Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i’s 2013 Volunteers of the Year
The Volunteers of the Year (2013) Committee has chosen two
volunteers, both of whom are essential to their work for the
Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i.
Nancy Nott heard the
call for librarians in Hawai‘i
and moved here from
Canada in 1961. She began
her career at the Hawai‘i
State Library, followed by
Kaimuki Public Library, and
then as Branch Manager at
Liliha Public Library.
Sally Harper was a
Kindergarten teacher at Punahou
School. After she retired from teaching
she served on the Library Advisory
Commission and as a Trustee for the
Hawai‘i Library Foundation. Sally
began the Librarian of the Year and the
Excellence in Service Awards in 1997 and she has since served regularly on
their committees. Continuing as a
Director with Friends of the Library of
Hawai‘i when in 2005 FLH merged
with the Hawai‘i Library Foundation,
Sally remains a staunch supporter and
advocate for Hawai‘i‘s public libraries.
Sally‘s support is seen in Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i's first
year-round bookstore, opened in 2007. "Bill's Bookmobile" was
established in memory of Sally's husband and his love of reading.
Nancy retired in 1991 and
began volunteering for FLH
in 1992. While she is an
expert in many fields, her true love is Hawaiiana. She has also
volunteered at the Hawai‘i Historic Society for the past eight
years and believes her experience with the Hawaiiana section at
FLH is an asset for her work at the Hawaiian Historical Society.
Nancy has been culling the collection of Hawaiiana donations to
ensure that there will be a wide array of Hawaiiana titles
available at FLH’s 67th Annual Booksale beginning June 21 at
McKinley High School.
Native Books Nā Mea Hawai‘i
joins the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i again this
year as a sponsor for the 2013 Librarian of the Year
and Excellence in Service Program.
This beautiful kama‘aina store located in Ward
Warehouse features local products including clothes,
jewelry, original works of art, and books.
Owner Maile Meyer will present a $500 gift certificate
to each winner at the FLH Annual Meeting.

Christel Collins
Librarian of the Year
Edwin Kamikawa
Excellence in Service
Collins has been in the Hawai’i State Public Library
System (HSPLS) for twenty-one years. These were
preceded by a major in English at Humboldt State
University and the advice of her mother that she become a
librarian. Her positions in HSPLS included telephone
reference at the Hawai’i State Library as well as Children’s
and Branch Librarian at McCully-Mo‘ili‘ili Public Library.
Christel has an open and friendly but also thoughtful
personality. She listens with focused attention and has a
good sense of humor. These traits were very helpful as she
steered the Mānoa Public Library through the years,
overseeing the design and construction of a new building,
while deciding what to put in a temporary library and of
what to dispose. It was a major challenge for which she is
lastingly grateful to her staff and patrons for their support.
She is a woman with much energy, seeing the big picture,
yet having time for personal contact.
"We LOVE Christel - she has always been so helpful to
our entire family as we sought out ideas for books and
movies. She goes way beyond the basics. Christel has
given the gift of reading to our entire family." Connie
Conover
For nearly four decades, Edwin Kamikawa, IllustratorPhotographer of the Library Development Services
Section, has created attention-grabbing and high-quality
graphics and promotional items for all of Hawai’i’s 50
public libraries and administrative offices.
A consummate professional and a stickler for details,
Edwin’s versatile body of work comes in all forms:
business cards, print and digital forms, stationery, silkscreened HSPLS t-shirts, logos, program flyers, newsletters,
web graphics, shelf labels, ceremonial checks, banners,
signage, and much more. The HSPLS library card logo, the
notable Hawai’ian quilt design on library bags, and the
Friends of the Library of Hawai’i’s logo are beautiful and
outstanding examples of his graphic creations.
Described by his colleagues as a genuine, collaborative
team player, Edwin’s work incorporates the requestor’s
vision and creates a product that exceeds all expectations.
His eye-catching graphics appeal to all age levels and
convey information in an inviting and understandable
format. As one nominator expressed, “Everyone should
realize public libraries would be in trouble without a
professional illustrator to add ‘drawing power’ to our
print messages.”
Mahalo to the LOTY/EIS Committee for their dedication and passion in interviewing and choosing our winners!
