Two Family Law practitioners will provide an overview of public issues as well as a presentation on recent developments in case law.
Kieran Harkin, Solicitor
Kieran Harkin graduated from QUB in 2000. Before commencing his apprenticeship at the Directorate of Legal Services, Kieran
worked as an administrative assistant for the NI Social Care Council. He was admitted as a solicitor in September 2006. Since
November 2007 Kieran has worked exclusively in the Family Law Department of the DLS and has carriage of the public law caseload
in the FPC as well as in the Family Care Centre for the Western and Northern Health and Social Care Trusts. Kieran also represents
various Trusts in applications and reviews before the Mental Health Tribunal.
Sarah Hansen, BL
Sarah Hansen graduated from Downing College Cambridge in 2010 before taking up a post as Research Assistant with the Law
Commission for England and Wales. From there she returned to Northern Ireland to practise at the Bar. Sarah writes for the Child and
Family Law Update and is also a tutor at QUB.

Two Inheritance Tax Compliance Investigators from HMRC in Belfast will give guidance on when and how to complete Form IHT400
and IHT205. They will address problems and highlight pitfalls which can occur.
Jarlath Devlin
Jarlath Devlin is a Compliance Investigator within IHT. He joined the Inland Revenue in 1985. He moved to his current position in April
2006, having previously managed the Administration/Registry Team for 3 years. He came to IHT from an Income Tax background.
Kevin Thompson
Kevin Thompson is a Compliance Manager. He joined the Inland Revenue in 1991 and has undertaken a number of roles. Prior to
being made a Compliance Investigator in 2010, he worked in an IHT service team for 5 years, having managed the Administration/
Registry Team for 2 years.

This seminar will focus on the practical realities facing practitioners when dealing with Clients: practitioners will benefit from the
topical and relevant issues raised by both Speakers which will include an overview of the Master Policy, the nature and cost of
claims and issues relating to risk mitigation and management.
Gary Thompson
Gary Thompson FCII is the Vice-President of Marsh Claims Consulting. Since 1999 he has been responsible for managing all
professional indemnity claims and circumstances notified by solicitors insured under the Law Society of Northern Ireland Master
Policy. Gary regularly provides CPD seminars for the legal profession. His publications include materials addressing claims and risk
management issues faced by law firms.
Lester Doake, Solicitor
Lester Doake is the Managing Partner at McKinty and Wright Solicitors. He has over 30 years’ experience in defence litigation
acting on behalf of a variety of large insurers and companies. Lester specialises in Professional Indemnity claims under the
Solicitors’ Master Policy and Industrial Disease claims. He has acted for the professional indemnity insurers in a multi-million pound
copyright case and has particular expertise in relation to insurance policy and indemnity issues.

This session will focus on the Sale of Goods Act 1979. Particular attention will be paid to the rights of consumers under the revised
implied terms provisions and attempted exclusions of liability by traders, unfair trading practices and the legal position of the
manufacturer.
Brian Collins, BL
Brian Collins has taught and examined at undergraduate and postgraduate level for over 30 years. He is the Course Director
for the LLB (Hons) Law and the LLM Commercial Law at the University of Ulster Magee Campus. His publications include the
Guide to Consumer Law in Northern Ireland (SLS Legal Publications) as well as reports commissioned by DETI and the European
Commission. Brian also chairs the Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Magilligan, sits on the Fair Employment and Industrial
Tribunals and is Deputy Chair of the General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland

Two practitioner lecturers will provide an overview of the most important recent developments in criminal practice in Northern Ireland
which will include coverage of evidence, procedure and sentencing matters.
Christopher Coyle, BL
Christopher obtained a First Class Honours in Law & Politics at University of Ulster, Magee before embarking upon the newlyestablished Masters in Human Rights Law at the Transitional Justice Institute in which he was awarded a distinction. After obtaining
a Certificate of Legal Studies from the IPLS and completing pupillage, he has been practising as a Barrister in Northern Ireland.

Christopher was appointed to the Graduate School of Professional Legal Education in June 2008 and is responsible for the
Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure and Company Law modules of the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Practice.
Diane Nixon, BL
Diane Nixon read Law at Wadham College, Oxford and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in October 1997. Diane
practises in London and Leeds. She was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in October 2008. Diane is accredited as a police
station representative and duty barrister by the Legal Aid Agency and the Solicitors Regulation Authority. She is Assistant Chief
Examiner to the Central Examinations Board of the Bar Standards Board. Diane is the Acting Director of the Graduate School of
Professional Legal Education.

The Graduate School of Professional Legal Education (GSPLE),

The Graduate School of Professional Legal Education is the sole provider of professional legal education in the north-west and only
the second provider in Northern Ireland. We have 28 places for trainees wishing to obtain the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional
Legal Practice which will enable them to qualify as solicitors. We also offer the LLM in Professional Legal Practice for established
practitioners who wish to deepen their knowledge of specialist areas or to develop new areas of practice
The Graduate School is staffed by a team of experienced legal professionals, both solicitors and barristers, who deliver the core
subjects of the course. Leading practitioners and members of the Judiciary from the north-west and across Northern Ireland also
assist to give the trainees the benefit of their professional experience. The School works closely with the Law Society to ensure
that the course meets the requirements of the legal profession. We provide a professional education for the professional lives our
trainees will lead. The focus of the course is on equipping students with the necessary practical skills to discharge their professional
functions as solicitors including negotiation, advocacy, and drafting legal documents. We seek to create an interactive and innovative learning environment and will expect our trainees to make a major contribution to that process.
