I have a stable available for his aftercare but need advice as to what I should be doing for him and what to expect. Claire Barnes, Kent Castrating your horse T By Paula Broadhurst his is a question that is probably best answered by the veterinarian who is going to perform the castration on your horse. The way a castration is performed depends on the age, breed and temperament of the horse, the facilities available and the personal preference of the veterinarian performing the procedure. The first important detail to determine is that your stallion, or colt, has two normal testicles descended into the scrotum. If there is only one testicle present or if the testicles are high and not fully descended then the castration might need to be performed at an equine veterinary hospital with full surgical facilities as a more involved procedure may be required to complete the operation. Also, if your horse has enlarged inguinal rings then performing the castration in a hospital is often recommended. The age of your horse is also a consideration as an older stallion that has been actively covering will have much larger and well vascularised testicles versus a two-year-old colt that will be less well developed. With an older stallion the risks of complications is increased so your vet may suggest that the operation is performed in a hospital so that the vessels can be tied off and the surgery site closed. So assuming your horse is less than four years of age and has two normal testicles in the scrotum then the castration is likely to be able to be performed at your yard. The castration may then be done under standing sedation or under a general anaesthetic, and this will be decided based on a number of factors. The physical size of your horse is relevant as a miniature pony is usually too small to be able to castrate standing and will be done under a general anaesthetic. If your colt is quite sharp then again a general anaesthetic may be required to perform the operation safely. The personal preference of the vet performing the castration will also play a part in which way the operation is performed. I personally prefer doing castrations standing but other vets will prefer doing them ‘down’ under a general anaesthetic. After the operation, I usually advise my clients to keep the horse in a stable with a straw bed for 12 to 24 hours before turn out as much as possible, as standing in a stable seems to increase the risk of swelling. I like to have the horse in initially as it means they can be closely monitored for excessive bleeding, swelling, colic or any other serious complications that might occur in the first 24 hours. However, your own vet will have their preferred post operation protocol that they will advise you. There will often be some bleeding and swelling post operation but this should not be excessive. The wounds should also be monitored for anything hanging out; this is often just blood clots or some swollen tunic that might need to be trimmed off however, very rarely some abdominal tissue can come out through the inguinal ring which will need urgent veterinary attention. Sometimes everything can look like it is going very well but about a week post castration the scrotal area swells, this is usually because the wounds have healed too quickly and trapped fluid inside. This may need to be treated by opening the wounds back up again, anti-inflammatories and/or antibiotics. I advise that you speak to your own veterinarian regarding the situation with your horse and they will be able to give you more specific guidance as to what you should expect and the post operation requirements. H Spring Fever ow much damage did you suffer during the winter from the overload of wind and rain that prevailed? Apart from any concerns over the welfare of your equine, the ongoing problems the weather caused now need to be tackled. Many a curious cob will have escaped through fences that need repairing (speaking from personal experience), even if you are in livery never be afraid to ask the livery owners to check their fences and boundaries, horses going ‘walkabout’ will be putting themselves and livery owners at great risk. Cozee Homes is a reliable company established in 2003 and situated in East Sussex, so for some good old fashioned advice NagMag asked Company Director Donna Hunt what measures we should be taking now that Spring is upon us and hopefully weather conditions are stables and shelters. A small repair NOW will save a lot of money in the long run. Water may have seeped through causing rot to kick boards, no problem, Cozee Homes Equestrian Buildings can easily repair it. Have your horses chewed away at door frames where they have been kept in so much? Again, a simple repair for us to get it looking like new again. Watch out for rodents chewing their way in. If your roof has lifted just a fraction it will let water in and in time become a costly repair. The months from the end of March onwards are a great time of year to undertake any groundwork as working on the ground will leave less impact at this time of year and should avoid causing any muddy gateways. Donna has this to say about mobile field shelters: “ Mobile shelters by their very definition are supposed to be moved every 6 weeks, this is not always practicable in bad wet weather but from spring time onwards this is a practice that should be carried out. Always consider how you are placing your Field Shelter. The opening should be placed away from the prevailing winds and these shelters are probably more effective in the summer, providing a fantastic April 2014 NagMag ❘ 05 Cozee Homes Equestrian Buildings ❘ advertising feature protection for your equines from the sun and flies”. Not many people know that a donkey can carry many different types of diphtheria and Annabelle contracted the type that can be transferred to humans. She lost the use of speech, lost 3 and a half stone in weight, couldn’t eat or drink as a membrane causes the throat to close and nerve endings and muscles were all affected. Eventually after very little signs of improvement, her daughter introduced Annabelle to a Chinese Acupuncturist and the rest is history. That was seven years ago, and Annabelle now looks the very picture of fitness and health. She decided to look into a degree course in Acupuncture and although she did not have the necessary qualifications, because of her life skills the University of Greenwich took her on a 5 year course which she was able to attend at the nearby International College of Oriental Medicine at East Grinstead. This took her on a path that has become her entire life, a path that enables her to treat both humans and equines. Currently Acupuncturists are not 08 ❘ NagMag April 2014 treatment in many ways, the list is endless; lower back pain, IBS, fertility, anxiety, insomnia to name a few. A course of six to 10 treatments are usually recommended with occasional top ups. The costs are approximately £30 per session at the clinic. It is Annabelle’s desire to be able to educate people at a young age of the advantages of Oriental Medicine thereby avoiding pain killers and antibiotics and alleviating our over burdened National Health Service. Any schools interested in a presentation should get in touch with Annabelle directly. But hurry she is about to embark on a Masters degree in Clinical Research. The nice thing about Annabelle using Oriental Medicine is that her patients are so supportive of her, introducing friends and family members. It would appear that not only is Annabelle hooked but so are her patients, a great accolade to her methods and results for treating both Equines and Humans. Annabelle has 10 horses of her own and since graduating she has been treating them herself. As they are her own horses she is able to needle them but on visiting horses she is only able to use laser treatment. Five years ago, one of her mares was exhibiting horrendous behaviour and after a scan from a Vet it was found that a huge tumour the size of a rugby ball was sitting on her ovary. She would display behaviour similar to that of a Stallion. With treatment from Annabelle she is now so much better that she is regularly out competing and her condition is manageable. Annabelle will carry out a diagnosis for a client by considering pulse therapy, a tongue check where colour, size and macules are studied; eyes are checked for membrane, colour, iris and eyelids and the overall pattern of the horse, such as slow movement, energy levels and the meridian points; all offering clues which can lead Annabelle, like a treasure hunt to a diagnosis. Costs for treatment are usually £50 per session. Annabelle has had many successes with ailments such as Head Shaking, usually caused by acute or chronic stress and Gastric ulcers can be diagnosed by palpating specific points on the pericardium and spleen meridians; apparently cabbage is a great help in the treatment of this ailment. She failed to respond satisfactorily to a herbal protocol and it was suspected there was more going on. It was no surprise that after a scan a huge ovarian tumour was discovered. Although local vets advised removal, after consulting with experts from Newmarket the advice was that removal would render her unrideable and that was if she even survived the operation. Salsa’s tumour was not causing any discomfort but her hormones were very affected, with no production of LH and FSH, the female hormones, and excess production of testosterone. This made her behave like a very irrational stallion at times. Following an Oriental diagnosis and treatment with both herbs and acupuncture Salsa and Liz have progressed amazingly. It is a riding school open everyday and situated at the World Heritage Site of the Mineral Tramways and around Carn Brea Castle, with beach riding on beautiful Gwithian beach with miles of golden sands. They are BHS Highly Commended, ABRS, OFSTED Club Marked and Quality Tourism 4 star approved. For adults the holidays are tailored to suit the individual and run during Term Time with virtually unlimited riding including lessons in dressage, show jumping, cross country and side saddle, hacking around the stunning Cornish Countryside, swimming with the horses and beach riding, you choose what you want to do and the amount of hours you spend in the saddle. The price includes all food, riding and accommodation in twin bedded en suite rooms and use of the hot tub. Adults leave amazed at what they have achieved in the week and how much their riding has improved. Children’s and family holidays take place during all the school breaks and there is a set programme which includes lessons, hacking, beach riding, swimming with the ponies, vaulting and a horse show and Gymkhana. Horse activities start at 8 am and some days continue to 8pm. Other evenings we go to the cinema, shopping or have a BBQ and a dip in the hot tub. Everyday is fun packed and full of exciting things to do. All the instructors are qualified, First Aid trained and CRB checked. NagMag hears from a mother and son who booked with Cornish Riding Holidays. Alison is a lady in her forties and with her son, aged 8, she booked a riding holiday although not having ridden for twenty five years plus and her son still on the lead rein, she undertook the holiday with a certain amount of trepidation. The cross-country course to our right looked even more inviting, nip self, you are old! We received a lovely welcome from Janet, she showed us to our twin room, which was bright, clean, comfortable with en suite, television and plenty of storage (we had come with quite a lot of kit!). The bungalow was to be our base for the week, a lovely communal lounge which as it happened was where as a group we spent most evenings, laughing, reminiscing days events, soothing our aching joints and digesting our beautiful meals. A clean welcoming bathroom , which proved essential for soaking aching joints later in the week. A cosy dining room from which we enjoyed beautiful home cooked food, wholesome, tasty and plenty of it throughout the week. The afternoon moved swiftly to our induction lesson. Karen and Janet asked all of us (eight of us by now) what sort of horse/pony we would like, what would we like to do on our holiday, was there anything special we wanted to do, what did we want to achieve, what did we not want to do, they could not of been anymore comprehensive in getting an understanding of what our wishes as “customers” were. I had no specific requests just wanted to relive my childhood and my love of horses. My son had specific requests, he would like a chestnut pony with a white stripe and he wanted to canter and jump, this is the young boy still on the lead rein. He had spotted a pony in a stable he liked the look of (I told him she was too big) but his heart was set. So with an over riding aim to please Karen got the chestnut pony out and she was to become my sons pony for the week (…. And more but that is a whole different story!) All horses and ponies were well looked after, a whole variety of breeds, sizes, abilities, what pleased me most was the ponies still had their characters, they were happy in their work. The induction lesson went well, I still loved riding even after all those years, our abilities were assessed and we were split into two groups of four. My son was in a different group. We left for a hack for us to get used to our horses, as I happily rode away I heard my son telling the instructor in his group yes he could canter , I smiled, knowing he could not but I trusted his leader so much I thought what will be will be. As the week evolved we did so much, beech rides, a stunning beach, miles of sand, long canters on the water front, swimming with the ponies in the lake, a truly out of this world experience, hours getting to know our ponies, flat work lessons, jumping, yes jumping lessons, cross country, day rides, western riding, lunge lessons, amazing opportunities all worked around what each and every guest wanted to achieve. Seven hours riding a day fantastic. As a group we achieved so much, far more than we hoped for and that lovely arena full of bright jumps, we jumped them, every one of them, I smile to this day because that was to change my life forever. Despite varying abilities in our groups the instructors worked tirelessly to ensure despite ability everyone achieved their personal goals, no one felt they were holding up a group, nor do I believe anybody felt they did not achieve their goals, I know everyone did. My son, did he canter, yes for miles, did he jump, yes he did, this is the little boy that arrived with a good little seat but no rein/head control, the improvement in a week was immeasurable. The week flew past we said our goodbyes and drove away. Would we return? Undoubtedly. My son has subsequently had two un-accompanied children’s holidays when he was nine and 11. As a parent I was totally confident (after experiencing the venue for myself) he would be in excellent safe hands, learning lots, mixing with children in a safe, secure yet free environment. He loved both holidays; I still smile at some of his stories, like how he spent £5 on polo’s for the ponies!! and that we had packed a wash but he did not realise that until day five!! I have also had two further adult only holidays. Faultless. Cornish riding holidays is a very special place, in a beautiful part of the country, amazing hacking, beautiful countryside. Very peaceful too. Excellent instructors working with a common aim of providing a lovely holiday for guests. Karen and Janet run a very professional business with excellent training, education for staff to ensure fun but safe experience for guests. It gave me time to re evaluate my life, my career, my dreams ….. That is a very long story but needless to say that little chestnut pony with a white stripe is a very big part of our family, as is her friend who I enjoyed for my first week re living my childhood. A T he majority of regular riders know that the British Horse Society run an approval scheme for riding schools, but many riders do not realise that there are grades of approval. When the B.H.S. approve a riding school, they are principally concerned with the welfare of the animals and the safe condition and fit of their saddlery and equipment. However, before approving a riding school as a Training Centre, a Fellow of the B.H.S. will carry out an inspection, every two years, of the horses and their ability, as well as the qualifications and ability of the instructors. For example, in Cornwall where the T.M.International School of Horsemanship operate, it is one of only two B.H.S. Approved Training Centres in the whole county. After one inspection, Inspector Jane Goldsmith F.B.H.S. wrote, “This is a caring school where pupils are well taught and looked after.” This means participants in the school’s instructional riding holidays for unaccompanied teenagers are assured of a high standard of instruction from B.H.S. qualified instructors, on well schooled horses and ponies. Captain Ted Moore and his partner Mary, the proprietors of T.M.International, believe that clients should not have their mounts brought to them, all ready to mount, as they do not learn any of the skills required Fun-filled holidays for teenagers! to care properly for a horse or pony. Therefore, their instructional riding holiday clients are taught how to bring in their mount from the paddock, groom it, put on its equipment and after riding it, take off its equipment, sponge the equine off if sweaty, feed it and turn it out in the paddock. The “jewel in the crown” of T.M.International is the fantastic hacking available on Bodmin Moor, on the edge of which the school is located. This means that road work is minimal and on quiet unclassified roads. The daily routine is a lesson in the morning, together with riders of similar riding ability and a hack out on the moors in the afternoon, where wild life abounds, including feral ponies. Numbers are small, so it means clients enjoy lots of personal attention and come away having learned a lot! During school term time T.M. trains Working Pupils for B.H.S. teaching qualifications, e.g. International Instructor Level 1 (B.H.S.A.I.) which are the only equestrian qualifications which are recognised world wide. Visitors ranging from complete beginners to the more experienced rider enjoyed an action packed afternoon of activities and an inspiring visit from special guest, international event rider, Francis Whittington. The open day celebrated the launch of the latest round of specialist adult riding lessons, Take Back the Reins (TBTR), a seven week course of lessons based on the participants personal goals delivered in a fun and social atmosphere. The programme has been developed by the British Equestrian Federation’s Olympic and Paralympic legacy scheme, Hoof. Visitors received some great nutritional advice from Saracen Horse Feeds and Martin Channings local tack shop did a roaring trade. Louise Matthews was thrilled with the positive response, especially the new TBTR courses which saw plenty of visitors signing up to take part at the weekend. “The day was fabulous and we have had some really nice comments. Francis was a big draw, giving a great talk on his riding background and future ambitions commented Louise who has run the East Sussex based riding school for over 10 years. Professional event rider, Francis Whittington, gave a demonstration on Henry the mechanical horse and even encouraged several first time riders on board for some helpful tips, “All in all brilliant job organising it. It was great watching someone who had never sat on a horse before and to be able to show them how much fun can be had riding and enjoying the sport we all love.” “I had no choice but to ride as a child as my mum had a riding school, so I am a huge supporter of local equestrian centres and what they do. Grove did a cracking job for all levels of rider who came yesterday”, enthused the 2014 CICO squad member. He aims to finish it before racing on Saturday June 7th – just three weeks before this year’s Shire Horse Race on Saturday June 28th. ‘The only down side of doing it at Lingfield is that the horses will have been in training for the race,’ laughed Tony who has two children with wife Michelle and three from a previous marriage. ‘I’m just hoping they don’t take one look at the track and think they’re in the race – this is about endurance, not speed!’ NM E ver since meeting Tony Golding we have followed, with interest and delight, the photographic path that he has trod. He never ceases to amaze and surprise with his special eye for capturing the true spirit of a horse and the very essence of the special bond between a horse and rider. His photography is unique and we know find that Tony is unique. He is a man driven by passion. That passion now sees Tony selflessly giving back to society after dear ones have been taken away. Shire horse fan Tony Golding is to attempt a recordbreaking 34 hours in the saddle – despite NEVER riding a horse before. The amateur photographer, who fell in love with the gentle giants while capturing them on film, is now in training for the epic ride in aid of two charities close to his heart. He wants to raise £50,000 for Breast Cancer Research and his local charity, Hospice in the Weald, by taking on the saddle-sore challenge in June with the help of Hurst Green Shires and Lingfield Park Racecourse. The 57-year-old explained: ‘I want to do this to raise years-old, but it terrified me and I never got back on. Now, 52 years later, I’ve decided to learn to ride so I can stay in the saddle for 34 hours – each hour to represent a year that Hospice in the Weald has been running.’ As a lorry driver, the only saddle Tony is used to is the one in the cab of his vehicle, but he is determined to see through the 136-mile ride, which will involve 10 shire horses riding for two hours each on Lingfield’s All-Weather track. Each ‘session’ will involve buddy riders to ensure Tony doesn’t fall asleep and is kept motivated on the ride. Tony, from Paddock Wood in Kent, is hoping each ‘buddy’ will be sponsored to help him reach his ambitious fundraising goal. ‘I was petrified when I got on the first shire, Hercules, at the beginning of the training sessions in January,’ he admitted. ‘I used some steps to climb on him and was really nervous. It felt completely alien to me and immediately brought back that feeling of when I was a boy and terrified. The hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end. ‘But then I remembered why I am doing it. I have lost money for two brilliant charities and also to raise the profile of the Shire Horse because the breed needs promoting. ‘I did get on a horse when I was about five or six- two very close friends to cancer – one to breast cancer and one to pancreatic and my father-in-law had nonHodgkins lymphoma.
