Monteith Fun Run
We did it!! The Monteith PTO wants to thank you for all your help and
pledge support for the 2014 FUN RUN. We are so pleased to announce
that we raised $15,774.45 on-line and in-school pledges for our 2014
Fun Run. We also received $3,004.00 in gift donations for our raffle.
Students had a lot of fun exercising and learning how to support a cause. All the money
that is raised will enrich and impact your child’s educational experience at Monteith Elementary. Your donations support programs such as: Think Through Math, Literacy Library,
One Book One School, Classroom Magazine Subscriptions, field trips, and much more!
Again, thank you for your support!

New medications form required for 2014-15 school year
The Board of Education recently adopted a new medications form that will be required annually
beginning in the 2014-15 school year to administer any medication, including over the counter
medications provided by parents or guardians.
We are notifying you of this change now so that as you make appointments for sports physicals or immunizations, you can take this with you to obtain the required physician signature. For this
guideline, “physician” refers to any health care provider licensed by the State of Michigan. This form
was developed to support our revised Board Policy 5330, which meets new provisions of the State of
Michigan Model Policy for Administering Medications to Pupils at Schools. “Medication” includes prescription, non-prescription and herbal medications, and include those taken by mouth, inhaler, injection, and drops or applied to the skin. Medication must be kept in a locked school location, and in a
labeled container as prepared by a pharmacy, physician, or pharmaceutical company with the pupil’s
name, the name of the medication, the dosage, and the frequency of administration. For more detail
on this or any school board policy and guidelines, visit www.gpschools.org and under the School
Board dropdown, click Policy. You can use the search tool to find information by key words.
The annual written permission form MUST be signed by both the parent and physician.
This new form is now available on the district website www.gpschools.org and will be part of the
online registration process. Please download it today and take to your next appointment.

Field Day 2014
What a difference a couple of days made! After our rain out on Wednesday, the weather for
Field Day was superb!!!. I feel very fortunate to have the support of the PTO and an army
of parents, grandparents, and Grosse Pointe North student volunteers to make Field Day
such a wonderful day. I especially want to thank those parents that went back out in the
pouring rain to bring the equipment back inside after it became obvious that it just was not
going to stop raining!!!!Thank you volunteers and thank you PTO for sponsoring this great
event. Field Day would not be possible without the support provided by Principal Keith
Howell and Monteith’s faculty. A special thank you to Principal Keith Howell and all our
wonderful staff for their support of this event. - Mrs. Frederick
Field Day 2014 - A Great Success!!
With 32 different event stations, students had plenty of opportunity for both participation and even a
little competition. Students traveled in groups from station to station challenging their skills. Some of
the events were designed for skill and some for maximum fun!! This year some of the favorite events
were: Angry Birds, CARS, Run Rabbit Run, Shoe Kick and Sponge Bob. Monteith students displayed a
high level of cooperation and good sportsmanship.
Monteith parents, you have one more reason to be proud of your kids!!
Volunteers are the Greatest!!
This year our Monteith Family can boast of over 100 involved parents/grandparents PLUS high school
students from Grosse Pointe North earning community service hours. Volunteers ran stations, set up
events, filled water balloons and helped with all the details of Field Day. An event this large is only
possible with the help of many volunteers. We are very fortunate to have so many generous parents
and volunteers. Thank you to all of the volunteers who contributed their time and hard work to make
Field Day a great success!
A Special Acknowledgment . . . . . . .
.. . . . . . . . must go to Ty Lefebvre and Gail Howe. These “field day” moms organized the army of volunteers
in addition to shopping for all the supplies, filling water jugs and just overall keeping things running
smoothly!!! A special thank you to “The Red Barons” football program for donating the Capri Suns.
Thank you for their generosity. And one more thank you….. OF COURSE thank you to Mark
Cwiklinski for donating the water for all our volunteers!

Ice Cream Social Thank You!
The weather was perfect and the turnout was great! The Monteith PTO would like to thank all the
volunteers that helped with the Ice Cream Social. This is one of our biggest and most fun events at
Monteith! This is something our students look forward to all year! With special thanks to all the
wonderful Monteith and community parents, as well as, elementary, middle and high school students
who volunteered their time and energy. This year the NJHS and YAF chapters of
Michigan also volunteered. Thank you for your commitment and dedication.
We couldn't do this family friendly social event without you!
Thank you! Monteith Rocks!

Celebrating Differences
Building Relationships
Monteith Diversity Committee
Monteith Diversity News
The summer is on its way and our first year as the Monteith Diversity Committee was a huge
success! We started with our kickoff event celebrating Japanese culture through the art of Origami. Special visits from the Japanese Consulate of Detroit and many sponsors including Kroger Sushi
Dept., art work from Noboku Yamasaki of the Grosse Pointe Art Center, and showing clips from
PBS documentary Between the Folds, created a well rounded and memorable time. A few months
ago we were enlightened by Carmen Nnamdi, founder of Nataki Talibah school, as she taught us
new concepts of discussing ethnicity. Our goal of celebrating differences and building relationships
is being realized, as we had Cub Scouts receiving diversity awards for attending origami night and
we were joined by members of the Maire diversity committee and invited by community groups in
Grosse Pointe Park to participate in a panel discussion about race and diversity in the Grosse
Pointes.
Diversity is a topic that is vast and only limited by our ideas of the world. I hope that all Monteith families have wonderfully diverse experiences over the break. We look forward to seeing you
at our next event "Line Dancing Around the World", February 2015.
