Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the successful leadership and
management of Ghost River Rediscovery (GRR) for consistent achievement of its
mission and organizational objectives. The ED’s major mandate is to ensure that GRR
has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission and vision, and toward which it
makes consistent and timely progress on its goals. As the senior representative of
GRR, the ED clearly understands, demonstrates and practices the values and
philosophy of the organization. Other key responsibilities include fund development,
optimal use of organizational finances, staff and resources, long range fiscal planning
and ensuring GRR remains responsive to the needs of the community.

Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan
to guide the organization
Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues
that affect the organization
Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Director on all aspects of the
organization's activities
Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director and
between the Executive Director and staff
In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization
Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and
jointly with the Board when appropriate
Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the
organization's community profile
Provide a role model of ethics in all activities, upholding all policies and
procedures to set an example for all those who work within the circle of GRR
Operational planning and management
• Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans that
incorporate goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of
GRR.

Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization,
initiating and encouraging a positive organizational culture and spirit,
empowering those who work within the circle of GRR to explore the worlds
within themselves, between on another and the natural world.
Ensure the drafting of policies for the approval of the Board and preparation of
procedures to implement organizational policies; review existing policies on an
annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
Ensure that personnel, client, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and
privacy/confidentiality is maintained
Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda and supporting
materials, and supporting recruitment, orientation and development of Board
Members
Program/Services planning and management
• Ensure new and existing programs have the Cultural leadership, guidance and
support/Staff/Liaison personal required to support GRR’s Vision and Mission
• Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's
programs and services
• Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to
the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board
• Monitor departmental performance against goals to ensure that progress is
being made, and that corrective action is taken if necessary.
Human resources planning and management
• Draw on the strength of indigenous traditions and the wisdom of the Elders to
re-establish a connection among the land and all people who work with GRR
• Review and approve recommendations of the Director of Operations regarding
staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
• Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and
practices including the development of job description for all staff
• Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all
appropriate legislation and regulations
• Ensure recruitment and selection of staff that have the right technical and
personal abilities to help further GRR’s mission
• Ensure that all staff receives an orientation to the organization and that
appropriate training is provided
• Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes
monitoring the performance of staff on an ongoing basis and conducting an
annual performance review
• Provide professional development opportunities, coach and mentor staff as
appropriate to improve performance
• Ensure discipline of staff when necessary using appropriate techniques; and
release of staff when necessary using appropriate and legally defensible

Financial planning and management
• Oversee the adequacy and soundness of the financial structure, policies and
procedures of GRR, providing regular updates at Board meetings to ensure
Transparency and Accountability
• Work with staff and the Board to prepare a comprehensive budget
• Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board
• Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed
• Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and
monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
• Oversee the annual audit
• Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the
organization
• Maintain and develop relationships with current, past and potential donors
• Research funding sources, oversee the development of fund raising plans and
write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization
• Take an active role in all aspects of Resource Development
• Ensure fundraising records are maintained and current
• Ensure that the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation,
withholding payments, donations
Community relations/advocacy
• Maintain good relations with First Nations community and ensure local protocols
are followed and traditional rights and ownership are respected.
• Represent GRR’s point of view to agencies, organizations and the general public
• Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with
community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve
the goals of GRR
• Display high standards of honesty in all relations; safeguard the reputation of
GRR
Risk management
• Identify and evaluate the risks to GRR’s people (clients, staff, management,
volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to
control risks
• Ensure maintenance of official records and documents and compliance with
federal, provincial and local regulations
• Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and
adequate insurance coverage
• Ensure that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions and limitations
of the insurance coverage

Qualifications
The Executive Director requires, at minimum, an undergraduate degree in a social
sciences, human service, education/recreation or management area with 5 years
progressive management experience in social work, youth-focused program delivery or
consulting. Must be knowledgeable in indigenous cultural traditions, protocols, history,
current issues and global trends. Demonstrated strong leadership, communication and
financial management skills are necessary. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
and at minimum, hold a Class 5 Driver’s license. Clean criminal and child intervention
record checks will be required.
Working Conditions
This position may require occasional, predetermined evening or weekend hours.
Physical Requirements
The majority of time is spent in an office environment at a desk, frequently working at a
computer. The ED may sometimes work in nonstandard workplaces, particularly through
the summer when supporting GRR outdoor programs.
