Telephone Interpreters:
Myth vs. Reality
Myth BUSTERS
FNW family physicians can now access pre-paid,
telephone-based professional medical interpreters through
The Provincial Language Service (PLS). You can access
the service during a patient consult through a quick and
easy 3-Step Process:
Myth: Medical interpreters will not tell me exactly
what the patient is saying; they will just summarize.
Reality: PLS’ professional interpreters are trained to
interpret exactly what the patient says. They all have
training to be interpreters, including, in many cases,
medical terminology. In the case of PLS interpreters,
the majority of the interpretation they do is in the
health care field; therefore they are very familiar
with healthcare related conversations.
1. Call the PLS: 1-866-425-0217
2. Provide the representative with your
access code: 845931
3. Put your cell phone/office phone on
speakerphone and get started!
Myth: Patients would rather use their family
members to interpret.
Reality: While this is true in some cases, patients often
prefer the anonymity of a professional interpreter,
especially for sensitive topics like sexual and mental
health. You should always offer an interpreter.
You or your office staff can also use telephone interpreters
to call patients at home. Follow the above steps and ask the
representative for a thrid-party connection to the patient.
180
PLS translation services are available in
languages
and dialects,
hours a day, days a week.

Exercise as Medicine
Heads UP!
Exercise as Medicine is a concept that is rapidly gaining
traction across North America.
The Integrated Health Network (IHN)
is Coming to Fraser Northwest
Several physicians and allied
health staff at RCH have
recently formed an informal
interest group surrounding the
promotion of exercise as an
effective medical intervention
for many chronic diseases.
They are beginning to look
at hospital and community
related projects that facilitate
the goal of increasing patient
participation in exercise. Physicians and other allied health
staff are in a powerful position to encourage exercise, but a
common barrier is the lack of tools and knowledge to do
this effectively.
An integrated Health Network involves Home
Health (HH IHN) establishing:
Meaningful, longer term connections
between HH client GPs and case managers
The expansion of the care management team
to include a surveillance nurse (SN) to regularly
monitor client progress by phone, and a client
services assistant (CSA) to do some of the
business functions previously done by
clinicians.
Incorporation of CARE Management
approaches & principles into daily practice
by case managers and the SN.
Are you a family practitioner with an interest in prescribing
exercise as part of your routine practice? Might you be
interested in participating in this group?
Watch for more information as this program rolls out
in the Tri-Cities area in spring/summer 2014 and
New Westminster in late summer/fall 2014.
