RSS Spotlight
Ms. Amanda Igi – 3rd Grade Teacher
We are starting off a new year with a new RSS Spotlight and who better to start us off
but Ms. Amanda Igi. Ms. Igi teachers 3rd grade and has been with us for 10 years. She even
student taught here at RSS in Mrs. Lister’s room. She loved it here so much that she applied
for a 3rd grade position and lucky for us, she got the job! You may not know this but Ms. Igi
started our RSS talent show with Mrs. Van Breene’s support. She loves watching the kids
perform and finding out about all the talents our students have and what they are capable of.
As I am asking these questions to our teachers each month, there is definitely a theme
on how the teachers feel about RSS – We are like Family. I love hearing this each month from
our teachers and Ms. Igi is no exception.
She loves everything about RSS, the staff, the
students, even the families she gets to know each year. For those parents who have had her, I
would imagine many of us feel the same way about Ms. Igi.
Let’s head back a few years and find out what Ms. Igi loved growing up. She grew up in
Palos Verdes and Manhattan Beach, a South Bay native (her family still lives in the area). She
loved cheerleading and gymnastics and went to high school at Bishop Montgomery. While in
elementary school she began her love of math, which she now teaches to our students. As she
got older, her favorite subjects turned to business and economics.
After High School she
headed to UC, Santa Barbara for college and earned her BA in business economics.
She
traveled across the USA to Washington DC to work for a PR firm during one quarter of college
also.
After college, she moved to England and worked at Cambridge University for one year in
the exchange student office where she helped students studying abroad from the US and
Japan. As exciting as this was, it was also one of her scariest moments as she didn’t have a
place to live or her job at the University right away. She got off the plane and had to figure
out what she was going do with herself and all her luggage. She spent 3 days living in a hostel in
London as she scouted out a ton of temp agencies. She finally found her job at Cambridge and
ended up living in an amazing 10 bedroom house.
She met some fascinating people on her
journey and is still friends with them to this day. When she returned to the states, she headed
to Pepperdine to get her Master’s degree and teaching credential.
In Ms. Igi’s free time she enjoys doing yoga. No, she just doesn’t enjoy yoga, she LOVES
it. She also enjoys a good spinning class and riding her bike along the beach with her yorkie,
Kozmo in her basket. She is an avid USC fan and loves going the football games and hanging out
with her friends.
There are two very interesting things about Ms. Igi that I think we all should know. She
has been sky-diving. What an experience to have done that and she LOVES karaoke. I just saw
a machine in the staff lounge. Maybe she is up to performing for her fellow teachers some day.
As we conclude this spotlight, I would like to say that all of our teachers are amazing at
RSS and throughout the next 3 years, we will cover all of them.
Thank you to all of our
teachers who create a safe and fun environment for our kids to learn and socialize. We are a
family at RSS and together we will teach our children great things.
