Independent bookshops were behind Wonder from the start and were instrumental in building the buzz and spreading the word. Independent bookshops are the lifeblood of book publishing, quite simply they are awesome.” Ruth Ozeki: “Independent bookshops are the keystone species of our cultural ecosystem. When they are endangered, the rest of our species is imperilled as well. When they flourish, so do we all. Luckily, we know this somehow. Independent booksellers are an adaptable and resilient lot, and readers and writers are loyal and stubborn, and together we form a strong relationship of symbiotic mutualism. I am forever indebted to the independent booksellers who have supported my work and enabled me, a tiny organism in this vast cultural ecology, to write and thrive.” Promotion of Shortlisted Titles to Consumers All shortlisted titles for the IBW Book Award will be promoted by the BA/IBF to its independent members in the following ways: All booksellers registered for Independent Booksellers Week 2014 will receive high quality POS materials featuring all 34 shortlisted titles, including posters and bookmarks The IBW Book Award Winners will be a central focus for Independent Booksellers Week 2014 All Prize POS materials will reflect the design for IBW 2014 The IBW and BA websites will carry full information about the shortlisted titles An IBW Award shortlist leaflet will be made available to bookshops for downloading and for use on their own websites – this will include jacket and title information, as well as enhanced information on the author and title Shortlisted authors will have the opportunity to participate in bookshop events as part of IBW All independent bookseller members of the BA will receive regular bulletins about the shortlisted titles Midas PR will handle the PR for the shortlisted titles and the winners and will be available for author and title promotion within the confines of the IBW Book Award Press coverage will be sought in trade and national press for shortlist and winners The Small Print All titles submitted by publishers will be voted on by all IBW booksellers in an online vote, creating an Award Shortlist All Award Shortlists titles will be read and judged by the IBW Book Award Judging Panel, consisting of two, independent bookseller members of the BA, an author and a well-known book lover – under a Chairman who will hold the casting vote The IBW Book Award Judging Panel may call in titles not submitted by the publisher; the financial decision to submit will ultimately rest with the submitting publisher Publishers will be informed of the shortlist as soon as possible after the initial voting process is complete; publishers will be asked to immediately inform their shortlisted authors and establish their availability for IBW The shortlist will be publicly announced one month before IBW (end May 2014) to allow for maximum exposure of the shortlisted titles The three winners of the IBW Book Award 2014 will be announced on 28th June 2014, the first day of IBW The winning titles will be the main focus of IBW in-store promotion The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
