HCC receives grant from Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council for iPad Project Halifax Community College recently received a $4,000 grant from the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council. Together, the organizations have developed a program to encourage students to receive Career Readiness Certificates (CRC). With the grant funds, HCC has purchased seven iPads, which will be loaded with CRC software and will help students prepare for the test. The project will enhance the instructional capabilities of the CRC lab and will be used as a demonstration project. The CRC is a portable credential that promotes career development and skill attainment for individuals and confirms to employers that an individual possesses basic workplace skills in applied math, locating information and reading. HCC Advancement/Foundation NewsletterFall 2014 HCC Foundation to Host Fourth Annual Golf Tournament to Benefit Students On Thursday, Sept. 25, HCC Foundation Inc. will host the fourth HCC Foundation Inc. Annual Golf Tournament at Chockoyotte Country Club in Weldon. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m. and tee-off with a scramble format start begins at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds will provide assistance for student scholarships, activities and expenses. There will be a $25,000 hole-in-one prize as well as prizes for first, second and third place finishers. The registration fee is $50 per golfer or $200 for a golf foursome. The tournament is open to the general public. HCC Awarded Grant from Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust HCC is pleased to announce that it has received a $150,000 grant to construct the Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail (RV FIT) from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The project will improve the lives of local residents by providing a 1/6 mile oval-shaped trail with three fitness areas, featuring multigenerational equipment. Solar lights will provide lighting for the community to work out during evening hours. There will be no charge to take advantage of the RV FIT, which is slated to open this fall. The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust was established in 1947 and is now one of the largest private trusts in North Carolina. Its mission is to improve the quality of life and quality of health for the financially needy of North Carolina. The Health Care Division promotes wellness state-wide by investing in prevention and treatment. The Poor and Needy Division of the Trust responds to basic life needs and invests in solutions that improve the quality of life and health for financially needy residents of Forsyth County. The grant will provide upgrades in the College’s industrial training program, enabling HCC to upgrade its equipment to industry standards and provide for additional third-party credentials. The upgrades will focus on the areas of maintenance, machining, welding and fabrication. Attendees heard from HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. and received an update on the College. Chester Williams, an HCC alumnus, talked about his experience at the College. “At HCC, doors opened for me, the possibilities were endless,” he said. “As I left HCC, I was proud to say that I was an alumnus… To see the growth on campus, I’m even more proud.” HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. addressed the audience at the second annual Alumni & Friends Presidential Breakfast on May 17 at the College. The event was a fundraiser for the HCC Foundation Inc. and its operations, and was sponsored by Halifax County Missionary Union, PNC Bank, WEZU 95.9FM “Local Public Radio,” Senator Angela Bryant, H.D. There are numerous and convenient ways to contribute to the Foundation.
