New is news
day after a delegation from Egypt praised ‘Amma
Canteens’ and expressed desire to replicate it
in their country, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today
ordered setting up of 360 more such canteens across
Tamilnadu and announced that these would start
functioning soon.
‘I have ordered 360 new Amma Canteens to ensure that the utility of Amma Unavagam (canteen), a
bedrock of support for the poor, should reach people
in other urban centres as well,’ Jayalalithaa said in
a statement.
The popular canteens were launched by Jayalalithaa
last year to provide quality food at subsidised price to
the people, especially the poor.
Chennai’s 200 wards already have one Amma canteen each. Now each ward will get one more canteen.
Similarly, 27 canteens will be set up in the premises
of government general hospitals in district headquarters except towns which already have Amma
canteens.
Meanwhile, the Tamilnadu Assembly will meet on 10
July. AMP Jamaludeen, Secretary of the Assembly,
announced this in an official release today.
The schedule for the upcoming session is likely
to be announced on the opening day of the House,

rollback of
diesel price hike
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 1:
Tamilnadu Chief Minister
J Jayalalithaa today urged
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi to step in and reverse
the diesel price hike.
In a press release here, the
Chief Minister said, ‘the decision to raise diesel prices
by 50 paise per litre by oil
manufacturing companies is
disappointing’.
There is a danger of increase in fares levied by
private autos, taxis and lorries. Students, office-goers,
tourists and poor people will
be greatly affected, she said.
This will result in an increase in the prices of vegetables, fruits and other
essential items. The people
will be put to hardship, she
added.
Jayalalithaa urged the new
government at the Centre not
to follow the policies of the
previous UPA government
, which has resulted in the
sky-rocketing of the prices
of fuel.
The government at the Centre should not allow Oil
Manufacturing Companies
(OMCs) to decide on fuel
prices.
The hike in price of diesel
has disappointed people who
expected to see a change
with the change of guard at
the Centre, she added.
Reminding the NDA government of its polls promise to
control inflation, she urged
the Prime Minister to step
in and rollback the diesel
price hike.

India seeks Interpol help to
extradite Lankan ultra
New Delhi, June 1 (PTI):
The extradition process of a Sri Lankan national, arrested in Malaysia for alleged conspiracy
to carry out terror strikes on the US and Israeli
consulates in South India, has begun with India
approaching Interpol for
issuing an Red Corner notice against the accused.
Mohammad Hossaini, who was arrested by
Malaysian police in Kepong near Kuala Lumpur
a fortnight ago, is wanted in India for allegedly
hatching a conspiracy for carrying out strikes on
the US Consulate in Chennai and Israeli Consulate in Bangalore.
Tamilnadu Police had secured a non-bailable
arrest warrant against Hossaini which was sent
through diplomatic channels to France-based
Interpol headquarters for issuance of Red Corner
Notice, official sources said.
In the meantime, a provisional request has
been sent to Malaysia for sharing the interrogation report of Hossaini so that other leads in the
probe could be followed.
According to the sources, Hossaini told the
Malaysian police that he had received instructions to assist two men in the attacks on the US
and Israeli consulates in Chennai and Bangalore.
Malaysia had tipped Intelligence Bureau about
an alleged conspiracy being hatched from Sri
Lanka about carrying an attack on US and Israeli
consulates in Chennai and Bangalore in which
a Lankan national Sakir Hussain was identified.
The leads in the case surfaced when Malaysian
authorities were probing money laundering and
human trafficking cases. Hussain was alleged to
be talking to ISI officers and allegedly planning
to carry out terror strikes on the two consulates.
The arrests by the Malaysian authorities was
a follow up of nabbing of Hussain and his subsequent interrogation which was shared with
agencies in Kuala Lumpur and Colombo.
Hussain told his interrogators that he had been
hired allegedly by an official in Pakistani High
Commission in Colombo to conduct reconnaissance of US Consulate in Chennai and Israeli
Consulate in Bangalore.
Hussain, who was arrested on April 29 in a
coordinated operation involving various countries
including Malaysia and Sri Lanka, reportedly told
the interrogators that the Pakistan’s spy agency
ISI was planning to send two men from Maldives
to Chennai and that he had to arrange for their
travel documents and hideouts in Chennai and
Bangalore. Hussain travelled from Colombo to
India and was arrested after prolonged monitoring by the central security agencies. His sustained interrogation unravelled an alleged plan
by the ISI to carry out terror strike on the two
consulates and also named an official at the
Pakistan High Commission based in Colombo
as his handler.
The reason for ISI for picking up, according to
Hussain, was that he was engaged in human
trafficking, making of forged passports and smuggling of fake Indian currency.
Pictures of US and Israeli consulates showing various gates and roads leading to the two
premises were recovered from his laptop, the
sources said and claimed that these pictures had
been mailed to his alleged handlers in Pakistan
and its High Commission in Colombo.
Cyber signatures showed that the pictures were
downloaded at a computer within the premises of
Pakistan High Commission at Colombo and the
same had been shared with Sri Lankan authorities, the sources claimed.
Hussain had allegedly sent sketches of the
roads leading to the two consulates in Portable
Document Format (PDF) to his handlers, the
sources said.
New Delhi, June 1 (PTI):

attended by SIT Vice-Chairman
Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat and top

on combating the menace of black
money and the status of ongoing
probes and available inputs with all
the departments in this regard.
All the participating departments

TN fishermen attacked
by Sri Lankan navy
Rameswaram, June 1:
Sri Lankan Navy, who on Saturday
surprised Indian fishermen trawling
near Katchatheevu by offering them
soft drinks and sweets, attacked
eight fishermen in the Indian territory off Dhamushkodi coast early
on Sunday, Fiseries Department
sources said.
Four fishermen suffered severe injuries on the head, hand and shoulder while others sustained internal
injuries. All of them were admitted
to hospital, the sources said.
Two boats and 10 fishing nets
were damaged in the attack with
bottles, stones and sticks. The Navy
personnel also took away the fishermen’s catch, the sources said.
I dont think our fishermen were at
fault today. They have been hit with
bottles, stones and sticks in the sea
off Dhanushkodi coast. They made
futile attempts to contact the Indian
Coast Guard personnel,’ local fishermen’s association President Emiret
told reporters.
He said the fishermen had enough
evidence to prove that they were fishing in Indian waters.

MARILYN MONROE
M
arilyn Monroe was an American actress, model,
and singer, who became a major sex symbol,
starring in a number of commercially successful motion
pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s.
After spending much of her childhood in foster homes,
Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a lm
contract in 1946 with Twentieth Century-Fox. Her early
lm appearances were minor, but her performances in
The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) drew
attention. By 1952 she had her rst leading role in Don’t
Bother to Knock[6] and 1953 brought a lead in Niagara,
a melodramatic lm noir that dwelt on her seductiveness.
Her dumb blonde persona was used to comic effect
in subsequent lms such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
(1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The
Seven Year Itch (1955). Limited by typecasting, Monroe
studied at the Actors Studio to broaden her range. Her
dramatic performance in Bus Stop (1956) was hailed
by critics and garnered a Golden Globe nomination.
Her production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions,
released The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), for which
she received a BAFTA Award nomination and won a
David di Donatello award. She received a Golden Globe
Award for her performance in Some Like It Hot (1959).
Monroe’s last completed lm was The Mists (1961),
co-starring Clark Gable, with a screenplay written by
her then-husband, Arthur Miller.
The nal years of Monroe’s life were marked by illness,
personal problems, and a reputation for unreliability and
being difcult to work with.

Dallery to return portrait
lost under Nazis
A
n Australian gallery will return a
portrait once thought the work of
Vincent Van Gogh to its rightful owners in
what is believed to be the country’s rst
restitution of art lost under the Nazis.
The National Gallery
of Victoria (NGV) said it
accepted that ‘Head of a
man’ was part of a forced
sale by German Jew
Richard Semmel in 1933
and should be returned
to his heirs.
As far as we are aware,
this is the rst case of
its kind in Australia, the
gallery said in a statement posted on its
website this week.
The NGV takes its responsibilities seriously
in regard to determining the history of
ownership of works of art, including the
period from 1933 to 1945 when systematic
looting, the conscation of artworks, and
persecutory anti-Semitic policies occurred
under Nazi rule, it added. In deciding the
claim, the gallery said it looked to decisions
by the Dutch Restitutions Committee which
adjudicates claims about Nazi-conscated
art.
It had already looked at ve claims
relating to Semmel’s
collection which he sold
in the Netherlands to
nance his ight from the
Nazis. In all ve cases,
the committee accepted
that Richard Semmel’s
auction
sales in
1933 were
the result
of nancial pressures caused
by the anti-Semitic policies
of the National Socialist
government, the gallery said.
When the Melbourne gallery
purchased the painting in 1940, it had
already changed hands several times since
the auction and was considered to be by
Van Gogh. In 2006, its attribution came
under scrutiny by international scholars
and a later investigation by the Van Gogh
Museum in Amsterdam concluded that the
work was not by the famous artist but likely
painted by one working at the same time as
Van Gogh. The NGV did not consider the
work’s attribution to be relevant in coming
to a decision regarding the restitution of the
work, the gallery said.
We also see this as a moral issue, on
which it is important to take a strong
position, it said.
The NGV has been the
custodian of ‘Head of a
man’ for over 70 years. It
is now appropriate to play
an active role in this next
phase of the work’s history
by restituting the work to its
rightful owners.
The gallery is awaiting a response from
the heirs, who are understood to be living
in South Africa.
igh school grade point average
(GPA) is a strong predictor of future
earnings, a new study has found.
A team of researchers led by Michael T
French, professor of health economics at
the University of Miami (UM), found that
a one-point increase
in high school GPA
raises annual earnings
in adulthood by around
12 per cent for men and
14 per cent for women.
Conventional wisdom
is that academic
performance in high
school is important for
college admission, but this is the rst study
to clearly demonstrate the
link between high school
GPA and labour market
earnings many years
later, said French, director of the Health
Economics Research Group (HERG) in the
Department of Sociology at the UM College
of Arts and Sciences, and corresponding
author of the study.
The data indicated that overall high school
GPA is signicantly higher among women,
but men have signicantly higher annual
earnings. For this reason, the researchers
analysed men and women separately. Even
so, the study found that a one-point increase
in GPA doubles the probability of completing
college - from 21 per cent to 42 per cent - for
both genders.
The results also show that if GPA and other
measures of performance are excluded
from the analysis model, it gives the
impression that African-American men
achieve lower educational levels than their
white counterparts.
But, when these
predictors are part of the
analyses, it demonstrates
that African-American
men and women attain
higher educational levels
than white students with
the same high school
GPA and background
characteristics.
The
results suggest that
African-Americans with
poor high school GPAs are
less likely to graduate from
high school and attend
college, but once GPA and
other factors are included
in the models, they are actually more likely
than other races to graduate from college
and continue to graduate
school, French said.
One possible explanation for this nding is
that African-Americans with relatively high
GPAs are more motivated and determined
than whites to attend college and obtain an
advanced degree, French added.
The study used multiple waves of data
from the National Longitudinal Survey of
Adolescent Health.

DOWN THE WEEKLY LANE
The UN Security Council is urging that Lebanon hold its
presidential election as soon as possible.
A statement issued by the council expresses disappointment that the election didn’t take place on time, and
it calls on Parliament to uphold Lebanon’s longstanding
democratic tradition and make sure the election occurs
without external interference.
Lebanon’s last President, Michel Suleiman, completed
his six-year term on Sunday without a replacement, plunging the country into a political vacuum.
The Lebanese are deeply split over the civil war in
neighboring Syria and have lined up behind opposing
sides. Those deep divisions are one reason for the lack
of agreement on a presidential candidate, whom must be
decided on consensually.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Lebanon’s leaders to select a president without delay.

‘FBI spied on Mandela’
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) spied on Nelson Mandela
during his historic visit to the US after
his release from prison in 1990, a
leading British daily reported Friday
citing newly released files.
When the South African leader
arrived in the US, his party - the
African National Congress - was still
designated as a terrorist organisation by the US government, The Independent reported,
adding that the agency already had tabs on Mandela’s
movements from an informant close to his entourage. The
partially redacted files, obtained by Ryan Shapiro from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and shared with
Al Jazeera, contain 334 pages of FBI records from June
1990. Shapiro is involved in an ongoing legal battle with
the National Security Agency, CIA and Defence Intelligence Agency for records on Mandela. Not only did the
FBI heavily redact and withhold documents, but there’s
virtually no discussion of US intelligence community involvement prior to Mandela’s 1990 release from prison,
Shapiro said.

school curriculum’, he said.
Noting that India has a rich history of several stalwarts
who made India what it is today, Modi said, ‘Young minds
should read about these greats & emulate them’.
He was commenting on the moves by the Anandiben Patel government in Gujarat and the Shivraj Singh Chouhan
government in Madhya Pradesh to include his life story
in school syllabus.
Judge me by my work,
says Smriti
Jaya to meet Modi 3 June
Breaking her silence over her educational qualification controversy,
HRD Minister Smriti Irani said extraneous circumstances were created
to deviate her attention from work
and asked the people to judge her
by her work.
Irani reacted two days after the
Congress launched a broadside against her, questioning
her ability to deliver as HRD minister as she was “not
even a graduate.
The 38-year-old television actor-turned politician told
reporters that, Extraneous circumstances have been
created to ensure that my attention is deviated from the
body of work I have been entrusted with.
Irani said that she has been judged by her organisation with regard to her capacity to deliver on assignments.
I will humbly request all of you that judge be my work
and I will not add anything to the statement that I have
made, the Minister said.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will meet Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 3 June and submit a
memorandum on issues concerning the State. This is
the first meeting between Jayalalithaa and Modi after
the latter became Prime Minister of India.
An official release said, Jayalalithaa will visit New Delhi
on 3 June and call on Modi in his office in South Block.
‘This memorandum will include some crucial issues
relating to Tamilnadu which have been pending with the
government of India,’ the release said, in an apparent
reference to Jayalalithaa’s earlier demand for a package
from the Centre.
She had first taken up the matter with former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh in 2011 after winning the Assembly elections and has been pressing for the same
ever since.
A box containing around 50 star tortoises valued at Rs
50 lakh was seized at Chennai Central station by RPF
personnel.
Police said the box was found abandoned at the station.
Members of the security force checked it and found the
live star tortoises inside it.
Police said illegal contraband of star tortoises is banned.
After initial inquiry it was learnt that the star tortoises are
sold between Rs 5000 and 10000 in neighbouring Andhra
Pradesh. At airports, several such attempts to illegally
smuggle star tortoise have been thwarted by security personnel. However, this is the first time that such a seizure
has been made at the railway station.
There will be no power cuts in Tamilnadu from today,
as announced by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa a few
days ago.
According to sources, officials are geared up to ensure
uninterrupted power supply and all arrangements have
Instead of blaming individuals, we
should take collective responsibility for
the drubbing in the recently concluded
Lok Sabha elections, former Union
Minister and senior Congress leader
G K Vasan said.
Speaking to mediapersons at the party’s State headquarters Sathyamurthy Bhavan, Vasan, said, ‘There
was an unprecedented trend all over the nation for a
change of guard at the Centre. Young voters wanted
a new government. The result is the massive defeat
for the Congress. But this is not the end’.
Reeling out the decrease in vote share for the national party all across the nation, Vasan said, ‘Congress
not just fared poorly in Tamilnadu bit also in several
others States. Never in the history we got a total of just
44 seats. It is time for introspection. We will analyse
the reasons and come back stronger’.
Google taking requests
to censor results
Google is starting to accept requests from Europeans who
want to erase unflattering information from the results
produced by the world’s dominant search engine.
The demands can be submitted on a Web page
that Google opened late yesterday in response
to a landmark ruling issued two weeks ago by
Europe’s highest court.
The decision gives Europeans the means to
polish their online reputations by petitioning
Google and other search engines to remove
potentially damaging links to newspaper articles
and other websites with embarrassing information
about their past activities.
Google’s compliance thrusts the company into
the prickly position of having to balance privacy concerns
and the right to be forgotten against the principles of free
expression
and the right to know.
It will also create a divide between how Google generates search results about some
people in Europe and the rest of the
world. For now at least, Google will
only scrub personal information spanning a 32-nation swath in Europe.
That means Googling the same person in the United States and dozens
of other countries could look much
different than it does from Europe.
Although the court ruling only applied to 28 countries in the European Union, Google is extending the right to be forgotten
to four other countries Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. More than 500
million people live in the area affected by Google’s potential purge of personal information from its European search results.
It’s unclear when the whitewashing will begin. So far, Google has only said it will happen soon.
First, though, the Mountain View, California company is trying to establish some
guidelines to steer its censorship decisions.
To do that, Google is setting up a seven-person advisory committee to navigate through
the ethical shoals. The group includes Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and
David Drummond, the company’s chief legal officer, as well as five outsiders.
Infosys’ latest high profile
exit B G Srinivas may join
another IT services firm
as its chief executive offi cer (CEO) and Managing
Director.
Considered among the
top contenders for the first
on-founder CEO post at the
company, Srinivas who is a
Infosys Board member and president, has resigned in
a surprise move. This is the tenth top-level exit from
the Bangalore-based company since the return of cofounder NR Narayana Murthy at the helm of affairs in
June last year. Sources in know of the development told
PTI: ‘Srinivas will join as CEO and Managing Director
(MD) of another listed entity. The announcement to this
effect is likely to announced soon.’
Srinivas, who was Infosys’ highest-paid executive (annual compensation of Rs 7.52 crore in 2013-14 fiscal),
led key portfolios like financial services, manufacturing
and public services. His resignation will be effective
10 June.
Srinivas was considered to be among the top contenders for the job of CEO when S D Shibulal retires on 9
January, 2015.

for domestic and industrial customers from 1 June was
made after the power situation in the State started to look

New power projects have started generating electricity,
providing the State with sufficient energy. Also, the Chief
Minister has asked officials to make maximum utilisation

Early exit for
William sisters
There was no matchup of the Williams sisters at the French Open.
Serena and Venus Williams could
have met in the third round at
Roland Garros, but, surprisingly,
neither made it out of round two on
Wednesday.
After Venus was eliminated by
Slovakia’s Anna Schmiedlova
in three sets on Court Chatrier
to start the second round, the
top-seeded Serena was stunned by Spain’s Garbine
Muguruza.
Schmiedlova, in her second French Open and fifth
Grand Slam event, pulled off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over
the 29th-seeded Venus for her first-ever win against a
top-30 opponent.
The shocker then came about an hour later on Court
Lenglen, as the 20-year- old Muguruza took full advantage
of an uncharacteristically sloppy Serena in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. Muguruza’s best result in five previous Grand Slam
events was a fourth-round loss to Agnieszka Radwanska
at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Exposure to light while
sleeping can make you fat
Women who are exposed to greater levels of light while
sleeping are more likely to gain weight, a new study has
claimed.
Scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research, London,
found that body mass index, waist-hip ratio, waist-height
ratio and waist circumference all increased with increasing
exposure to light at night.
These associations were still
seen after adjustments were
made for confounding factors
that could be associated with
light exposure levels and weight in the study participants,
such as physical activity, having young children and sleep
duration.
The findings come from cross-sectional analyses of data
from the Breakthrough Generations Study, the largest study
of its kind, following more than 113,000 women from across
the UK for 40 years in a bid to find the root causes of breast
cancer.
Metabolism is affected by cyclical rhythms within the body
that relate to sleeping, waking and light exposure, said Anthony Swerdlow, Professor of Epidemiology at The Institute of
Cancer Research, and co-leader
of the study.
The associations we saw in our
study between light exposure at
night and obesity are very intriguing. We cannot yet tell at this
stage what the reason for the associations is, but the results
open up an interesting direction for research, Swerdlow said.
The findings were published in the American Journal of
Epidemiology.

‘Abolishing GoMs, a step
towards good governance’
Bad loans, a cause
of concern: RBI
New Delhi, June 1 (PTI):
Reserve Bank Deputy Governor R Gandhi expressed concern
over bad loans and said banks should strengthen their internal
credit appraisal systems to minimise the risk of default.
The final (NPA) figure for March 2014 is yet to be known; while
some may view this ratio as reasonable, given the economic conditions prevalent in the country and elsewhere, the total stressed
assets in the banking system (including restructured standard
assets) as at December 2013 was 10.13 per cent of the gross advances of the banks, which is a cause
of concern for the Reserve Bank, he said.
However, he said early indications are that the figures for the
fourth quarter are better than the third quarter. The gross nonperforming assets (NPAs) or bad loans of the domestic banking
system was 4.4 per cent of gross advances, he said at an event
organised by Assocham here.
To minimise the risk of default, he said, ‘There is a growing need
for banks to strengthen their internal credit appraisal system that
is on their credit assessment and risk management mechanisms.’
At the same time, he said, banks should consider using external
credit appraisals in conjunction with their own assessment.
This would mean getting the house in order and at least on this
score, banks would be on stronger ground. Banks would still
be vulnerable to other factors, such as economic slowdown or
policy changes or wilful defaults. But, one area of concern would
be plugged, he said.
‘We can see that among the proactive steps that a bank can take
to stem the problem of increasing level of NPAs and stressed assets, use of credit ratings is an important one,’ he added.
However, he said, banks need to balance the use of external ratings, as the recent financial crisis has highlighted the dangers of
overdependence on ratings.
Noting that growing NPAs are the biggest challenge for the
banking industry, he said a slowing economy is bound to see an
increase in bad loans.
‘Notwithstanding the economic weakness, NPAs of banks have
registered increase since 2011-12, which is a cause of concern for
us,’ he said, adding that the rise is more pronounced in the case
of public sector banks.
The gross NPAs of public sector banks rose to Rs 2.03 lakh crore
at the end of September from Rs 1.55 lakh crore on 31 March, 2013.
q FICCI all praise for Centre’s decision
New Delhi, June 1 (PTI):
The new government’s move to scrap all 30
GoMs and EGoMs set up by previous regime
is a step towards good governance, industry
body Ficci said.
‘FICCI welcomes yet another decisive step
towards sound governance, in the doing
away with the practice of ‘Group of Ministers’
and EGOMs,’ FICCI president Sidharth Birla
said.
The industry body has frequently and over the
past many months had been suggesting such a
step and it is an important element in government’s enabling agenda, he said.
An important element in its enabling agenda
for the government is that the Cabinet be in firm
control of decision making, with full accountability, he said.
Besides speeding up decisions and fast-tracking key projects to boost growth, the resulting
systemic robustness will enhance the confidence
of all stakeholders in our economy, Birla added.
Doing away with the practice of the preceding
UPA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
abolished all the 30 GoMs and EGoMs and told
ministries and departments to take decisions on
The industry body said
the Centre’s move besides speeding up decisions and fast-tracking
key projects, will enhance confidence of all
stakeholders
pending matters.
Announcing the decision to scrap nine Empowered Groups of Ministers and 21 Groups of
Ministers, the PMO said this would expedite the
process of decision-making and ‘usher in greater
accountability in the system.’
Meanwhile the Centre of Indian Trade Unions
said it is against a government proposal to raise
the FDI limit to 100 per cent in the defence sec-

New Delhi, June 1 (PTI):
Country’s second largest software services firm Infosys today

Such move (the government proposal to raise

totally detrimental to the interest of the indigenous defence production network, mainly under

Spain gambles on
Costa in WC squad
Madrid, June 1 (AP):
World Cup holder Spain included Diego
Costa in their 23-man squad for Brazil despite lingering worries over a leg injury to
the striker.
Costa has been hobbled for weeks by a
right thigh muscle problem, but coach Vicente
del Bosque is prepared to gamble that the
Atletico Madrid forward will be fit to lead the
defending champions’ attack.
Costa, who is a Brazilian-born Spanish national, is expected to
start ahead of Fernando Torres and David Villa, who were also in
the squad.
As expected, winger Jesus Navas was left out while Juan Mata was
included despite a mixed Premier League season.
Spain open against the Netherlands on 13 June in a repeat of the
2010 final. The world champions also play Chile and Australia in
Group B.
Sixteen of the 23 squad players who lifted the World Cup four years
ago return for Spain.
Del Bosque seemed to choose players like Mata and Torres on
favour rather than obvious merit heading into Brazil, with Real Madrid
playmaker Isco among those discarded. Bayern Munich midfielder
Thiago Alcantara was unavailable due to injury.
While Costa’s inclusion was hardly shocking, Del Bosque’s decision to base Spain’s attack around a forward who has been nagged
by a hamstring problem over the final two months of the season is
surprising considering his options.
Del Bosque stuck by Costa despite the availability of Juventus striker
Fernando Llorente and Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo. Negredo found himself starting from the bench over the close of the club
season but Llorente enjoyed a strong debut season at Juventus with
16 goals. While Llorente was in the Spain team that won the World
Cup four years ago and the European Championship in 2012, the
Basque striker played just 31 minutes over those two tournaments.

q Bailey lavishes praises on Sehwag
Bangalore, June 1 (PTI):
In what promises to be a high octane
IPL final here Sunday night, skippers
of Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight
Riders -- George Bailey and Gautam
Gambhir respectively -- are focusing on
their strengths instead of thinking much
about each other’s potential.
‘Kings XI are a very dangerous side.
We have to perform very well in all the
three departments to match their ability. What we need to do is to execute
what we have planned. We don’t
discuss about opponents but focus
on our strengths. We will keep this in
mind going into the match tomorrow,’
Gambhir said on the eve of the match
at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Bailey also acknowledged Kolkata
to be a consistent side in all departments, but his team is focusing on their
strengths rather than on opposition’s
potential.
‘Kolkata has been very consistent
right throughout in all departments. I
agree that worrying too much about the
opposition does not help. We will focus
on what we have to do in the ground,’
said the Australian.
Replying to a question, Bailey said

Gambhir concurred with Bailey’s
remarks, praising their final opponents.
Asked about critics writing about
Kolkata’s team composition during IPL

the comments of his team-mates than
the critics. ‘We don’t give importance to
critics. Most important thing is what the
bunch of players sitting in the dressing
room say about me and what I feel
about them,’ he said.
On Virender Sehwag’s sensational
hundred against Chennai Super Kings,
Bailey said the Delhi batsman had been
scripting valuable 30-40 runs innings,
which people did not appreciate.
‘I think people have been harsh on
him. He has played some beautiful innings of 30s and 40s, but did not score
big. The way Viru bats, forces the opposition to change their plans,’ he said.

wins;
Sania loses
Paris, June 1 (PTI):
Sania Mirza crashed out of
the mixed doubles event of
the French Open with Horia
Teacu after a stupendous
start but managed to reach
the pre-quarterfinals of the
women’s doubles, here yesterday.
Sania first took court for a
women’s doubles contest and
along with partner Cara Black
dispatched the unseeded
combine of Gabriela Dabrowski and Alicja Rosolska
6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
The fifth seed Indo-Zimbabwean pair needed just 59
minutes to move to the prequarterfinals.
Sania then paired with her
Romanian partner Tecau but
suffered a shock 6-1, 4-6,
7-10 defeat at the hands of
Timea Babos from Hungry
and American Eric Butorac to
bow out of the mixed doubles.
India’s challenge though is
still alive in the event as Rohan Bopanna and his second
seeded Slovakian partner
Katarina Srebotnik reached
the quarterfinals.
They had to work hard to
beat Cara Black and Robert
Farah 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in their
second round contest.
Bopanna and Katarina will
lock horns with eighth seeded team of Julia Goerges
from Germany and seasoned
Nenad Zimonjic from Serbia.

Action plan to
prevent train mishaps
New Delhi, June 1(PTI):
The Railway Ministry has drawn up an
action plan to prevent mishaps like the
Gorakhdham Express accident on 26 May
which resulted from fractured rail.
The accident which claimed about 26 lives
and injured several others was caused due
to fractured rails, according to a preliminary
report.
Accidents due to fractured rails at regular
intervals have caused a serious concern to
the national transporter. At a safety meeting chaired by Railway Minister Sadanand
Gowda, Railways has decided to strengthen
the mechanised maintenance of track and
increase the frequency of safety inspection
to address the problem.
Sadanand instructed officials to work on
a foolproof plan to ensure zero tolerance
on passenger fatalities at the meeting. The
Railways Safety Directorate gave a detailed
presentation about the prevailing system
and steps initiated to prevent mishaps.
Noting that accidents are happening at
regular interval due to fractured rail, the
minister has directed the Railway Board
to come up with a concrete action plan to
prevent such cases, said a senior Railway
Ministry official, who attended the safety
meeting after the recent accident.
‘Safety is one of the important factors
that needs to be taken care of by the
Railway Ministry,’ Sadanand had said

UP govt
Lucknow, June 1 (PTI):
Coming down hard on the

the noose around its own
patymen.
Reiterating her demand
for imposition of President’s

the State government is unable to control the situation
then in the interest of the
people it should relinquish
power. Otherwise we again
request the Governor to

she said.
Mayawati said that Centre

From Egypt to taste
food at Amma Canteen
Chennai, June 1 (PTI):
Officials from the Egypt government visited the popular state-run
‘Amma Canteen’ that sells food at
a subsidised price and said they
would come up with a similar model
in their country.
Eng Mohammed Adel Rezek,
accreditation director, Ministry of
Trade and Industry (Egypt) and
Ahmed Khalil, technical assessor,
visited a canteen functioning in the
Rajiv Gandhi Government General
hospital premises here yesterday.
‘We have been coming across
media reports on these canteens
and we are interested in study-
ing the model,’ Adel Rezek told
reporters.
The official said it was noteworthy that the government had taken
up such initiatives in India whereas
it was NGOs that were engaged
in such work in his country. They
had brief meetings with civic body
officials. One of them had visited
a canteen in Madurai on Friday.
All 200 wards in Chennai have an

Breakthrough eludes
TN police in blast case
Chennai, June 1 (PTI):
Tamilnadu CB-CID Police is pursuing ‘definitive clues’
in the twin blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express
train here on 1 May but a
breakthrough in the case still eludes them.
The blasts killed a 24-year-old woman techie Swathi,
hailing from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh besides injuring
14 persons.
The CB-CID found similarities between the Patna and
Chennai blasts and has completed several rounds of
probe in multiple locations including Bangalore, Patna
and Guwahati and questioned suspects.
The possibility of involvement of Indian Mujahideen
and absconding terror suspect Abubacker Siddique
with the support of certain terror sleeper cells continues to be probed.
The NIA’s arrest of four persons including Hyder Ali
alias ‘Black Beauty’ on 21 May in connection with the
Patna bombings ahead of Narendra Modi’s rally last
year increased hope that they may hold clues to the
blasts here as there were similarities between the two
bombings.
Police said ‘probe details’ cannot be disclosed now to
the media as investigation was at an ‘important’ juncture.
‘Be it NIA, central intelligence agencies or police
of other States, we are coordinating and taking
help whenever needed. We are following definitive
leads,’ an official said declining to elaborate.
The police has announced a reward of Rs five lakh
to any person who passes on information leading to
the identification or arrest of the culprits involved in
the twin blasts.

Man gets bail to
attend daughter’s
wedding
Chennai, June 1 (PTI):
Madras High Court on Saturday
granted an interim bail for a limited
period of two days to one of the two
accused involved in cheating a person of Rs 10 crore under the guise
of getting him a sand quarry permit.
Justice S Vydyanathan granted
two days interim bail to M Ganesan,
whose daughter’s betrothal and marriage is scheduled on Saturday and
Sunday.
The judge said from the facts it appeared a big fraud had taken place
where the two persons had cheated
the complainant, who paid them a
huge amount. It was also true that
a regular bail application has to be
moved before the court concerned.
Considering the facts that the betrothal and marriage of Ganesan’s
daughter was scheduled to be solemnized on Saturday and Sunday and
that his presence was required as he
was the father, the judge said he felt it
appropriate to grant interim bail to him
from Saturday to noon on Sunday.
Central Crime Branch contended
that Ganesan’s wife had been arrayed as accused no:1 and their son
as accused no 3. The prosecution’s
case was the trio cheated a man into
parting with Rs 10.15 crore, making
him believe they have obtained permit
of sand mining. They did not do so,
nor did they return the money.
On a complaint by the man, the father and son were arrested following
which they moved a lower court for
bail, without approaching the High
Court, citing the betrothal and marriage. The Court, which heard the
bail application, granted only limited
interim bail.
Chairman and Managing Director of Dr Agarwal’s Group of Eye
Hospital Amar Agarwal with music director Ganesh.
Agarwal’s Hospital to
composer’s rescue
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 1:
Some 28 years after losing vision in one of his eyes, noted
music director Ganesh (of the famed Shankar-Ganesh duo)
regained it following an advanced surgical technique adopted
by Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital here.
Ganesh had suffered injuries to his right eye besides his
hands when some explosive subtance received along with
mail exploded in 1986.
Though he had undergone an eye surgery then where the
‘cataractous lens’ was removed, an artifi cal lens was not
placed as there was no support to keep it, Chairman and
Managing Director of Dr Agarwal’s Group of Eye Hospital
Amar Agarwal, who had recently operated on Ganesh, told
reporters yesterday.
‘Since there was scarring in his cornea, a lens could not be
fixed,’ he said.
Ganesh underwent Glued Intra-ocular lens (IOL) technique
which is used for persons with serious eye injury, especially
bomb blast and cracker explosion injuries, he said.
Explaining the surgery, Amar Agarwal said the technique
involved fixing an Intra-ocular lens (IOL) into the eye using
biological (fibrin) glue. This has made possible successful
and stable IOL implantation in eyes where previously IOL
implantation was considered very difficult or fraught with
complications.
Further, he said the technique of Glued IOL was evolved
since 2007 and has been extended its application for a range of
different surgical usage as part of combined surgeries. It can
now be performed with foldable IOL as well which has made it
a totally suture less procedure using only glue for IOL fixation
as well as closure in all stages of the surgery.
Glued IOL is a technique for IOL fixation in eyes with absent
or insufficient capsular support which was first proposed by
Amar Agarwal in 2007. Since then, a large number of surgeries have been successfully done with this technique, he said.
This technique has also received international recognition
with prestigious awards from the American Society of Cataract
and Refractive Surgery in 2008 and from the World Ophthalmological Conference in 2010.
On his part, Ganesh said, ‘Though I could drive with difficulty,
I could not read or do intricate activities. When I went for a
check-up at Dr Agarwal’s a few months ago, doctors found
there was severe damage to my right eye.’
