GDS – global destination for shoes & accessories
30 July to 1 August 2014
PRESS RELEASE
Supporting Programme for GDS boasts many Highlights
Accomplished Mix of Information, Glamour and Inspiration
When GDS debuts in its new format as the “Global Destination
for Shoes & Accessories” from 30 July to 1 August 2014 trade
visitors will be in for many exciting events. The line-up is not only
fun – but also a rich source of information and inspiration –
exactly what’s needed for a successful start to the new season.
The third day of the trade show will see the shoes and
accessories festival take off under the heading OUT OF THE
BOX. Awaiting consumers with a flair for footwear and an interest
in fashion will be many specials, events and lots of entertainment
at Düsseldorf’s stores and on its streets – from 3.00 pm to 10.00
pm on 1 August 2014.
First in line is the grand GDS Opening Party for invited guests on
the eve of GDS. At Düsseldorf’s “Schwanenhöfen” venue guest
star gospel singer Beth Ditto will get the sector into the right
mood for a successful trade show start. Industry insiders, media
representatives and other VIP guests can look forward to an
extraordinarily glamorous evening. In keeping with the theme the
exhibition “Dancing Shoes” by artist Gerrit Starczewski will also
open.
Another highlight presenting shoes in an artistic context is the
joint exhibition entitled “ART SHOES – Shoes in Contemporary
Art” at Düsseldorf art gallery Petra Nostheide-Eycke. As a
contribution to the festival of shoes and accessories, gallery

owner Nostheide-Eycke has invited twelve artists to work on the
shoe theme. The international origin of the creative minds
involved in the exhibition from Holland, England, Germany and
Romania results in different cultural languages reflected in the
shoe artworks. Be they painted, sculpted or installed: these
artists send their own message in, and with, shoes as
protagonists. The ART SHOES exhibition will be presented for
the first time at the premises of the Düsseldorf Gallery from 30
July to 27 September 2014 and opens on 29 July, one day ahead
of the official opening of GDS. The exhibition is supported by
GDS and the German Shoe Institute in Offenbach.
But there is also plenty to discover and experience at the
fairgrounds proper. Forming the basis of this are the three
themed
worlds
STUDIO,
HIGHSTREET
and
POP
UP.
HIGHSTREET and STUDIO house one catwalk each for the
fashion shows staged by individual exhibitors and associations
such as Birkenstock, ara, Highline United, Klauser or “Shoes of
Spain”. In addition, the STUDIO Show "Belles Rebelles" is
featured with selected premium labels once a day.
At the end of the second day of the trade show there will be some
time for partying again: “Chill & Grill” is the motto for the big GDS
Party organised for all exhibitors and visitors at the Hippie
Mercado between Halls 1 and 4.
The “Hippie Mercado” brings back memories of a traditional
market on the island of Ibiza in the 70s and 80s. Mastermind Eddi
Mackowiak has organised a unique flea and vintage market with
belts, foulards, bags, headgear, jewellery, shoes, furniture and
vintage garments, to name but a few exhibits on display. In the
centre of the Mercado there will also be a beach bar serving
delicious tapas, paella and cocktails.

The other GDS worlds also house lounges serving dainty tit bits
and beverages in line with the ambience. At the POP UP Lounge
the brief reads “SAVE FOOD” – the cooperation between the
World Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations
(FAO) and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH as well as United Nations
Environmental Programme (UNEP) seeks to fight food losses
and waste. And Oliver Scholz of Cateringart has also designed all
the menus offered to trade show guests at this Lounge in line
with this theme.
A festive spirit will prevail at not one but two award-giving
ceremonies. The first evening of the trade show will see the
schuhkurier & step Awards being presented at the K21 Museum
in Düsseldorf city centre. These renowned industry awards are
designed to honour the enterprises and outstanding personalities
of the year. GDS acts as the gold sponsor here.
On the second day of the trade show APICCAPS will present the
Portuguese Innovation Awards to young design talents from
Portugal at GDS.
Nothing less than insider knowledge is provided by the lectures at
GDS. With the TW magazine’s Trend Info for S/S 2015 and the
Modeurop Fashion Forecast visitors can look forward to not one
but two exciting talks on the trend forecast theme. On the second
and third day of the trade show the Sternefeld publishing house
will organise a lecture/panel discussion and interview series on
the theme “Shop Window Staging and Visual Merchandising:
Higher Footfall in Retail – Proper Staging with Easy Means?” in
the lounge provided by schuhkurier and step.

The trade show Friday is all about fashion bloggers. The Fashion
Blogger Cafe “Shoedition” will open its doors for them in Hall 4.
This is also where the Blogger Fashion Show powered by
STYLERANKING will be held, among other things. For a runway
show specifically designed for the trade show, fashion bloggers
will dress models in highlights from selected collections.
In the exhibition halls of GDS the Highlight Route provides an
overview of all key themes at GDS. Running through all three
worlds at GDS like a red carpet it showcases a special selection
of HIGHSTREET, POP UP and STUDIO. Extraordinary product
stagings, trend installations, original show interventions, catwalk
shows and unusual events invite visitors to walk around the show
and immerse themselves in different worlds of experience.
