October 2014 - #2
Emily Carr Elementary School News
Dear Carr Community,
“We may not have it “all together” but together…we have it all”
Thank you for all the support you have given to staff during our
first week back together. Your warm welcome, patience
and encouragement have contributed to staff feeling a continued
appreciation for all that you do to help us do what is best for kids!
It is my privilege to be Carr's new Principal. I mentioned to staff
last week that I sincerely feel that I have landed in the right spot.
This year will be full of opportunities to discuss what works from a
strength-based mind set, to examine what doesn't work from a respectful perspective and to build collaborative and productive relationships to ensure that all of us do together what we know is best
for kids!
Join me in celebrating that our students have thoughtfully been
placed in their new learning environments and that our journey
ahead in 2014/15 will be full of exciting learning adventures.
Lesson: We need to make sure our honking
is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is greater. The
power of encouragement (to stand by one’s
heart or core values and encourage the heart
and core values of others) is the quality of
honking we seek.
Fact #5:
When a goose gets sick or wounded, two
geese drop out of formation and follow it
down to help and protect it. They stay with
their comrade until the goose it is able to fly
again. Then they launch out and they catch up
with their flock.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as
geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.
LESSONS FROM GEESE
Fact #1:
As each goose flaps its wings, it creates “uplift” for
the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, the
whole flock adds 71 % greater flying range than if each bird
flew alone.
Lesson: People who share a common vision and sense of purpose can get where they are going quicker and easier because
they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
Important Dates to Note:
Oct. 10 Individual Student Photos
Oct. 10
Terry Fox Run 1:15 pm
Oct. 10
Family Photo Night 5:00—8:00 pm
Oct. 13
Fact #2:
Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the
drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back
into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird
immediately in front.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will join in
formation with those who are headed where we want to go. We
are willing to accept their help, and give ours to others.
Thanksgiving Holiday—School Closed
Oct. 16 Welcome Back BBQ 5:00—7:30 pm
Note Goal Setting Conferences changed to:
Oct 22,Oct 23 - early dismissal 2:00 pm
Oct 24 Pro D—no school for students
Oct 31 Dress Up Day & Cake Walk
Fact #3:
When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the
formation and another goose flies at the point position.
Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing
leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each
other’s skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts,
talents, or resources.
Fact #4:
Geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up
front to keep up their speed.

Emily Carr is an allergy aware school. Some of our students and staff at Emily Carr have severe life-threatening
allergies. One example is nut and nut products.
Parents please do NOT send nuts or nut products in
lunches and snacks.
As we cannot guarantee to be a nut free school, we ask that students never share food. For parents of a child with a severe allergy please ensure your child knows not to eat food from other
students.

Class Composition Placement Process:
*Thank you to Staff for the enormous amount of hours, thoughtfulness and energy that went into class
placement last week. Thank you to parents for your patience and support.
Highlighted below are only some of the educational factors staff consider when placing students to establish
educational learning environments:
*individual student strengths and struggles; collective class composition student strengths and struggles;
designated students requiring intensive, moderate or low level Resource and Student and Support Worker
support; undesignated students requiring intensive, moderate or low level Resource and Student and Support Worker(SSSW) support; male and female ratio (schools can't control how many males and females are
registered); social dynamics; Resource teachers' workload and staffing; SSSW workload and staffing and;
Class Size maximums...
Parent requests are valued, reviewed and listened to in the process of all the above factors. We understand that a few parents or students may not be 'happy' at first, but teachers, with mutual trust and
collaboration with parents, will make your child's year a positive and productive one.
When Your Child Arrives Late:
When your child is consistently late:
*instructional learning time is lost and can't be made up (impacts student success)
*instructional learning time is disrupted for other students and the teacher as they take a
'pause' moment to see who is entering the class (impacts the class' learning and instruction)
*he/she feels embarrassed (impacts social, emotional, academic learning)
*a 'reputation' can start with other kids that "he/she is always late" (impacts social,
emotional, academic learning)
Please have your child arrive on time so that we can give your child our best with every moment
we have with them! Thank you.

ELCOME
We have more new staff members…..
While we are sad to say goodbye to Helen Ritchie and Asheida Arruda, both have
accepted new positions. We are, however, thrilled to welcome Carol Zrymiak as Area
Counsellor and Holly Gow and Charlie Robinson as Staff and Student Support workers.
Carol will be at Emily Carr on Tuesday mornings, first and third Wednesdays of the month, and Fridays.
COYOTES IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
There have been coyotes in the Douglas Park area this week. The most effective method of reducing potential conflicts between
coyotes and children is preparation.
Coyotes are well adapted to urban environments and have made Vancouver their home since they first arrived in the 1980’s.
Now they are a permanent fixture in the urban landscape, and can often be seen in parks, school grounds, golf courses and
neighbourhoods of Vancouver. They are naturally afraid of people but they learn to be comfortable when they are not treated
like wildlife, and can become aggressive.
With three simple actions, you can help reduce conflicts between people, pets and coyotes.

Be Big, Brave, and Loud – if you see a coyote scare it, it is the most effective way to keep people, pets and coyotes safe

Never Feed – human food is not healthy for coyotes but like any dog, they will eat what you give to them.
Deliberate feeding is the sole cause of aggressive behaviour which is why it is illegal under the provincial wildlife
act to attract coyotes, if you see someone feeding a coyote please report it.

Spread the Word – tell your neighbours about co-existing, and report your coyote sightings
To report seeing a coyote you can call the Coyote Hotline at 604-681-9453
Report aggressive coyotes to the Ministry of Environment at 1-800-663-9453

Vision 2014-15:
Student Valuables at school
ALL children CAN learn and ALL children WILL be successful.
Parents are reminded that there is no VSB
insurance coverage for student belongings.
Students who bring Ipods, cell phones and
other devices do so at their own risk. Staff
have decided that these items are to be
kept turned off or on silent and in back
packs during the school day unless being
used under supervision for lessons. Thank
you in advance for your support.
School Goals:

To improve writing skills for all students, with a particular focus on
moving forward students who are identified as not meeting, approaching or minimally meeting grade level expectations as measured on the
BC Writing Performance Standards and Report Card Marks.

To increase knowledge, acceptance, empathy, awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal histories, traditions, cultures and contributions
among all students.
