International seminar on
‘Architecture for Sustainable and Resilient Habitat: Think Local'
Organized by Institute of Architects Bangladesh
DHAKA SEPTEMBER 27 2014
BRIEF
It is becoming increasingly obvious that natural calamities induced by climate change are already affecting human settlements
on an unprecedented scale in the wake of hurricane Sandy, Aila, Sidr, Katrina, the Indian ocean earthquake and tsunami,
tsunami induced Fukushima Daiichi disaster, 2005 Maharashtra floods etc. This has triggered a global effort to increase
resilience of human habitat. Reducing, recycling and reusing resources to reduce impact of cities and built environment on the
environment is now as crucial as ever.
The issue of sustainability and resilience is extremely pertinent in Asia, which is, at present, home for 4.3 billion people. By 2030
an estimated more than half of the world's urban population will live in Asian cities. By 2025 Asia alone will have at least 10
megacities. Cities with high density in Asia will be among the most vulnerable to disasters.
Our ancestors have adapted lifestyles, livelihood and habitat to changing natural conditions for thousands of years. They were
also adept at the stewardship of natural resources in close connection with locale specific environmental, social economic and
cultural practices. Tapping into local wisdom may hold the keys to a better future.
Architects must look in to the past, the vernacular and look at the present and look forward to the future pedagogy &
technology in responding to the challenge of striking a balance between economy, growth, sustainability and resilience in our
cities and habitat, in the context-responsive framework.
HIGHLIGHTS
KEYNOTE SPEECH
Ar. Dr. Ken Yeang. Principal, T R Hamzah and Yeang, Malaysia
“I'm an ecologist first, an architect second." -Ken Yeang, Eco architect
"One of the 50 people who could save the planet." -The Guardian

questions of style to confront issues of sustainability and how we can build in harmony with the
natural world…..” - Lord Norman Foster
FOCUS SPEECH
Ar. Eric J. Cesal. CEO, Architecture for Humanity, USA
Eric J. Cesal graduated in Architecture, Construction Management and Business Administration
from Washington University in St. Louis in the worst depression to hit the US since the 1930's. He
published “Down Detour Road: An Architect in Search of Practice” from the MIT Press In 2010.
This widely acclaimed book deals on the state of the architecture profession and future areas
where architects might expand the footprint of their services.
In the same year, he joined Architecture for Humanity (AFH), the voluntary organization formed
by Cameron Sinclair in 1999 and began work in earthquake devastated Haiti. One of his key areas
of focus is the improvement of resilience in vulnerable settlements. AFH has published “Design
Like You Give a Damn [1] +[2]”, extensive compendiums of projects and practices aimed to
enhance resilience, emergency shelters and improve life of the people who are less fortunate
than those who can hire an architect.
.....and several presentations on sustainable design by ARCASIA Member Institutes.
