As we heard last night, Tony made such an impact on his trainer, teammates, and
Healthy Charleston Challenge participants past and present. He was such a
loveable, caring, totally authentic person, and was such an inspiration and touched
so many lives.
We honor his legacy by recognizing participants who exhibit Tony's characteristics.
Tony Page Award Criteria:
Trainers and Dietetic Interns nominate one male and one female from their team
who:
Was the most engaged and had the most consistent attendance to group
workouts
Had the greatest positive influence on the team
Contributed the most to group dynamics
Made the most important changes in healthy nutrition based on their initial
problem areas. Focused on long term sustainability.
Overall the person who really "gets it" and was bought into HCC as it is
intended: to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes that go beyond the 10 week
program
This award is not about doing the program perfectly, but more about making weekly
adjustments and keeping focused on their priority of improved health. Also about
overcoming adversity and having a positive influence on others.

Lorcan Lucey has an inspiring story. As part of running club with Katie Blaylock as trainer, Lorcan is an avid
runner and health conscious individual. However, in May of 2007 Lorcan went on a recovery run of 4 miles and
felt sharp pains in his thighs which continually got worse over a few days. When the pain was too much, he
went to East Cooper Hospital where he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Although this was an obstacle
for Lorcan, he started treatment efforts and continued to exercise through this disease. However, after a few
months, MUSC (where his medical information had also been sent) found shadow on one of his lungs which
turned out to be a lung disease related to arthritis, interstitial lung diseases. This manifestation of rheumatoid
arthritis, is described as a group of disorders, that causes progressive scarring of lung tissue which can
eventually affects your ability to breathe and reduces oxygen that is transported into your bloodstream.
Starting with strong steroids and low chemotherapy, Lorcan began his long fight against this both diseases. He
noticed changes immediately that getting oxygen to his lungs was much harder; however he started PFT's
(breathing treatment) and although the medicine was not a sure thing, he continued spinning, exercising,
traveling, and hiking.
In 2010, Lorcan was forced to face a lung transplant with only 50% lung capacity and was told he had 4 years
to live. Placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant, he started loving life, enjoying exercise, and even
traveled to Mexico in 2011. In 2012, an ambulance had to be called for Lorcan as the disease took a turn for the
worst. He went MUSC for transplant because he trusted and respected the hospital and doctors and nurses
that worked in the facility. The night before the transplant, Lorcan believed it to be his last night on earth and
was ready for his next journey. He awoke the next day with a successful lung transplant from an organ donor.
Lorcan, with his dedication and love for exercise and life, was playing tennis and hiking only 90 days after his
surgery. He is now an advocate for being an organ donor and is an amazing example of the benefits from
having a healthy body and mind and the major influence it can have during sickness and recovery.
