Message of the Month MESSAGE OF THE MONTH: A PP RE CI AT I ON from Master Turnquist Appreciation is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. Cicero Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. Voltaire Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them is the true measure of our thanksgiving. W. T. Purkiser As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. William Arthur Ward Today is a gift, that’s why they call it “the present”! By Sarah Stebbins Red attracts. A 2012 French study reported that female online daters received nearly twice as many e -mails from potential mates when they wore ruby shirts over another shade. The reason: “Red reminds people of how their face looks when they blush in the presence of someone they’re interested in,” says Adam Alter, an assistant professor of marketing at New York University, in New York City, and the author of Drunk Tank Pink. Blue may reduce criminal behavior. After officials near Kyoto, Japan, installed blue streetlights in dangerous neighborhoods in 2005, the overall crime rate fell by 9 percent. It turns out, says Alter, that “the lights mimic those atop police cars and seem to imply that the police are watching.” Shoppers are less likely to buy bright yellow bananas than warmer yellow ones. Warm yellow suggests “a riper fruit,” says brand adviser Martin Lindstrom, the author of Brandwashed. “Fruit producers plant crops under conditions most ideal for creating the just-right shade.” Strawberries have long been packaged in complementary green baskets, which make even imperfect berries appear vibrant and juicy, says Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Red and yellow are go-to choices for the logos of fastfood chains, like McDonald’s and Burger King. Bright, warm colors “leap” forward (whereas cool shades recede), beckoning you to the drive-through, says Eiseman. Ruddy and golden hues also stimulate the appetite because of the plethora of foods in those colors. Hello, burgers and fries! Mug cakes in the morning You'll love these simple recipes for breakfast in a cup! You may already be a fan of mug cakes — the singleserving microwave cakes you create in a cup make pretty irresistible desserts. Easy? Check. Convenient? Check. Delicious? Check. Waistline-friendly portion control? Check. But if you haven't tried mug cakes for breakfast, you're in for a treat. Get your mug out, gather a few simple ingredients and prepare for a steamy morning blueberry muffin mug from Mima Sinclair's new book, "Mug Cakes." "Missing the frosting and toppings?" asks Sinclair. "Top your mug cakes with a generous spoon of creamy Greek yogurt swirled with your favorite jam. Or scatter with granola just before cooking to create a nice crunchy topping." Page 5 Blueberry muffin This is so delicious and so easy… just don’t get into the habit of eating one for breakfast everyday! Ingredients 2 tablespoons butter 1 medium egg 1 tablespoon low-fat milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 4 tablespoons self-rising flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon pinch of salt 3 tablespoons fresh blueberries 1/2 teaspoon demerara (raw) sugar Place the butter in a 12-ounce mug and microwave for 10 –20 seconds until melted. Add the egg, milk and vanilla to the mug and beat with a fork until thoroughly combined. Add the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt and beat again until smooth. Fold in half the blueberries and then top with the remainder. Cook in the microwave. Microwave cooking times differ according to the wattage of your oven. If you have a 600 watt microwave, it'll take 2 minutes 20 seconds; allow 2 minutes for an 800 watt oven and 1 minute 40 seconds for 1,000 watts. Sprinkle with demerara (raw) sugar and serve while it is still a little warm. Swap: Swap raspberries for the blueberries or little chunks of pear — and if you do that, throw in a few chocolate chips, too, given they go so well together! More mug cake ideas Once you've mastered the mug cake, mix up the flavor combos with the following suggestions from Sinclair. Cherry and Almond: Stir almond butter through your wet batter before adding the dry ingredients and a few halved cherries. You can even add some chopped almonds to the mix. Banana and Honey: Stir a couple of tablespoons of honey and half a mashed banana through the batter mix. Once cooked, top with slices of the remaining banana and drizzle with extra honey to serve. Toasted Hazelnut and Orange: Use a little fresh orange juice in place of milk and stir toasted hazelnuts and orange zest through the batter. Top with orange segments and a little brown sugar. Mr. Minne who usually takes the photos was out of the country (London won over the testing), but Jen Ferber did a fine job in his place.
