Will Chanakya's manipulative mechanisms change the face of the nation again? CHANAKYA’S CHANT: by Ashwin Sanghi RATING: * * ½ Chanakya’s Chant is the story of Chanakya, one of the greatest political strategists India has seen. The story changes track as it narrates the tale of Gangasagar Mishra, the reincarnation of Chanakya, in parallel. Will he be the next kingmaker? The first story is set in 340 BC, when a young Brahmin man, fuelled by the death of his father, vows revenge against the king and overthrows his rule by bringing in Chandragupta Maurya, the first emperor of the Maurya Dynasty. The scene then shifts to modern day India, where Gangasagar Mishra leads his life as a nonentity, until he decides to groom an ambitious Movie Review BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG Moreover, the modern story of Gangasagar Mishra seems to be a blow-by-blow account of some Bollywood masala flick! If possible, read only for the true story of the greatest Indian kingmaker. 1960 Olympics, the slaughtering of the young Milkha’s family, and the final Indo-Pak event! The movie is good, but Farhan Akhtar as Milkha CAST: Farhan Akhtar, Pawan Malhotra, Yograj Singh is brilliant! He acts, he runs, he dances, he Singh, Divya Dutta, Sonam Kapoor, Prakash cries, he does everything in these 3 hours and Raj. he does it to perfection. Sonam Kapoor has nothing more than a special appearance, but RATING: * * * * honestly, you won’t miss her. For this is solely a ‘The Flying Sikh’ said the others. His was the Farhan Akhtar movie! story that was made for the big screen. And finally, Milkha Singh gets his due. If there was ever a story that had every flavor of life, it was Milkha Singh’s. From being a freespirited notorious kid to being an army officer, and then of the best athletes ever, Milkha faced it all. It is never easy for a director to portray a life so large on the big screen, and that too in a few hours, especially when sitting in a movie hall for straight 3 hours is considered unacceptable. A few scenes deserve a special mention. Farhan’s training before the Monsoon gadgets With the rains finally arriving, we would like our gadgets to be weatherproof to a fairly large extent, as we know how horrendous the Indian monsoons can get. We may have the best technology available in the market, but with a single shower, our favourite gadget’s fate may be sealed, leaving them redundant. So, here are some of DNA Digitals gadget picks that can brave the monsoon. Corsair Flash Voyager 3.0 Some of us would like to keep our important data on hand all the time and we would mostly carry it on a USB flash drive as it offers convenience and portability. However, rains can play havoc and destroy the drive leaving it useless in the process. Corsair has introduced the Flash Voyager 3.0, a rugged flash drive that is shock-proof as well as waterproof, thus ensuring your data is safe no matter the weather conditions. This drive features a USB 3.0 interface as well for speedy data transfers. Price: Rs1, 599 Sennheiser Pmx 680 Sports Adidas and Sennheiser have come out with an ideal solution for the monsoons by introducing the PMX 680 Sports Performance headphones. These in-ear buds stay protected, no matter how heavy the rain may be. These headphones can fit all head types and not only are they lightweight and sturdy, they also remain secure in your ears. Price: Rs2,990 You know, umbrellas have probably been around for over one hundred years, and in all that time, they have not changed all that much. As the Nubrella slogan says: “You’ve Waited Long Enough! Someone has finally changed the design”. Best of all, they added hands free. It isn’t hard to open and close the umbrella either. Granted, the design is a trifle odd. I mean, look at the people wearing this thing? It’s like an oversized space helmet, or something. Weird as it is, it can withstand 50mph winds and rip-stop waterproof nylon. It’s definitely the first one that I’ve seen that can be properly carried on a bicycle, and better than those goofy ones that you can wear on your head like a hat. There is no word from any source when this will be available nor any hint of a price. The right to food is finally becoming a lively political issue in India. Aware of the forthcoming general elections, parties are competing to demonstrate – or at least proclaim — their commitment to food security. In a country where endemic under nutrition has been accepted for too long as natural, this is a breakthrough of sorts. very disruptive. Some of the criticisms of the Bill are a trifle ill-informed. Many critics cite wildly exaggerated estimates of the costs of the Bill and barely consider the economic benefits. Others cite a Planning Commission report that found more than half of distributed food grain ends up in the black market. That particular report was published in 2005 and is based on data collected in the late 1990s. Much has changed in the The food security Bill is a modest initiative. It consolidates various food-related programmes and entitle- meantime. ments that have made gradual headway over the last A more pertinent criticism is that cash transfers would decade. Provisions dealing with food grain entitlements serve much the same purpose at lower cost. In some under the public distribution system (PDS) have circumstances, cash transfers are certainly appropriate. grabbed most of the attention. Children’s entitlements, However, there are many good reasons to be sceptical however, are possibly more important. These include of a hasty transition to cash transfers. The infrastruccooked midday meals for all school-going children and ture required would take a long time to build. The PDS, nutritious food (either a cooked meal or a take-home on the other hand, is in place, and huge food grain ration) for all children below the age of six, already stocks – more than 80 million tonnes and growing – are mandatory under Supreme Court orders. The Bill also available, so why not make good use of them without provides for maternity benefits – Rs 1,000 per month delay? for six months — for all pregnant women. This is a In any case, the Bill doesn’t preclude a transition to small step, and since the benefits are not indexed to cash transfers if and when they prove to work better inflation, their real value could erode very quickly. than food subsidies — not just in theory but also on the The Bill is effectively what remains of bolder proposals initially discussed at the National Advisory Council (NAC). The NAC’s early drafts of the Bill included many provisions that were quietly dropped, one by one, first by the NAC itself and later by the government: social security pensions, special entitlements for vulnerable groups, community kitchens and strong accountability measures, among others. However, the Bill has many flaws as far as the PDS is concerned. For instance, the identification of eligible households is left to the discretion of the government. In the absence of clear eligibility criteria, no one is really entitled to anything as a matter of right; this defeats the law’s purpose. Similarly, the overnight imposition of per-capita food entitlements on a system that is currently based on household entitlements is likely to be ground. The immediate issue is not “cash versus food,” but to put in place an effective system of income support and social security. Leaving poor people to their own devices is neither socially just nor smart economic policy. The biggest challenge is to build serious political backing for food security, as has already happened to a limited extent in specific states. Under the cover of supporting the Bill, Opposition parties seem to be trying to scuttle it, out of fear that it will help the United Progressive Alliance stay in power in the next national elections. The government’s own commitment to the Bill is not entirely clear. Four years of dilly-dallying are hard to understand without an element of internal resistance. Finally, the Bill is a fraction of what is required to tackle India’s enormous nutrition problems. The battle for the right to food is far from over. Poetry Corner By Mridul Miglani Embrace the Monsoon Its just another useless day lying besides the window pane something breaks my reverie ah! its a drop of early rain So, monsoon has made its mark and that too just on time it revives me with the sweet memories and makes my heartbeats rhyme the birds are having a gala time I wonder where had they been trees are hopping like the kids to the rain's melody and sheen Though I feel like dancing and sense the natural bliss a thought strikes my mind hard yes, I miss my first kiss I know she is far right now still I feel a whole new breeze If only she would have been here we would have talked for hours with ease The clouds have gone ballistic scorching heat has now slept I think even skies have realised the wild secrets that I have kept As monsoon is like water in the drought and silence broken by words so, don't be angry with the rain as it doesn't know how to flow upwards! Yet again, mother nature has unveiled ,it’s most beautiful phase , and indeed it is the most romantic one. Yes my dear guys and gals, I am talking about the MONSOON .. It's time to brace the rains and believe me all of your worries will seem worthless, once you know how to deal with it and that too stylishly... For my dear male readers, here are a few tips for you. I know in this season, how much you want to stick to your denims. Go ahead and find the best fit for yourself and while choosing , don't forget that ripped jeans are a big hit this season. Also pairing these denims with cool t-shirts can actually give you the feel of the season. Opt for earthy colours and not to forget the latest rage "neon colours". Also a good fitted cargo pants with a nice pair of sneakers or slippers can do wonders, only if you choose the right colours (see pic: David Beckham looks so voguish in those cargos.. ) . Be careful , when you go for those loose Tees, as it might stick to your body, although this could actually become attractive if you have that chiselled body, otherwise you are going to regret it!!!
