handstand to regular grip, the element will receive a B. 6.302 Dismount: Underswing with salto forward At the end of the swing forward, the body should be arched with the shoulder angle open; then the salto forward is initiated. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 27 BEAM (BB) AND FLOOR (FX) GENERAL CRITERIA FOR GOOD TECHNICAL EXECUTION All jumps, leaps and hop must have appropriate technique before they are credited a value Turns on one leg, leaps, jumps, hops, with turns – the E Panel does not take a deduction for incomplete turns. The D Panel credits the turn completed, the E Panel may deduct for precision, body posture faults, leg position, amplitude, etc. Leaps, Jumps and Hops i) General guidelines: - body should be straight, close to vertical; slight inclination (10°) is acceptable - chest should not drop down - square hips and square shoulders - no sliding of the foot/feet to initiate or complete the rotation - feet position: from points straight ahead to a 90° turn out - Tuck Jump 1/1: the ideal body position is less than 90°. This position does not need to be maintained during the entire element but must be shown at one point in the element. BB: 2.201 2.103 FX: 1.101 1.107 a) Straddle Pike Leap or Jump: Hips should be piked and legs at horizontal. If the legs are below horizontal deductions are taken for insufficient amplitude (0.10/0.30). Deductions are also taken for incorrect legs position if the legs are not parallel to the floor and for body posture faults. BB 2.306 b) Split leap with leg change and ¼ turn to side split position (Johnson) The appropriate technique is: - the forward leg must reach at least 45º before the switch: a switch action must be visible with the shoulders facing forward until the switch leg has passed the vertical the switch action is continued with the body turning sideways and is completed with the legs reaching the side split (180º) position FX 1.205 There is a deduction if the legs are not parallel to the floor in the side split position or if the chest is significantly leaning forward upon landing. BB 2.306 FX 1.205 c) Johnson leap with ¼ turn - is not a Split leap with 180° turn. It will be recognized as a Johnson leap. The additional ¼ turn does not change the DV of the element. BB 2.401 FX 1.301 d) Split leap 1/1 turn - slightly incomplete becomes a Tour jeté leap with landing on two feet. It does not become a split leap ½ turn because the technique for the ½ turn is different. e) Split leap 1/1 turn - when more than 45° of split are missing becomes a straight jump with 1/1 turn. f) A Split leap 1/1 turn - when it is slightly incomplete and more than 45° of split are missing becomes a straight jump with ½ turn (not an element in the Code) therefore no DV. g) The wolf jump/hop and wolf jump with leg change are different elements. For turns on 1 leg requiring the free leg to be at specific position, 1/8 of the turn may be used for the gymnast to get the free leg in the correct position. Page 28 International Course 2013 Deductions may be taken for insufficient split position. If the free leg drops too early in the turns 2.403 (FX) and 3.304 (BB), award element #3.101 on BB AND #2.201 on FX. Condition: the held leg must be in correct position by the time 1/8 of turn is completed, otherwise it will be recognized as element # 3.101 on BB and 2.201 on FX. MOD Landing from saltos with twists: The principle of devaluation should not be applied for double saltos with turns. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS – BEAM Round-off flic-flac or round-off salto mounts; all elements on the beam The value is given for the element if at least one foot touches the top of the beam. For details regarding falls see Section 8.3 – FIG Code of Points. Jump to handstand mount There will be no value credited if the body did not reach the handstand (hips above the hands) position. Walkover and handspring A fast walkover (hands and foot on beam at the same time) has an A value; the element must be performed with flight phase before or after hand support to receive a B value. 5.202 Round-off The round-off must have flight phase after hand support and show a quick rise of the upper body to receive B value. 5.208 Flic-flac to cross straddle sit The athlete may go down to cross straddle sit by either: a) bringing the shoulders forward b) bending the arms immediately upon contact (beginning of support). 5.304 - Flic-flac with 1/4 turn to side handstand This is a flic-flac entry to a hold. Consequently the flight phase must be obvious otherwise the deduction is 0.10/0.30 for insufficient height of elements. Can gymnast use chalk on their hands and feet on Floor and on the Vault runway? 2. How many stud earrings can a gymnast wear? 3. What is the definition of ‘padding’? [e.g. are Chinese ankle guards considered padding? 4. What if bandages are not available in skin colour? 5. Bandage colour: is a knee brace that is only available in black okay or does it need to be wrapped in beige tape? 6. Is there a deduction for body tattoos? 7. If the SJ makes a score adjustment, must they formally inform the concerned Federation? [coach of athlete whosE Score is modified?] 8. Warm-up on vault is 30 sec. per gymnast X number of gymnasts in the group. Who times this? [Article 5.3 does not list a timer for vault] 9. Deduction for too close to the apparatus – before moving out of landing deductions section – said “all elements including dismounts” – doesn’t apply to flight element on bars caught very close to bar? 10. Turns: Support leg bent or straight doesn’t change the value; is there a deduction .1/.3 for bent leg? 11. In leaps, if legs are not parallel to floor, there are deductions for the E panel .1/.3 [e.g straddle jump, Johnson] When does the D panel credit or not credit the element? 12. For turns, when it indicates free leg optional, but there is a deduction for body alignment [for leg/foot position] what are the requirements for leg position? E.g what is proper passé etc. position? 13. Absent from the Competition Hall without permission – as long as there is no delay of the competition due to their absence – there is no penalty? [e.g leave for washroom] 14. For pike jump, is the only criteria for technical requirement the hip angle; or should the legs also be at minimum horizontal? 15. Section 2, page 3 Behaviour related violations; in Section 8 indicates deductions taken by Chair of SJ. Clarification: Once SJ is notified, the D-Panel takes the deduction; from the Final Score? 16. Not competing in correct order – can this apply to mixed groups? 17. Timing of application of neutral deductions: Line, time, apparatus, behaviour – always deducted from Final Score ANSWER YES There is no regulation for that Padding can be considered as a protector such as sponge on hips and ankles. Chinese ankle guards are OK if it’s not too big or too evident Beige is acceptable If only available in black it’s OK No. Yes Line judge will count number of attempts of warm up. ADD: FIG Newsletter 34 No, does not apply. For flight elements deduct for height or bent arms, etc. Yes, unless part of the choreography. Position of legs: Parallel to the floor is -0.1 only Legs at horizontal -0.1, below -0.3 D-Panel consider stretch jump if hip > is more than 135˚ or split less than 135˚ Proper position is point of feet touching knee or close to knee. Position must be aesthetic. If low leg is in passé position, deduct if leg is too low. Yes, no penalty. Is recommended to notify SJ. Hip angle is enough. No, SJ takes the deduction. No, only applies to teams. Secretary controls the order. Yes. Final = D + E Score For short exercise: there will never be a minus score; only “0” score. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Vault : 0.5,1.0, 2.0 Short Routine: 18. Sissone – if front leg is horizontal Does E panel deduct? 19.Clarify hip angle vs knee angle: 20. Incorrect Leg position .10 when is it applied? 21. Change leg ring leap – when back leg is not bent – should it be called switch leap? 22. Can a ring jump be credited with a straight back leg? 23. What is definition of Ring position 24. When is a stretched salto with LA turn not recognized as stretched? 25. Does E panel deduct for leg below horizontal in Ring Leap? Johnson leap with front leg bent or leg below 45˚ VAULT MOD 1. In Qualification, gymnast exceeds the 25 m run distance on their first Vault. As this is a neutral deduction it is taken off the Vault performed, but off V1 for purposes of Team and AA scores? Page 33 D recognizes split jump. No, Split jump with leg at horizontal is good. Sissone must land on 1 foot, with leg angle or recognize as split jump. Knee angle of 135˚ refers to tuck position. If knee angle almost straight – credit pike. Hip angle more than 90˚ .3 deduction until it becomes stretched. Pike jump angle refers to hip angle. Split leap ½ turn when body is not in precise position [e.g. cross vs side position-poor body alignment] plus leg position in specific elements: side leaps, straddle jumps and sissone. No – devalue and keep the family if recognize head release and upper body arch. If back leg is straight – devalue. Yes - 90˚ bend of back leg is a requirement only for ring leap and switch ring leap. Upper body arched, head release, closed ring position [feet to head height, almost touching head] Important to have hip extension and bent legs. If feet not almost touching head – devalue to C on BB. Can use developé technique in Ring Leap Most of the time will be credited as gymnast must open hips to turn. [except Full in double pike on FX and BB and UB dismounts.] (180 min. +). Application same - mostly for vault - salto stretched credited. Front salto pike full turn. not possible on floor - not enough time to pike and open - usually not extended stretch. Early pike most often happens on Vault for vaults with ½ and 1 ½ LA turn that land facing the table. No. Credit another element. Also if shoulders not turned 90˚ Taken from the Final Score of the vault performed. 2. Rules for CIII: Would a Yurchenko stretch with 1/1 twist [#4.32] be considered a different vault than a Front Handspring to Front Salto stretched with 1/1 turn [2.32]? Yes, they are from different groups and different second flight phase (bwd salto vs fwd salto) 3. Tsuk layout 1/1 and then nominates Yurchenko 1 ½ but performs 1/1; will this be the same flight phase deduction? 4. When has the run started and considered an additional run? Yes – consider the vault you see. When there is more than one step forward; any run towards the apparatus. Same interpretation for UB and BB mounts. Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique Supplement to 2013 FIG Code of Points for WAG – January 2014 Page 34 5. Is this correct: “Deduction for staggered/alternate hand placement for forward entry vaults Group 1,2,5 (not applicable for Salto fwd stretched with LA turn Group 5 vaults – e.g 5.31,5.32, 5.33)” 6. Second Flight Phase – Exactness of LA turn – applies to Cuervo and what other vaults? Yes 7. Safety collar for Yurchenko vaults: May it be used for vaults other than Yurchenkos? If used, must it be placed ‘properly’? (i.e. no gap between collar and board) or will there be a deduction – “0” vault? Yes, Criteria for not using safety collar mat is not applied to groups 1, 2, 3. [except 1.40, 1.50, 1.51, 1.52, 1.53] Code says: Includes Cuervo. UNEVEN BARS 1. Execution Principles: If the gymnast hits the bar and has an intermediate swing, do you deduct for both .5 + .5? 2. Is 1.408 a flight element? 3. If Coach brushes the gymnast but does not assist [e.g. gymnast swings into coach] what is the deduction? 4. What is the deduction for 2 unpermitted spotters? 5. If a gymnast performs a clear hip circle, splits legs early [before handstand/vertical] puts feet on the Bar, executes a sole circle, stands on bar to grasp the High bar what are the deductions? Only for intermediate swing No – flight requires a grip change of bars LB and HB – e.g. jump to HB immediate underswing ½ turn to handstand on LB as mount No deduction Deduct one time – 0.50 Consider the lower leg to apply angle of completion of element [.1/.3/.5] After sole circle apply 0.5 for jump from LB to HB. Same principle applies for cast to handstand. ADD: Empty Swing deduction 0.5 after Mar. 11 in CAN. – FIG Newsletter 34 6. When a gymnast has an empty swing, hits the One is a compositional deduction – Empty swing; bar and then falls – what are the deductions? and one an execution. Take both empty swing and 1.0 Fall. Do not deduct for the hit. 7. Empty swing in front support. Intermediate swing in front support – what is the difference? ADD: Note: Shaposhnikova with no or 1/1 twist exempted from this rule. 8. Glide kip to back hip circle: what are the deductions applied? 9. If a gymnast performs a clear hip circle with ½ turn, does not reach the vertical line [handstand] and swings back, are the .1/.3/.5 angle deductions in Article 9.4.2 the only deductions applied? 10. Flight element regrasp bar please review with examples when there is a grasp/ no grasp and DV/no DV. An empty swing is a compositional correction – required to perform the next element [swing in one direction, no element, swing in opposite direction]. Intermediate swing [0.5] is an error in performance of the exercise, an additional swing or action to perform the element [legs go up, down and up] After back hip circle, there is an empty swing deduction or intermediate swing is there is a pump action before the cast. The deduction for the angle of the cast before the back hip circle must also be applied. Yes, maybe body alignment too. Brushing or hitting is not enough. She must “deform” the bar. Both hands. What is the definition of ‘clear support’ for 4.101 and 4.104 [straddle circles forward and backward] 15. If a gymnast performs a pike sole circle with feet outside hands, what is the value? Is this the same element as 5.308? Is there a deduction for leg separation? 16. Clarification: a) Clear hip circle, does not reach within 10˚ of vertical, then falls: b) Clear hip circle with ½ turn, does not reach within 10˚ of vertical, then falls: c) Pak salto grasp LB go immediately into back hip circle: d) not within 10˚ of vertical and fall: DV? 17. CV? 18. RO flic flac 1/1 mount [1.509] to Stalder 1/1 – CV? 19. - apply empty swing deduction? Page 35 For flight elements within the exercise, the height is determined by the position of the shoulders as compared to the bar. For dismounts, the height is determined by the position of the hips as compared to the bar. When Endo or Endo in L grip do not pass through handstand [extend the hips past the vertical] – devalue one level. When Endo or L Grip Endo are performed with a turn, credit the value and deduct for the angle of turn completed even if the hip extension is past the vertical [doesn’t pass through handstand], could also deduct for body alignment L grip Endo 1/1 and L grip Endo 1/1 turn initiated on one arm = same element. However, if an Endo does not extend hips within 10˚ of handstand but continues into a second Endo, then the value is given [see Weiler kip example below] First Weiler kip is given credit as long as the body is in stretched position. Weiler kip straddle up to handstand: devalue DC To receive credit, the gymnast must be able to show a position that enables them to execute the next element. Same element - no deduction for legs outside hands. a) No DV b) 1 DV lower + angle of completion of element and fall c) DV + height + DV for back hip circle (followed by empty swing) d) DV C + angle of completion of element and fall. Deductions: Only the two first elements receive bonus D + X = 0.10 Yes E + D = 0.10 Yes. If stop after circle, apply 0.5 for intermediate pump/swing or empty swing 20. Under table 8.3 landing deductions “brushing apparatus is 0.3; but on bars is listed as 0.5 – this is a specific apparatus deduction – apply only during routine; but for dismount landing apply 0.3? Is specific for UB. If gymnast on UB dismount steps toward the apparatus and brush, apply 0.3 landing deduction Or, land and brush with hand/bottom the mat = 0.3 BALANCE BEAM 1. Is Aerial cartwheel and Aerial cartwheel with leg change considered the same element? Yes 2. BBE .1 CV + .1 SB one time? 3. Can you have dance-dance for CV? If no clear elevation, then devalue to D. TBD a) Yes b) No DV for mount. If she can perform “inside” the routine, you can give DV for that element. e.g 1.210 Not allowed a second attempt if on first attempt she touched the springboard. If remount after fall and falls again – deduct 2.0. Will be devalued to A; may not be repeated and receive credit. It the Handstand Mount is held 2 seconds, then the gymnast falls – no value as she must return to the beam for value. If the gymnast does not reach handstand and falls – can repeat. Repetition, no series if split jump to sissone.
