As such, the educational programs of the International Academy of Science are dedicated to the advancement of applied science. Unlike traditional educational programs offered today by most colleges and universities, the IAS Program offers applied degrees in which students are given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. This degree program prepares students for employment opportunities in high-tech industry. The IAS Program is for students desiring careers in the high-tech industry. During the course of this hands-on, applied program, each IAS student is provided with a learning experience in which they will have an opportunity to find solutions to real-world problems. Funding for the IAS Educational Program comes primarily from industrial partners interested in providing valuable hands-on learning experiences to IAS students. Many students are provided with specialized training directly at the industrial partner’s facility. The Academy offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in various high-tech specialty areas. 3 ACADEMIC CALENDAR The International Academy of Science operates on a trimester calendar. 2013-2014 Term I August 12-16 September 3 September 30 - October 4 November 28-29 December 20 December 23-January 3 Enrollment for 2013-2014 School Year Classes Begin Autumn Break Thanksgiving Holiday Classes End Term Break Term II January 6 March 31-April 4 April 18 April 21-May 2 Classes Begin Spring Break Classes End Term Break Term III May 5 May 26 June 30-July 4 August 15 Classes Begin Memorial Day Holiday Summer Break Classes End 2014-2015 Term I August 11-15 September 2 September 29-October 3 November 27-28 December 19 December 22-January 2 Enrollment for 2014-2015 School Year Classes Begin Autumn Break Thanksgiving Holiday Classes End Term Break Term II January 5 April 6-10 April 24 April 27-May 8 Classes Begin Spring Break Classes End Term Break Term III May 11 May 25 June 29-July 3 August 21 Classes Begin Memorial Day Holiday Summer Break Classes End 4 2015-2016 Term I August 17-21 September 8 September 28-October 2 November 26-27 December 18 December 21-January 1 Enrollment for 2015-2016 School Year Classes Begin Autumn Break Thanksgiving Holiday Classes End Term Break Term II January 4 April 4-8 April 22 April 25-May 6 Classes Begin Spring Break Classes End Term Break Term III May 9 May 30 July 4-8 August 19 Classes Begin Memorial Day Holiday Summer Break Classes End 2016-2017 Term I August 22-26 September 6 September 26-30 November 24-25 December 16 December 19-January 1 Enrollment for 2012-2013 School Year Classes Begin Autumn Break Thanksgiving Holiday Classes End Term Break Term II January 3 April 3-7 April 21 April 24-May 5 Classes Begin Spring Break Classes End Term Break Term III May 8 May 29 July 3-7 August 18 Classes Begin Memorial Day Holiday Summer Break Classes End 5 ADMISSIONS ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A prospective student must make a written application to the school. Supporting documents, including student transcripts and other supporting documents, should be attached. Foreign, non-immigrant students must also provide proof of English proficiency and of financial responsibility for the student. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES Applicants are selected by an International Academy of Science review committee. Selection is based upon current program enrollment, intellectual abilities of the students as demonstrated by their high school GPA, and on the opinion of the committee concerning the student's ability to succeed -- not only in the Program, but also in industry after the degree is awarded. In selecting students for the Program, the International Academy of Science shall not discriminate against any applicant because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. IAS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Students planning to attend the International Academy of Science may apply for a full scholarship to cover the cost of tuition. At the end of each trimester, IAS will evaluate the status of each student on scholarship to assure that each student is succeeding in the program. Only those students succeeding in the program will be allowed to keep their IAS scholarship for this program. TRANSFER STUDENTS Transcripts from all colleges previously attended will be evaluated and credit may be given for courses completed if all other admission requirements have been met. ENROLLMENT DATES Annual enrollment in the IAS Program is to be completed by mid-August. (See Academic Calendar for exact dates.) Enrollments are also accepted at other times throughout the year. Students entering the program after classes have already begun for an academic year will receive credit based on when they begin the program. 6 ACADEMIC POLICIES AND REGULATIONS STUDENT CONDUCT All IAS students are expected to abide by the following rules: 1. Students may not use, possess, or dispense illegal drugs on campus. 2. Students may not bring alcohol on campus. 3. Theft and dishonest behavior is prohibited. 4. Students must not be found in violation of the law. 5. Smoking cigarettes is not allowed on campus. 6. Weapons are prohibited on campus. 7. Students are not permitted to possess any potentially dangerous materials. 8. Restricted areas should not be entered without permission. 9. Students are expected to abide by the rules and policies of IAS, including the Attendance Policy discussed below. Students found in violation of one or more of the above conditions may lose their scholarship and, in extreme cases, force IAS to cancel their enrollment in the Program. ATTENDANCE POLICY Regular and punctual class attendance is required. A student is considered tardy if not in the classroom at the designated time for the class to start. Excessive absences (including class cuts) and tardiness will have an adverse effect on student progress. A student, who has been absent for 10% or more of the year, will not receive credit for the course. In individual cases of extenuating circumstances, exceptions may be granted. Requests for exceptions must be made in writing and accompanied by full documentation. Students receiving veteran education benefits who have unsatisfactory attendance due to accumulated absences, tardiness, and class cuts exceeding ten percent of class contact hours, will be suspended. This suspension will be reported to the Veterans Administration within 30 days of the last date of attendance. 7 A student receiving veteran education benefits may be re-enrolled for benefits at the beginning of the term following the suspension because of unsatisfactory attendance only when the cause of unsatisfactory attendance has been removed. Students suspended a second time because of unsatisfactory attendance will not be allowed to re-enroll for benefits in the absence of mitigating circumstances. Mitigating Circumstances: Mitigating circumstances are those which directly hinder pursuit of a course and which are judged to be beyond student’s control. The following are some general categories of mitigating circumstances. (This list is not all-inclusive.) 1. Serious illness of the student receiving veteran education benefits 2. Serious illness or death of the student’s immediate family 3. Emergency financial obligations or change of place of employment or work schedule which precludes pursuit of the course 4. Active duty military service, including active duty for training Requests for a leave of absence may be made in writing. Permission for such leave shall be provided at the discretion of IAS. Students receiving veteran education benefits will have their benefits discontinued while on an official leave of absence. Since the Program is a hands-on applied program, students learn by receiving handson, individualized training. Students missing classes forego opportunities to learn each day they are absent. Due to the nature of this Program, no make-up work can be completed by students. In the case of excessive absences or tardiness, students will not receive credit for the courses they are enrolled in and may lose their scholarships. 8 GRADING POLICY Students participating in the IAS Program will be graded on their performance throughout the Program. Each student will receive a Pass (P) or Fail (F) grade, or a letter grade, for each completed course, as appropriate. For graded courses, IAS students will be graded on exams, lesson completion, and attendance using the following grading scale: 94-100% – A 90-93% – A87-89% – B+ 83-86% – B 80-82% – B77-79% – C+ 73-76% – C 70-72% – C67-69% – D+ 63-66% – D 60-62% – DBelow 60% – F A score of 70% or better is required to pass a course. A low grade point average could result in the loss of a scholarship. Progress records for all students enrolled in the IAS Program shall be kept and provided to students at the end of each trimester. ENROLLMENT CANCELLATION POLICY The International Academy of Science reserves the right to cancel the enrollment of any student under any of the following conditions: 1. The student wishes to withdraw from the Program. 2. The student fails a class in the Program. (The student may re-take the class if once failed. However, if twice failed, the student may be automatically suspended from the Program. The suspension may be waived, however, if the student requests such in writing, at the discretion of the Board of the International Academy of Science.) 3. The student fails to attend classes or meet other responsibilities pertaining to the Program. 4. The student leaves the Program without the permission of the Academy. 9 5. The student is found to use, possess, or dispense illegal drugs. 6. The student is alcoholic. 7. The student is involved in theft or other dishonest behavior. 8. The student is involved in inappropriate moral behavior. 9. The student is found to be in violation of the law. If any of the above conditions should apply to a student at the International Academy of Science, the following remedies will be taken: 1. The student will be notified of the specific condition for which his enrollment is being terminated. 2. The student will have 14 days from that time to make arrangements for his departure from the International Academy of Science or to make an appeal. 3. During the severance time, the student shall not attend classes at the Academy nor participate in any Academy projects. 4. The student may, upon request, receive a copy of the transcript of courses completed at the Academy, but a Letter of Recommendation or its equivalent will not be issued on behalf of any student who does not complete the Program. 5. All books, project results, equipment, etc. issued by the Academy remain the possession of the Academy and shall not be removed by the student. 6. If a student receives notice of termination, he may appeal to the Board of the International Academy of Science in writing during the 14-day severance period and his appeal shall be considered. However, the 14-day time limit shall still be in effect, and any decision by the Board will be final. 10 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To satisfy the requirements necessary to receive a Bachelor of Research degree through the IAS Program, students are expected to complete the necessary residency requirements and demonstrate competency by passing all of the requirements.
