Fernandez victorious in
revived Cholsey Chase
ABINGDON’S Paul Fernandez
powered to victory at a very
wet and muddy Cholsey Chase.
Fernandez led home a field of 198
over the challenging nine-mile multiterrain course in 55mins 11secs as the
race was revived by Reading-based
Barnes Fitness after an eight-year
absence.
David Jackson, from Benson, was
second in 56.48, while Dan Hamilton,
another Abingdon athlete, finished
third in 1hr 24secs.
Cholsey-based Sarah Dudgeon (Ser-
pentine) took the ladies’ honours in
1.06.51, with Olney Roadrunners' Juliette Mintner second in 1.09.32.
Third overall was another Cholsey
resident, Becky Hibbert, in 1.11.55,
while Abingdon’s Sarah Lackman
was the third senior lady in 1.12.37.
Race director Ellie Barnes said: “It’s
a tough route at the best of times and
it was particularly challenging this
year because of both the mud caused
by recent flooding and the weather on
the day.
“But we’ve had only positive feed-
Bolton and Carter on
song at windy Bourton
JAMES Bolton and Sophie
Carter were Oxfordshire’s
leading performers at the
Bourton 10K.
Woodstock Harriers’ Bolton finished seventh and
retained the vet 40 men’s title
he won last year.
Carter, who lives in Woodstock, but now runs for Belgrave Harriers, was third
senior lady.
Strong winds meant times
were slower than expected
on what is usually a fast
course.
Bolton crossed the line in
33mins 18secs, while Carter
clocked 38.10.
Diane Moore (Headington
Road Runners) was the first
vet 35 lady home in 40.14.
Problems with marshalling
meant several runners
crossed the finish line on
their penultimate lap of the
back and we’re looking forward to
making the Cholsey Chase a regular
fixture from now on.
“We attracted a mixed field with a
lot of club runners from around the
region – Abingdon AC made it a club
championship event – but also a good
number of unattached runners.”
Scott Smith-Bannister (Aldershot)
took the vet 50 men’s honours after
finishing fifth in 1.01.48.
Abingdon’s Matthew Hart was the
vet 40 champion in 1.05.26, while Mike
Hollis (Handy Cross) won the vet 60
category in 1.15.36.
Reading AC member Susan Francis,
from Goring, took the vet 40 ladies’
prize in 1.13.59.
Kate Williamson showed she is still
a force to be reckoned with when landing the vet 60 honours.
The 68-year-old Eynsham Road
Runner, who is consistently in
Britain’s top five for her age group,
clocked 1.20.30 to finish 68th overall.
Her Eynsham clubmate Katherine
Bates was the first vet 50 lady home in
1.18.36.
Bunn shines at the national
FIONA Bunn maintained her
strong recent form with a
top-20 placing in the Saucony
English National Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.
The Abingdon athlete finished 17th in the under 15
girls’ race over 4km, clocking
16mins 9secs.
Abingdon clubmate Nick
Wiltshire (11.53) was 38th in
the 3km under 13 boys’ event.
Oxford City’s Gemma
Bridge was the county’s leading performer at senior level.
Bridge finished 60th in the
ladies’ event, clocking 32.00
for the 8km course.
Jonny Cornish (Hercules
Wimbledon) was the only
member of Oxon’s men’s team
selected for the Inter-Counties Championships to com-
DAN Studley helped England
to victory in the Brooks
Armagh International 5K
road race.
The Oxford Brookes
University student finished
12th in 14mins 28secs.
Studley was England’s
second scorer as they won
the team event by five
points.
He said: “I felt great for the
first 3km, but as the race
pushed on I didn’t quite have
the race sharpness I wanted.
“I still ran a two-second
personal best to top the
English under 23 rankings.
“With 45 athletes breaking
15 minutes, it was easily the
strongest road race in
Europe.”

pete at Wollaton Park.
Cornish, from Wantage,
came 307th, completing the
12km course in 42.37.
 RADLEY’S Rose Webb
defied 60mph winds to win a
silver medal at the British
Masters 10-mile road championships in Maryport, Cumbria.
Webb finished second in the
over 65 ladies’ category after
clocking 1hr 50mins 46secs.
Run over an undulating
course, athletes battled
against rain and a very strong
headwind for most of the second half of the race.
 THE under 15 girls were
Oxfordshire’s leading performers with a third-place finish in the south east regional
sportshall finals at Burgess
Hill.
Oxon’s under 13 boys came
fourth, with their under 13
girls and under 15 boys fifth.
