Since the historical communicative turn in the 1980s, second and foreign language education has grappled

with the problem of how to assess oral language ability. Of the various assessment formats that emerged over
the years, two types have shown remarkable stability. The format with the greatest currency is a version of
interview, often referred to as oral proficiency interview (OPI). Less widespread as a test format on its own,
but often used in conjunction with the OPI is a form of roleplay, the simulation of a real-life scenario. A critical
question to ask about these activities is what kind of information about the assessment target they generate,
and how to conceptualize that target in the first place.
Drawing on recent research on the assessment of pragmatics, I will address these questions from
the perspective of applied conversation analysis (CA). Applied CA makes visible how oral language
assessment is organized as interaction and has direct interventional applications to test and rubric
development and to interviewer and rater training.

Dr. Gabriele Kasper is Professor of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her
teaching and research focus on language and social interaction, in particular on applying conversation
analysis to multilingual interaction, second language learning and assessment, and standard research
methods in applied linguistics.
