It’s time to celebrate Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at
Denison University! It is our hope that this newsletter updates
you about our FSL community at Denison. This edition will give
a snapshot of each of our organizations and the good work they
have done so far this semester. From programs to brotherhoods
and sisterhoods, philanthropies and service, these updates are
sure to excite.
To give you a general overview of FSL, we currently have 17
Greek-lettered organizations whose members comprise nearly
38% of Denison’s student population. All chapters collaborate
through four governing councils and through monthly FSL
Leadership Meetings to promote the development of the
community. Denison is also home to two Greek Honorary
groups, Order of Omega and Rho Lambda. These groups are
composed of members from all four governing councils and
support service, scholarship and achievement throughout the
entire community.
This fall we created a new Facebook Page, “Denison Fraternity
& Sorority Life.” We enjoyed participating actively in the
national Hazing Prevention Awareness week in September. We
are also proud to say the FSL grade point average is consistently
above the all-student average at 3.17 and that our members have
completed 1,619.5 service hours so far this semester.
We hope you enjoy the first FSL Newsletter!

Kappa Kappa Gamma:
We had our philanthropy event, Kappa
Kornhole, earlier in October. We raised
over 600 dollars for our national
philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental! RIF
is an organization whose goal is childhood
literacy.
Beta Theta Pi:
We went to a church in Newark with the
Delta Gammas on Saturday November 8th
to help make 1,200 pizzas for local
families! Also in November we helped
clean a local park with the Kappa Alpha
Theta women. Next semester we will all
participate in a Bystander Intervention
Training session that will promote
community safety and respect.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc:
So far this semester, Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. Pi Kappa chapter has done
four fantastic programs. In September, we
hosted Crimson and Cream, Lady SelfEsteem where we talked about how to
empower each other as women while
eating ice cream. In October, we held
Study Tables for the Denison community to
focus on their upcoming midterms. In
November, we collected donations for
Operation Christmas Child that sends gifts
to children in other countries. Also we
tabled in the student union for the “A Million
Thanks” where Denisonians wrote thank
you letters to our past and present troops
in honor of Veterans Day.
Kappa Alpha Theta:
This fall we promoted our philanthropy
Court Appointed Special Advocates
through our annual fall philanthropic event,
Cupcakes for CASA. We celebrated the life
changing relationships and voice CASA
volunteers provide for underage children
struggling in foster care and the judicial
system. In note of sisterhood and
scholarship, we have had two formal
meetings with neighboring Kappa Alpha
Theta chapters of Ohio State and Ohio
Wesleyan. We collectively worked to
improve upon scholarship modules and
philanthropic efforts inside and outside of
the Denison Community. The Ohio
Historical Society recently honored our
Wee White House on the hill as the oldest
house in Granville, and held a plaque
dedication in our front lawn! Feel free to
stop by and read about our history on the
plaque.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc:
The men of Phi Beta Sigma hosted an
event known as "The Color Line of
comedy" where members of the Denison
community came together to discuss the
differences and Similarities that lie
between White sitcoms and African
American sitcoms. In addition, working with
the men of Phi Iota Alpha we participated
in a campus wide clean up where we went
around picking up trash helping clean out
campus.
Pi Beta Phi:
October 13th was Delta Gamma’s annual
philanthropy event: anchor splash! Pi Phi
showed support for Service for Sight
throughout the week
collecting box tops and glasses to donate.
Pi Beta Phi’s flag football team had an
amazing season! Although it was short, the
girls made quite an impression.
The team made it all the way through the
regular season, and into the playoffs,
where they unfortunately lost to
Delta Gamma in overtime.
Lamda Chi Alpha:
The last month has been busy for Lambda
Chi Alpha. The brothers collaborated with
DCA to help with Homelessness and
Hunger Week and volunteered at the YES
Clubhouse. The following week was Fall
Bash- LXA's annual philanthropy that
supports the Feeding America Initiative.
Over the course of the week,
over 15,000 pounds of food were raised for
Mid-Ohio Food bank. We also held the first
Fall Bash event! The student band
Chowdah performed and guests enjoyed
food, games, and even a mechanical bull.
LXA thanks Moe's BBQ, CLIC, and all
others who came and helped make this
possible. LXA also extends special praise
to Patrick White whose leadership was
essential for the event's success.
Sigma Chi:
The Men of Mu enjoyed a very successful
fall. We hosted a haunted house on the
evening before Halloween, which was a
huge success and we wanted to thank
everyone who attended. Over 150 students
made their way through the housee…..and
all 150 survived our demons. On
December 7th, we initiated 8 new fine
young gentlemen in the fall class.
We are excited for the spring semester and
hosting out annual philanthropy event,
DERBY DAYS! We look forward to
hopefully having the opportunity to work
with more chapters and organizations
throughout the rest of the year!
Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc:
One of the biggest things FIA does
annually is have our Phiota Week. We
kicked it off this year on November 8th with
a Video Game Tournament, followed by a
campus clean up with Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity, Inc on the 9th, an informational
presentation about the fraternity on the
10th, and a program where people
answered, "What will you be remembered
for?"We held dance lessons with Sigma
Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.
followed by the culmination of Phiota Week
with a party at Lamson Lodge.
Delta Gamma:
Beta Zeta has been busy this semester
with service! Our DG’s volunteered at the
Columbus walk for ALS with Iota chapter of
Phi Delta Theta, assisted a local blind
woman by cleaning her home in Newark,
OH and worked the pizza sale making
1,200 pizzas to be sold for the Licking
County Center for the Visually Impaired.
In October, the chapter held one of their
largest and most successful Anchor
Splashes yet, raising $13,000 for Service
for Sight. Beta Zeta achieved the highest
GPA on campus for the Spring 2014
semester, continuing to make academics a
priority.
Kappa Sigma:
Early in September we held a Title IX
workshop, in which our chapter participated
in an open dialogue, guided by a university
official, and discussed the Denison's
current culture and how we, as an
organization, can work to make Denison a
safe a respectful community. On
September 24th we initiated a class of 15
sophomore men. On September 29th, we
held a grillout and kickball event with the Pi
Beta Phi sorority at our lodgespace. On
October 4th, our chapter travelled to Hico,
West Virginia to raft down the Lower
Gauley River. We collaborated with the
other IFC fraternities to cohost the first
annual Buzzard Beats concert on October
24th. The event occurred at Lamson Lodge
and was headlined by Tim Gunter. Student
performers opened the event. On
November 8th, we held "Festivus," our
annual semi-formal event, in which
brothers, accompanied by dates, enjoy
food and dance at our lodgespace. On
November 15th, we partnered with the
Delta Chi fraternity to cohost a dodgeball
philanthropy event at the Mitchell Athletic
Center. The event raised a total of $800.
Sigma Lamda Gamma
National Sorority, Inc:
The Upsilon Delta Chapter of Sigma
Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. is
going into its fourth year on Denison’s
campus! We are proud to be part of such a
great community with 13 active members
this semester, 5 of which are seniors. This
semester we had our annual Kickball
Tournament which had a successful
turnout with representation from all
councils along with non-affiliated members
that participated in our fundraising event.
Our Gamma Week next semester will be
February 9th-14th so be on the lookout for
events!
Phi Delta Theta:
The men of Phi Delta Theta have been
busy this semester on campus. In
September, we volunteered with the ladies
of Delta Gamma at the ALS walk in
Columbus. With such a great turnout, we
cleaned and packed away the event in
record time. The ALS Association is Phi
Delta Theta's philanthropic partner across
the US and Canada. In late October the
men of Phi Delta Theta at Denison hosted
the third annual Gus McCravey Memorial
Golf tournament. Over 70 people
participated in the golf event, and even
more were able to donate toward the
scholarship fund, which supports a student
interested in the Arts at Denison. The event
has raised over $3,000! In addition to these
events, the Phi Delts have enjoyed
participating in service and philanthropy
events hosted by other fraternities,
sororities and governing councils at DU,
and look forward to doing even more in the
coming months.
We also look forward to celebrating our
100th anniversary at Denison in April.
