AWED AND ODD
is our Worship Theme for Advent:
Abraham Joshua Heschel once wrote: “awe precedes
faith. In other words, we won’t be a people of faith,
cultivating spiritual vitality or reaching new people with
our faith, unless we have a renewed sense of awe in who
God is and all that God has done and is doing for us.”
What is awe? Awe is the response to God’s palpable
presence in our lives. Awe is when we see God in the
world around us. You know awe; it’s what takes your
breath away because it’s a holy moment. Awe is...a
precious child, a person who has lived long and well, a
sunset, hope in the midst of disaster. We experience
awe when we are momentarily transported out of our
own personal concerns and self-awareness. It’s literally
the absence of self-centeredness because we are
centered on God in the world and people around us.
Let’s get awed to become odd. Odd in the way that
Eugene Peterson puts it in his translation of Romans
12:3: “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture
that you fit into it without even thinking.” Let’s get odd
in our worldview so that we see others in trouble,
hurting, homeless, hungry, lonely, in the brokenness of
our world’s condition...and we lock them into view as we
reach out to them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
During Advent, we want to recover acts of cultivating
“odd” practices such as Peace in the Midst of Conflict,
Love in the Midst of Hate, Joy in the Midst of Despair,
Hope in the Midst of Hopelessness, Presence in the
Midst of Loneliness, and Praise in the Midst of Suffering.
Advent Bible Study

evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the

“Christmas From the Back Side”
Popular and beloved author J. Ellsworth Kalas
presents new insight into the biblical story of
Christmas.
Kalas approaches the season
through the “back side” – through a unique
starting point, a creative retelling, a new “lens,”
or the eyes of a minor character.
Kalas’ creative approach both clarifies basic
teachings and introduces new possibilities of
meaning, even for those who are most familiar
with the Christmas story.
Books are available for a cost of $8.00.

Sierra Madre United Methodist Church
Celebrates 60 Years!
I found the file for our history as of 50 years. I thought it might be helpful to remember/learn about what’s happened
over the years. Now, we need to add a history of the last 10 years. And then in January begin planning for our next 10
years!
- Pastor Linda
December 3, 1953 is the date of the founding of our church, which was ORIGINALLY named CHURCH OF OUR
REDEEMER. Meeting in the original estate home, the charter members had arranged for purchase of the three acres of
landmark property and received approval for a zoning variance. The first pastor was Rev. Raynor S. Smith.
In 1955, the name was changed to SIERRA MADRE METHODIST CHURCH and the Trylon was the first new structure on
the property. It was dedicated by interim pastor Mark Trotter.
Our Sanctuary was built in 1956, with a church member, Bart Steed in charge of the construction. Rev. Chilton C.
McPheeters led the first service in the new sanctuary, which was consecrated on Sunday, November 4 1956. The
Consecration Service was led by Bishop Gerald Kennedy.
A parsonage was purchased at 689 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard in 1957. Sunday School classes filled most of the original
estate home. The Education Building was constructed in 1965 to meet the needs of the Sunday School enrollment.
The original master plan for our facilities was completed with the construction of the Fellowship Hall in October, 1970.
A new parsonage was constructed in 1984, at 718 W. Montecito. One of our church members, Harlan Pederson, was
the architect for this project.
Under the leadership of Rev. Elwood Wissman, the congregations of Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church and
Sierra Madre United Methodist Church celebrated their merger. The merger service was held on June 7, 1987,
followed by a celebratory luncheon.
Following an earthquake in the late 1980’s and after a long period of discussion and planning, the original estate home
was demolished. A new building, the Sierra House was constructed in 1993 under the direction of Gary Bottemer and
dedicated in memory of charter member, William Heller, in 1997.
The large Methodist emblem was hand painted on a wall of Hartzell Hall by church member Corky Champlain in 1994.
This outstanding emblem is visible from the intersection of Sierra Madre Blvd. and Michillinda Ave.
Rev. Holly Reinhart-Marean arrived in 2000 to serve as our pastor.
A play area for our children was established next to Sierra House. The area was dedicated to the memory of Martha
Bray in 2002.
We celebrated our 50th Anniversary during the year 2003. The entire year saw many events that brought back past
memories, including visits by former pastors, a slide presentation on our history by Larry Bevington, and a great Banquet
in Hartzell Hall. Bishop Mary Ann Swenson provided our sermon in December of 2003.
Dear Sierra Madre UMC
Members and Friends,
It’s that one time of the year again!
60th Birthday Celebration and
Library Lounge Dedication
Sunday December 8, 2013! Our Library Lounge has
a great new look as well as becoming much more
comfortable. The new couches are actually the old
ones, with major work making it a pleasure to use
and to enjoy the re-upholstery. New carpet, redone lamps and tables, and re-fashioned pillows
complete the look.
Let’s show our appreciation for the hardworking staff at our church. We are
taking an offering for the Christmas
Staff Gift on Sundays, December 1, 8,
15, and 22 or you may send it to the
church office by December 23. Please
note “Staff Gift” on your check or
envelope so we can let them know how
much we appreciate them.
Thank you to June Drenten for her many hours of
work and planning.
June will gladly answer
questions about the makeover. Thanks also to John
Werthwein for his help with the painting of the
Library Lounge.
And have a Merry Christmas!
Jo Ann Williams, Lay Leader
Couches in the Library Lounge were upholstered by
Custom Design Upholstery in Pasadena. The carpet
is from Apramian Carpet & Flooring in Pasadena.

We are scheduled to work at the Bad Weather
Shelter on Saturdays, January 11 and February 8.
Sign-ups will begin mid-December. We need
people to work at the shelter and others to make
chili or cookies in advance. Cindy Crismer can
supply you with the chili recipe. This year the
Shelter will be weather-activated throughout the
season, (40% chance or rain, or predicted
temperature under 40 degrees), and we will not
know if the shelter will be open until noon on the

The Real Meaning of Christmas
Every time a hand reaches out to help another,
That is Christmas.
Every time someone puts anger aside
And strives for understanding,
That is Christmas.
Every time people forget their differences
And realize their love for each other,
That is Christmas.
May this Christmas bring us
Closer to the Spirit of Human Understanding,
Closer to the Blessing of Peace,
Closer to the Christ Child –
And the Real Meaning of Christmas.
