External Awards NRC Research Associate Program. Provides funding for students seeking to promote excellence in science and engineering by conducting research in sponsored federal laboratories. Provides a 6 to 9 month fellowship, in Washington, D.C., at nonprofit and public interest organizations focusing on peace and security issues. Dr. Sharonda LaBlanc was recently selected for the Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity at UNC Chapel Hill. While at UNC Charlotte, Sharonda was awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in 2008, the 2011-12 Lucille P. and Edward C. Giles Dissertation-Year Fellowship, and was selected to attend the 60th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates. Sharonda received her BS in Chemistry in 2007 and her PhD in Nanoscale Science in 2012. Sharonda and her husband welcomed their first child in December, a daughter named Saniya. OTHER STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT . . . Corliss Allen, MSPH, a doctoral student in the Public Health Sciences program, is a recipient of the 2014-15 Wayland H. Cato Jr. Graduate Fellowship. Corliss has dedicated many years to the public health community and wishes to research the impact of stress and other ecological factors on the engagement level and health behavior of minority women. She received her BS in Psychology and Master of Public Health from Florida A & M University. American Philosophical Society Franklin Research Grants. Provides post-doctoral funding, in all subjects areas, for travel, printing, and other research related expenses. Cato Jr. Graduate Fellowship. She is very interested in photochemistry and nanoscience. Kathleen hopes to teach at the collegiate level in the future. She received her BS in Chemistry from Appalachian State University. Melissa Currie, MS, a doctoral student in the Geography and Urban Regional Analysis program, is the recipient of the 2014-15 Joanna R. Baker Memorial Graduate Fellowship. Melissa has been invited to attend the 2014 Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) PhD Workshop on the Harvard University campus in August. Melissa is a licensed landscape architect and experienced land planner. Melissa earned her BS and MS in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. Yellow Ribbon Program For 2014-15 the Graduate School has increased its commitment for the Yellow Ribbon Program. $6,400 will go towards out-of-state tuition and fees during the academic year for up to 8 graduate and 4 doctoral students. Andrew Honeycutt, a doctoral student in the Mechanical Engineering program, is the recipient of the 2014-15 Herschel and Cornelia Everett First Year Graduate Fellowship for a doctoral student. His research will focus on advanced manufacturing. Andrew received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from UNC Charlotte in 2014. Nicholas Ortiz, a master’s student in the Latin American Studies program, is the recipient of the 2014-15 Herschel and Cornelia Everett First Year Graduate Fellowship for a master’s student. He seeks to gain more knowledge and use his skills in an altruistic manner by helping create a more productive friendship between the United states and Latin America. Nicholas received his BA in History and BA in Political Science from UNC Wilmington. RESIDENCY DETERMINATION OFFICE… Each semester the Residency Determination Office (RDO) accepts applications for North Carolina Residency for tuition purposes. Non-resident students who apply and are approved save over $12,000 in tuition costs per year! Applications are reviewed as they are received and are typically due by the fifth day of the semester by 5:00 pm. The RDO also makes determinations about the military tuition benefit. Lenora attended Vanderbilt University as a Harold Sterling Vanderbilt Scholar and graduated with her BS in Molecular Biology. Danay Downing, a master’s student in the Anthropology program and graduate certificate in Cognitive Science program, is the recipient of the 2014-15 Faye Jacques Memorial Graduate Fellowship. Her research interests are in comparative cognition, language, learning, and intelligence in primates and marine mammals.
