Dance Concerts 2014 – 15 Season REDCAT Theater Downtown 631 West 2nd St. Los Angeles CA 90012 213 – 237 – 2800 REDCAT.org 1) Hyung Su Kim/Hyo Jin Kim: Madame Freedom October 2, 3 ,4 2014 (8:30 PM) to Sunday, October 5, 2014 (7:00 PM) tkts – $20 - $30 The Seoul-based video and performance collaborators who awed audiences at the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival, now present the U.S. premiere of their immersive Madame Freedom at REDCAT. A stirring fusion of live interactive dance and a sumptuous media installation that incorporates black-and-white footage from a famous 1956 Korean melodrama Jayu buin (Madame Freedom), this stage collaboration looks to the historical struggle of Korean women to break free of the social, economic and political constraints of yesteryear as it considers the uneasy contemporary legacy of hard-won changes nearly 60 years later. Today’s Madame Freedom is a rumination on identity, myth, and the tension between dreams and the burdens of the past. Choreographed by Hyo Jin Kim, who co-directs the production with Hyung Su Kim. 2) L-E-V: HOUSE November 20, 21, 22 (8:30 PM) 2014 to Sunday, November 23, 2014 (7:00 PM) tkts – $20 - $30 The passionate and high-voltage dance events created by collaborators Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar have firmly established them as potent forces in the international performance community, energizing a new generation of audiences. After gaining global praise with eye-opening works for Batsheva and other eminent dance ensembles, their own acclaimed company, L-E-V, is celebrated for an astute confluence of movement, music, lighting, fashion, art and technology— each uniquely expressive while emotionally entwined. Their electrifying piece HOUSE, a sultry and intoxicating ensemble work set to the driving beats of an original score by Ori Lichtik, is delivered by fiercely talented dancers that move with expressive precision. L-E-V feeds off of emerging technologies and integrates them effortlessly and unobtrusively into cross- disciplinary stagings that could be equally at home at a techno-club or opera house. 3) Rashaun Mitchell and Stephin Meritt:Performance December 4, 5, 6 2014 (8:30 PM) to Sunday, December 7, 2014 (7:00 PM) tkts – $20 - $30 The intoxicating choreography of former Merce Cunningham dancer Rashaun Mitchell meets the fanciful musical stylings of Magnetic Fields singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt in a space of liquid luminosity—a beguiling visual design created by installation artist Ali Naschke-Messing with lighting design by Davison Scandrett. A celebration of the mysteries in the art of performance, of on-the-spot wit and invention, and of the absurd, this one-of-a-kind collaboration is inspired by an observation from Richard Avedon: “We all perform. It’s what we do for each other all the time, deliberately or unintentionally. It’s a way of telling about ourselves in the hope of being recognized as what we’d like to be.” Mitchell is joined by dancers Hiroki Ichinose, Cori Kresge and Silas Riener; Merritt performs solo, on and off the stage. A brilliant, slyly political story written in the 1930s, The Old Woman stars world-renowned dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov and film star Willem Dafoe. With echoes of Beckett in its deadpan narrative and humor, The Old Woman is one of the great works of the Russian avant-garde and tells the story of a struggling young writer. 3) Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes: The Daisy Theatre Tue, Nov 11, 2014 at 8:00 PM Wed, Nov 12, 2014 at 8:00 PM Thu, Nov 13, 2014 at 8:00 PM Fri, Nov 14, 2014 at 8:00 PM Sat, Nov 15, 2014 at 8:00 PM Sun, Nov 16, 2014 at 7:00 PM Actors Gang at Ivy Substation $39 ($15 UCLA students) Inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, The Daisy Theatre blends improvisation, variety acts, music and monologues, all with a resident company of over 30 marionette characters. Featuring Abraham’s signature style of mellifluous fluidity juxtaposed with sharp accents, The Watershed follows the universal aspiration toward freedom and simultaneously references emancipation following the Civil War, the political tumult of 1960s, and civil rights challenges of our present day. The work features arresting scenic design by world-renowned visual artist Glenn Ligon and a score ranging from a contemporary cello suite to the soulful sounds of Otis Redding. 6) Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion: When The Wolves Came In Fri, Feb 13, 2015 at 8:00 PM Royce Hall $19 - $69 ($15 UCLA students) An all new repertory-based program, When the Wolves Came In explores the historical legacy of two totemic triumphs in the international history of Civil Rights: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 20th anniversary of the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa. The works take their inspiration from Max Roach’s iconic 1960 protest album We Insist: Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, which celebrated the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and shed a powerful light on the growing Civil Rights movement in South Africa and the U.S. T The powerful themes inherent in these historical milestones are evident in Abraham’s choreography, the evocative scenery of visual artist Glenn Ligon, the visceral power of Roach’s masterwork, and the original compositions of Grammy Award-winning jazz musician, Robert Glasper. 7) Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company & SITI Company: A Rite Fri, Mar 6, 2015 at 8:00 PM Sat, Mar 7, 2015 at 8:00 PM Royce Hall $19 - $69 ($15 UCLA students) Conceived, directed, and choreographed by Anne Bogart, Bill T. Jones and Janet Wong A Rite is the intriguing and powerful dance-theater collaboration between renowned artists Bill T. Jones, Anne Bogart and their respective companies, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company. An impassioned scholar waxes poetic about the cyclical structure of Stravinsky’s work which, in turn, evokes questions about our place in space/time. A shell-shocked World War I veteran finds solace from his battle-scarred psyche in the work’s opening chords while reeling under the relentless assault of The Augurs’ bombastic percussion. A Rite seamlessly joins minds, bodies and voices for a riveting reflection on Stravinsky’s groundbreaking score. 8) Delfos Danza Contemporanea: Cuando los Disfraces se Cuelgan Tue, Apr 14, 2015 at 8:00 PM Royce Hall $19 - $59 ($15 UCLA students) Cuando los Disfraces se Cuelgan (When the Disguises Are Hung Up) is a reflection on appearances, the loss and rediscovery of the self, told through a vocabulary that combines multimedia and dance, employing a lyrical aesthetic marked by intense physicality.
