The theme for this year is “Let The Light Shine.” This is a fitting theme for this year’s Choral Festival being held here in Michigan. As you have the opportunity to go to downtown St. Joseph this weekend or around the area to the waterfront, you will notice lighthouses. Lighthouses dot the coastline of Lake Michigan and our other Great Lakes. There are more lighthouses in Michigan than in any other state. They are the stars of the shore as they still shine for ships while others simply tell their stories with us as museums. Our Savior Jesus tells us in his sermon on the mount in Matthew 6:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put in on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Our young people this weekend get to show us all how they let THE LIGHT IS JESUS. IT IS HE WHO BURNS INSIDE US. IT IS HE WHO MOTIVATES AND GUIDES US. AND IT IS HE WHO WE REFLECT TO OTHERS. their lights shine. They will be on stage before us and will help enrich and enlighten our lives and our faith. Of course we all know what “The Light” is that we are letting shine. The light is Jesus. It is he who burns inside us. It is he who motivates and guides us. And it is he who we reflect to others. May all our lights shine brightly with Jesus not just this weekend, but throughout your lives as we point people to their Lord and give Shooting Star...................................................................................................Arr. by Audrey Synder Festival Singers of Michigan Lutheran High School Choreographers: Victoria Lindenfeld, Joshua Nolte, Emily Zerrenner Aftermath..................................................................................... by Eric Hagmann & Lauren Becker Classic.............................................................................................................................Arr. by Wright The Academy Kids of Winnebago Lutheran Academy Choreographer: Bailey Norris Linus & Lucy.................................................................................................... Members are chosen through tryouts held in the spring of the previous school year. The Hawk Singers represent their school by performing at many area churches and in concerts during the school year. They love to sing and bring glory to God through their vocal talents. The members of the Hawk Singers are excited to participate in this year’s Choral Festival. We especially take this opportunity to thank Michigan Lutheran High School for hosting this wonderful event. Illinois Lutheran High School Illinois Lutheran High School’s Micahtam is an auditioned cocurricular ensemble that rehearses once a week outside of the school day. This group, comprised of freshman through seniors, performs a wide variety of music at all of our school concerts. It is also our privilege to share the Word in song with WELS congregations in our area. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Ryan Stangl and Michigan Lutheran High School for all of the work that they put into making this Choral Festival a successful and enjoyable experience for everyone! Lakeside Lutheran High School Lakeside’s Swing Choir is a select group chosen by tryout from its A Cappella Choir. They represent Lakeside and their Lord in various venues in the community and federation throughout the year. We wish to thank MLHS and Mr. Stangl for being such gracious hosts. Michigan Lutheran High School – St. Joseph, MI Michigan Lutheran Seminary – Saginaw, MI Shoreland Lutheran High School – Somers, WI Winnebago Lutheran Academy – Fond du Lac, WI Wisconsin Lutheran High School – Milwaukee, WI 4 5 Luther Preparatory School Michigan Lutheran High School Music plays a vital role on the campus of Luther Preparatory School. Over ninety percent of our students volunteer to participate in one of four choirs. The Prep Singers are chosen by audition from the 200-voice Junior-Senior Chorus. The Prep Singers represent our school and our synod’s worker-training system in various churches and schools throughout the WELS. The Prep Singers and their director wish to thank Mr. Stangl and the entire Michigan Lutheran High School faculty, staff, and volunteers for all their work with hosting this year’s Eastern Regional festival! The Festival Singers are the musical representatives for Michigan Lutheran High School, chosen by audition each spring from the members of the Titan Concert Choir. These sophomores, juniors, and seniors visit our 12 association congregations in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana to present God’s Word in song on our ML Sundays each year. They also perform in our three school concerts and represent our school at other congregational and civic activities. It has been an amazing experience to host this year’s regional choral festival! Thank you to all the young musicians and their directors for preparing for and participating in this special event. May all we do give praise and thanks to our God and Savior Jesus Christ! As you all return to your homes after this weekend, remember to “Let the Light Shine” in your lives! Manitowoc Lutheran High School “My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.” (Psalm 108:1) What an awesome privilege it is to be at Michigan Lutheran this weekend! We are really excited to be here among fellow believers raising our voices heavenward as we sing God’s praises! What a wonderful blessing we have in the WELS Choral Fest! The Lancer Singers are a 24-voice extracurricular choir chosen by audition from the 55-voice Concert Choir. They serve as musical ambassadors as they participate in worship services at our federation congregations, perform in our four school concerts, and represent our school at other congregational and civic activities. This group has been extremely successful in the Wisconsin State Music Association district and state competitions. During the past 16 years the Lancer Singers have received ratings of 1*. In April of 2008 the Lancer Singers earned 1st Place in the High School Jazz Swing Choir category and were chosen as the Best Overall High School Choir at the Chicago Festivals of Music. In April of 2012 and again in April of 2014 they received a gold at the World Strides Heritage Music Festival in Chicago in the Vocal Jazz Choir category. The Lancer Singers love to sing (especially praises to our Lord!) and continue to pursue excellence in vocal performance. The Lancer Singers would like to thank the staff and students of ML (especially Mr. Stangl) for hosting the 2014 WELS Regional Choral Festival and making this weekend a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Christians and raise our voices together in song! 6 Michigan Lutheran Seminary At Michigan Lutheran Seminary all students are involved in music classes throughout their high school years. The Concert Choir and Chapel Choir are both auditioned groups for juniors and seniors. The Concert Choir represents the school at area congregations and on tours which have taken them to Texas, Arizona, the East Coast and Canada. In 2015 the choir will take a 13-day tour to Florida. Hardin Street Harmony is a subset of the Concert Choir. Each spring the group goes on a mini-tour to recruit for the public ministry. In the past they have traveled to New York, St. Louis, the Carolinas, and Ohio. Vocal director, Len Proeber, and choreographer, Sherry Kunde, have been working with Hardin Street Harmony for the past 19 years! Shoreland Lutheran High School The Festival Choir serves as the ambassador choir of our school. The students sing in Federation Congregations about 15 times a year. We also participate in the school concerts, as well as Wisconsin School Music Association events. Twenty-one of our 39-voice choir are here to represent our school. We are happy to be here from the other side of the pond, and offer a huge “thank you” to MLHS for hosting the Festival this year! Thanks for the great memories! 7 Winnebego Lutheran Academy The WLA Academy Kids have been in the process of transitioning from a long history of being a show choir to being a modern contemporary a cappella choir in the likes of groups on NBC’s The Sing Off or the movie Pitch Perfect. Because they graduated their show choir band a couple of years ago, AK is now becoming a complete vocal band: there is one dedicated vocal percussionist (VP) and one dedicated bass for each piece. Everyone else in the group becomes part of the accompaniment or is a soloist. AK has challenged themselves this year to audition for the ICHSA regionals, a nationally sponsored high school a cappella competition. For more information, see VarsityVocals.com. Wisconsin Lutheran High School Now in its fourth decade of existence, The Wisco Kids Show Choir continues the tradition of performing full musical revues for a wide variety of audiences throughout the year. In addition, the group participates in music festivals each school year where it continues to receive the highest ratings at these festivals. The joy of performing, of forming lasting friendships, of entertaining people and making them feel good, and of using their gifts to glorify their gracious Lord make being a part of this group special to each of its members. A big thank you to Michigan Lutheran High School for keeping the choral festival tradition going and growing! 2014 East Regional Choral Festival Sacred Concert Inspiration is Wisconsin Lutheran High School’s co-curricular vocal jazz ensemble. The group performs both secular and sacred music and considers it a privilege to perform in WLHS concerts and chapel services. They have also performed in WELS church services and at community events in addition to participating in WSMA district and state contests. We join forces with Wisco Kids each spring and feature one number in the school year’s final concert. We are excited to present a combined number with Wisco Kids for this year’s Choral Festival Pops Concert. Inspiration and their director thank Mr. Stangl and Michigan Lutheran High School for hosting this year’s festival and letting His light shine. Jeff graduated from ML in 2006, from Bethany Lutheran College in 2010, Ball State University in 2012, and is currently training for the pastoral office at Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary (ELS). He has been very active with digital media and graphic design throughout his years of study. It was a joy to work with him again in creating the design concepts for this year’s festival! Regarding the festival logo, Jeff gives the following insights on the design: We are saved not just because Christ shines light like a headlight on where we need to look and what we need to do for our salvation, no we are saved by the Light itself. Christ is the Light, and His Light shines brightest at the cross, cutting through darkness once and for all. 3. The waves - The waves flow to appear like a music staff. It is the darkest area of the logo so the waves also symbolize the hardships and turmoil of the world, emphasizing the theology of the cross in daily life. The music notes come from the lighthouse and break up the waves, since the Word of God united with music will fight the Devil’s temptations and accusations and bring peace and comfort to those who hear it. 1. The Lighthouse - The St. Joseph North Pier lighthouse is the icon for the region. The theme was a play on that idea so I wanted to incorporate that specific lighthouse, rather than just any lighthouse. This was a bit of a challenge, with its unique roofline. 4. The shape - Admittedly boxy, the constrictions of the logo serve to give it a more elegant look, making it fit both for a secular pops concert and worthy of a sacred Divine Service. In addition, it helps bring out the cross, which should be front and center of our whole life. 2. Let THE Light Shine - In initial discussions, the decision was made to not do “Let YOUR Light Shine,” since it is subjective in nature. Let The Light Shine makes it clear that the light that is shining is Christ’s own Light. The cross in the design forms not only the rays of light, but the lighthouse itself. We sincerely thank Jeff for his creative efforts for this festival! 16 Joel Ungemach is a native of Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he attended Friedens Lutheran School and Shoreland Lutheran High School.
