President’s Message
New Hampshire in the Fall - there is no better place! And of course this year it is all about
politics. The Mid-Term election cycle is heating up right here on our turf. You could be
voting in 28 days! No, you SHOULD be voting in 28 days. Please, please, please learn
about the people who are asking for your vote. This is no time to be apathetic! Our country is deeply in debt, energy costs are spiraling upward, the EPA is in our back yard pushing
up the cost of waste water treatment on the Seacoast, we are not adding enough new
jobs, our heath care system is a mess and we all know that Washington does not seem to
be getting the message. They are still polarized and dysfunctional. It is time for you to
step up and be counted. If you are an Independent, Republican or Democrat it is time to
get it together for our country. If you need a common sense approach to fixing Washington check out No Labels.
No Labels is a group of Republicans, Democrats and Independents who want our
country to work again. Their dozen proposals to Make Congress Work! By and
large do not require new laws or new spending, and they don't favor any party
or particular cause. They are simple, straightforward proposals to break gridlock,
promote constructive discussion and reduce polarization in Congress. They can
mostly be adopted all at once when the next Congress convenes in January 2015.
See more at: http://www.nolabels.org/make-government-work. Refreshing.
The Portsmouth Chamber will have some events focusing on No Labels. Look for
the notices.
New Hampshire will end its current biennium with a $19.5 million surplus, but
unfortunately that is $6.5 million less than anticipated for rollover into the next
biennium. Gambling will probably be on the table again, despite the fact that
casinos are closing, or are showing lower revenues all over the country. It is beginning to sound like the proponents are betting on a loser! Why, with the greatest place to live, work and play, would we want to diminish our brand for a quick
buck? As a business person does this make sense to you? And if casinos are not a
solution, which looks like the case, are we to expect a broad based tax? I would
submit that an income or sales tax would also be an attack on another part of the
NH brand: the NH advantage. Think about it. Talk about it. Vote, it is your future!

There is some good news at the Chamber. We have finally filled the remaining open position: Marketing and Communication. We are thrilled to welcome Terri Lane to the GPCC. It was very obvious early on that she would be a
good match with our “family”. And she started today. Also huge thanks to Briggs Buzzell for once again stepping
up and producing this month’s issue of Connections.

Tourism News: October 2014
FNO RECAP –
Once again the
beautiful young
ladies dressed in
living fauna provided by The Flower Kiosk and designed by Marcia
Hansen drew crowds to Market Square and into the
dozen participating shops throughout downtown on
September 5th. The excitement intensified when a clan
of Scotsmen strode about
town, clad in various Highland kilts from Celtic Crossing. Shops offered one-of-akind trunk shows, demonstrations, sales, snacks and
libations, creating a party
atmosphere throughout
town. The evening was
capped off with a Fashion
Runway Show at the
Hilton Garden Inn with
more than 40 models
from 10 shops wearing
fashion found in our local
shops. Save the date for
next year’s event, September 2, 2015.

arranged meetings with journalists/editors representing both online and print media, including Food
& Wine, Travel & Leisure, Afar, Skif.com, NY Daily
News, Rob Report, Huffington Post, Budget Travel,
