HLC Careers Talk on Business
On Wednesday, 29 January Garry Cuthbert, Managing Director of Reef Business Systems Limited, gave a talk to over
40 girls from the Sixth Form about his illustrious career in Business and the skills and personality needed to succeed in
gaining employment.
Garry Cuthbert is a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He founded his company in 1994, to
provide bespoke software and consultancy in all areas of sales and process control. Garry’s
experience has been acquired in the motor industry, developing and implementing
lucrative software systems such as Optimiser, Track, and SmartCalc.
Garry’s talk focused on his own business experiences and also the importance of employability and
‘getting over the threshold’. In particular, Garry emphasised how crucial it is to be personable and
engaging at the interview stage and not parking your personality at the door! Gary also highlighted to
the girls the need to demonstrate their ability to influence at an interview, via what they say, the tone
of their voice and their actions and physical behaviour.
The HLC Careers Talks Programme is designed to give the girls from Upper 5 to Upper 6 the opportunity to find out
about various careers from people who are experts in their field. Talks take place in the Mem Room on Wednesday
lunchtimes at 1.15pm.
Forthcoming Careers Talks include:
Monday, 3 February 2014 - Marcus Burnett, Manager - UK and Ireland - Laureate Hospitality Education (in the
Conference Room)
Wednesday, 26 February 2014 - Richard Cooper, Constituency Office Manager for Andrew Jones MP – Careers
in Government and Politics
Wednesday, 5 March 2014 - Anne Gartside, Momentum Films – Careers in the Film Industry
Wednesday, 12 March 2014 - Holly Cocker, BBC Film Director – Careers in TV & the Media
Wednesday, 19 March 2014 - Careers in Engineering – Helen Boyd, Heerema Marine Contractors

Award Winning Charlotte does it again!
We were very proud to learn that Charlotte Lawson, Upper 4, had been awarded pdsa Young Fundraiser of the Year
for the second time in 2013. This is an incredible achievement, well done Charlotte! Here is Charlotte’s account of a
day she spent at a Veterinary Practice in Leeds.
“Recently, I received the pdsa Fundraiser of the Year 2013
Award, the second time I had won, and had the opportunity
to shadow a vet for the day at the pdsa hospital in Leeds.
It was amazing and I got to do lots of vet jobs. I was given
the job of hand feeding a 3 week old kitten, watched a drip
being set up on a dog in the isolation unit, who had parvo
virus (I prepared the swabs!) and had to check all the stock
that arrived on the delivery van that day......lots of dog food,
new muzzles and saline bags!
I got shown around the x ray room, the post-op dog kennels
and spent time with the vet in Consultations. The veterinary
nurses told me all about what they do and the reception
staff told me about their job too. It’s a real team effort.
The best bit was watching an emergency operation on a Staffordshire bull terrier, who had eaten a tea towel. Her
whole bowel had to be pulled out, displayed on the table and the vet took over an hour to find all the bits of cloth. The
vet nurses let me help heat the water up, which flushed out all the bits. It was really messy, lots of blood and a bit
smelly. The dog had an 8 inch incision. It was really weird
seeing the inside of a real animal and seeing it`s organs. It
hasn`t put me off!
Then a funny thing happened to me. The vet had a poorly
rabbit and he told me he was going to "put it to sleep". I thought
he was getting it ready for an operation. It was a white rabbit,
just like my rabbits Poppy and Ruby. I didn`t realise until
afterwards that it had been "put to sleep" for good! That was
really sad but the best outcome for the rabbit so the vet said.
I learnt a lot yesterday and I`m really pleased as the head vet
has invited me back to start doing voluntary work with them in
the school holidays.
The staff were really
appreciative of the
funds I raised, a total of
£1335 over two years.
I’m really grateful to all
my family and friends, who sponsored me. Thanks again for your help.
I’m going to keep raising money, but on a smaller scale. This year I’m going to
start doing regular vet voluntary work and start a log book, as well as start my
GCSE`s!
I hope you like the photos…....the kitten is so cute!”

Spring Roll Club
At lunchtime on Tuesday, 28 January the girls who lead the Spring
Roll Club, cooked a Chinese feast in Lincoln House to celebrate
Chinese New Year. They produced several delicious and unusual
dishes; completely different from the average Chinese takeaway! We
were treated to special Chinese New Year cake, soup with glass
noodles; stir fried pork, scallops with prawns, carrot cake (but not quite
like the sort of carrot cake you would get in a café here!) and egg and
tomato. There was even a sweet soup with white fungi and papaya to
help give us clear skin! Thank you girls for a real treat!

Chinese New Year
On Thursday, 30 January the boarding girls in college were treated to
a Chinese New Year Banquet.
The dining room was transformed into an “All you can Eat” Buffet
Restaurant, to celebrate the Year of the Horse.
Two live cooking stations created some wonderful far eastern cooking
smells, as Chefs Sebastian & Steve cooked Chinese and Mongolian
hot pot’s to order.
Meanwhile, Chef Jane made authentic Peking Duck in front of the girls
and the buffet was completed with Kung Pao Stir Fry Chicken,
Chinese Egg Rolls, Jiaozi (Chinese dumplings),Tofu, bean shoot &
water chestnut stir fry, baked chicken wings with sticky hoi sin, greens
and rice. Baked Egg custard tart finished the banquet off nicely.
Chop sticks and fortune cookies were a necessity of course.

Dear Parents
It was lovely to see so many parents attending this week’s class assembly. 4S led a super,
informative presentation, complete with music, drama and poetry and it was great to see how
confident the children were and how well they had learnt their lines.
In today’s assembly, we learnt how Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year. We heard about their customs and
traditions and even learnt a little Chinese! On Tuesday, Craig has planned a Chinese banquet for the Highfield
children, so I do hope you hear more about the menu and their fortune cookies on the day!
'PREP 6 IN THE HALL OF FAME'
Here are Prep 6, ready to sing out at Young Voices at the
Manchester Phones 4 U arena on Tuesday night. Along
with 8000 other children, the arena will be full of the
sounds of their voices, singing many popular songs,
including Troublemaker, Lean on Me, Higher and Higher,
Mr Blue Sky, film fun medley, a pop medley, weather
medley, English folksongs, Hall of Fame, and a groovy
version of the Hallelujah Chorus, amongst many others.
There is even a Hip Hop dance off - plenty of audience
participation required!
We are in for a super night. Next week, we will let you
know how it all went and include some photos from the
day itself!
By Mrs Gray
School Library
Please note that from next week onwards, the Prep 3 children will be able to use the Library in College on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings, between 4.00pm and 5.15pm in order to borrow books. Mrs Brady, the librarian, will be there
to check the books in and out, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Highfield has a large selection of non-fiction books which cover a wide range of interests and Prep 3 will be able to
borrow two books at a time for two weeks. The children will be shown the books they can choose by Highfield teachers
during lesson time.
We do hope as many children as possible will use the library as we have some super books on our shelves. If you
have any queries please call in and see me.

End of school
As you are aware, we are in the process of reviewing our car park arrangements in order to ensure we have a safe
space for morning drop off and collection at the end of the day.
Please can I ask that at the end of the day, we leave a gap between children and their parents so that staff can clearly
see who has yet to be dismissed?
Once children have been dismissed to their parents, I would also politely ask that all parents supervise their children
as a small number are running into the car park area and are in danger of getting hurt.
Finally, please can I remind everyone that there is no parking at the back of Lincoln or in the vicinity of the Health
centre. This space is reserved for nurses, doctors and ambulances in the case of medical emergencies. Thank you.

Fixtures
U9 Rugby v Belmont Grosvenor
Last Friday, 24 January all the Prep 3 and 4 Boys went to Belmont Grosvenor to play rugby.
There was one contact rugby match and 2 Tag rugby matches.
Contact Team
Score: 5 – 4 to Belmont Grosvenor
The first fixture of the Rugby season for the U9s saw a close run, hard fought game, with some excellent play by both
sides. It was impressive to see the core of our backs line play brilliantly as a unit, supporting each other in attacking
play. Excellent tries were scored by Luca Cotton and Toby Thomson with close support from Freddie Kirkup and
Thomas Hill. George Stephens and Arthur Bradwell also made some darting runs on the wing to gain good ground. A
promising start to the season, which we can build on in forthcoming fixtures. Well done boys.
By Mr Hart
Tag Teams
In the Tag rugby it was quickly evident that all the teams were very evenly matched. The boys played some very attractive
running rugby and by the end were beginning to realise that defence was equally important as well. In three of the Games,
Highfield lost by a difference of 1 try and in the final game, won by 10 tries to 7. Everyone tried hard and it was a pleasure
to see the enthusiasm and team spirit.
