Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust • Bradford Council • Bradford Travel Training Unit • HFT • Project SEARCH • Southfield School Bradford Project SEARCH Update ISSUE 3 FEBRUARY 2014 What is it? Project SEARCH is a partnership between young Bradford leading to gaining skills necessary for Teaching Hospitals, Southfield School, HFT and Bradford Council. The goal is people with learning difficulties employment. to provide three on-site work placements for Project SEARCH Mentor Profile Emma (Catering Assistant, Priestley’s) Emma, who works in Priestley’s restaurant, is proud to be a supportive mentor for our interns. She worked with Kieran in his first rotation and is looking forward to working with Kimberly in her second. We asked Emma what she thought of the Project and how Kieran did in his first job, “Kieran did really well. He was shy at first but really came out of his shell. As well as being more confident in socialising, he became much faster at serving.” Just how popular Kieran is in the department is easy to see when you walk into Priestley’s with him at lunch times; his name is called from every corner of the restaurant with kind greetings in abundance. Kieran, however, has had a bigger impact on Emma’s outlook then she could have imagined, “My cousin recently had a baby with down syndrome and Kieran has been an inspiration to me and my family. We have talked about Kieran and he has shown us that our new baby boy can grow up to have a good life just like Kieran.” Patient Feedback Patient (Ward 3) The Project SEARCH team has been delighted to receive some very positive feedback on one of our interns, from a patient on Ward 3: “To whom it may concern. I feel I must tell you about one of your cleaners. Without doubt she is one of the best I have seen. I think her name is Aneesa. She does a wonderful job”. PAGE 2 Travel Training A parent perspective This year we have seen eight of our interns become travel trained for the first time. This is a huge step towards independence and on the path to gaining employment. Donata is one of those students newly travel trained. Both Donata and her mother Beata felt some trepidation in taking her first steps towards independent traveling. The work of the travel training unit however has helped them both, confidently, overcome any fears they may have had. Beata talked to us about her experience working with the travel training unit, “They have been fantastic. Donata has learned so much with them and she is so proud of that now. I would recommend them to any parent who has a child with learning difficulties. People from travel training are very professional, punctual and they listen to you. I am so glad that Donata has been given the opportunity to be part of the scheme.” Project SEARCH Intern Profile Naima (Dalesway Discharge Lounge) Naima spent her first placement working as a play leader. Now just one week into her second placement in the discharge lounge she is already making an impression. When we spoke to the discharge lounge team they couldn’t be more pleased with her start, “She is very good! She puts herself forward for jobs, is a real grafter and is willing to learn.” In discharge lounge one of Naima’s responsibilities is to keep patients happy, “She is very comfortable talking to the patients, she makes sure they have what they need.” Naima told us that her placement is nice and that it is keeping her very busy, “I am serious about getting a job. I am achieving a lot and its nice to feel like I am making a difference.” Bradford Project SEARCH contacts Tutor: Job Coach: Business Liaison: Ali Sholi (Southfield School) Tel: 01274 383867 Vikki Ellis (HFT) Tel: 01274 383867 / 07833245519 Lorraine Cameron (BTHFT) Tel: 01274 382428
