West Side Snackables
Pupils at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School, just down the street
from the Main Office in Charleston, collected boxes full of snacks and tissues
to donate to the Hubbard Hospice House as part of school philanthropy
project. Students representing the classes involved in the project are pictured
above with teacher Melinda Clay and Volunteer Director Melanie Allen
(from l-r): Vincent Johnson, Kiara Hearns, Landon Navarro, Lateef Keaton,
Simya Clark, Tyra Venning, Brook Palmer, Emily Miller, and Ethan Proffit
(kneeling). “I can’t say enough kind words about Hospice,” Melinda said.
Well, we can’t say enough nice words about these kids! 1
BODY, MIND & SPIRIT
Pam King
celebrates
25 years
cancer-free
Page makes
mom proud
Nurse Practitioner Lora Bowens took
pride in her son, Joey Bowens, serving
as a page during the recent Legislative
Session at the State Capitol. Here’s
hoping the experience helped spark
an interest in civic involvement and
will help Joey further develop his
public service and leadership skills as
he grows up. Joey’s aunt and uncle,
Angie Matthews and Lee Bowens,
are also very proud of their nephew. Staff at the Main Office last
month surprised Pam King with
balloons, a pink HospiceCare
bag and a card to show their
support of her being cancer-free
for 25 years. “The gifts are very
much appreciated,” she said. “I
am truly blessed to be involved
with each of you and a unified
team.” At the tender age of 35,
Pam was diagnosed with
breast cancer on March 19,
1989. The cancer was removed
four days later on March 23. She
worked full time while receiving
chemo, from April 14 to Sept.
15 that year. “I started work
here March 6, 1990 and feel like
God put me here so I could
help some by taking referrals,
and encourage others (my
associates), and to give
something back. The journey
has been amazing and I
consider myself a ‘victor’ and
not just a survivor.” Brownie Troop packs boxes
of cookies for Hubbard House
In a very sweet gesture, members of local Brownie Troop 1817
visited the Hubbard Hospice House last month and brought with
them dozens of boxes of everyone’s favorite Girl Scout Cookies!
“I have 17 girls but could only bring 5 that day,” Troop Leader
Pam Heath said, explaining that they were all very enthusiastic
to help. “The girls I brought have already asked me how old
they have to be to volunteer at someplace like HospiceCare.”
Pictured with Pam at left (l-r) are Anna Carter, Adeline Queen,
Allison Heath, Katie Campbell, and Zoe Charles. Other troop
members include: Lauren & Lily Goggins, Finley Lohan, Hadley
Long, Alaina Potters, Emma Ratrie, Jenna Raupp, Kate Smith,
Lily Smith, Lucy Smith, Emi Stacy and Ireland Wiley. 2

Volunteer celebrates her 90 years
Medical Records Coordinator Kitty Kiser, left, and associate Lillian Hunter,
right, helped long-time volunteer Fay Jack celebrate her 90th birthday
last month with a cake and gifts. Not only is Fay still going strong, she
explained how far she’s come from when she was first born. Born at just
over 2 pounds, she was small enough to fit comfortably in a shoe box and
in order to keep her warm and protected, her parents placed heated
bricks around the shoe box. How’s that for a state-of-the-art NICU?! (Don’t forget to thank a volunteer during National Volunteer Week, April 6-12! )
No better time to plan your future
National Healthcare Decisions Day is Wednesday, April 16 and its purpose
is to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the
importance of advance care planning.
National Healthcare Decisions Day is an
initiative to encourage patients to
express their wishes regarding healthcare
and for providers and facilities to respect
those wishes, whatever they may be. As
a Medicare participant, HospiceCare is
required to: provide information about
health care decision-making rights; ask
all patients if they have an advance
directive; educate staff and community
about advance directives; and not
discriminate against patients based on
an advance directive status. Although
West Virginia has the highest completion
of advance directives in the country,
fewer than half of all West Virginians have completed these forms. For
anyone interested in learning more about advnaced directives, living
wills and other related issues, please contact HospiceCare Social Worker
Director Richie Hills, or visit the West Virginia Center for End-of-Life Care’s
website at www.wvendoflife.org or call them at (877) 209-8086. 3
