OCTOBER 2014
A CLEAN SWEEP FOR
YORK SCRATCH TEAM
The York Union Scratch team completed their clean
sweep of 7 victories in the Yorkshire IDU league with
a convincing 22-14 over Teesside at Billingham on
7th September. Having beaten Sheffield Union in the
match at Fulford on 17th August to win the trophy for
only the second time since 1977.
At Billingham, Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and James
Walker (The Oaks) led the team out in the morning
foursomes and duly recorded another win for the York
team. Damon Coulson and Rob Moore (both Fulford)
added another two points, while Pike Hills pairing
Craig Smith and Oliver Adamson added a single point
with a halved match. With the match tied at 5 points
apiece, it was left to the Adrian Lount ( Pike Hills) and
Josh Plaxton (Fulford) to round off the morning, ending their match on the 18th with another win for York.
Going into the afternoon with narrow 2 point lead,
it promised to be a close match, and as the first four
matches of the singles all went to the 18th, albeit with
two wins and two halves for York, it certainly looked
as though that would be the case. A 2&1 win for the
Teesside pair in the fifth game broke the sequence,
and hinted at a comeback, but the next 2 matches also
went to the 18th with each side picking up another
two points. Chris Lone (Fulford) posted the biggest
win of the afternoon for York with a 4 & 3 win at the
15th putting York on 17 points and close to victory. It
was Team Captain Russ Chilton, playing for the first
time this season, who added the winning points with
yet another win on the 18th. Josh Plaxton had to retire
injured, gifting Teesside a walk over, but Oliver Adamson with a half, and Adrian Lount with a 3&2 win,
closed the match out, and confirmed York’s place at
the top of the League with maximum points from the
seven matches.
The York Union team in high spirits after the win
against Sheffield at Fulford.
Russ Chilton finally gets to receive the IDU League
trophy at Cookridge Hall on 14th September.
York are runners-up at Cookridge
Hall Team Championship
We had expected the York Players to perform well after their league success, and we weren’t disappointed,
although having to make late substitutions because of
injury wasn’t helpful to the teams cause, and the team
finished the day as runners-up to Sheffield by a margin
of 9 strokes, 13 strokes ahead of Bradford in 3rd place.
The competition is contested by teams of six who play
36 holes – a hard day’s golf on the undulating fairways of Cookridge Hall – with the aggregate of the 12
rounds deciding the winner. York’s’ team of Martin
Brown and Craig Smith from Pike Hills, Jamie Miller
and Rob Moore of Fulford, well supported by David
Hague of Malton and James Walker from The Oaks
would have been in top position after the first round
but for an out of character score of 80 from Craig that
left Sheffield with an 8 stroke lead after the morning
round. Martin Brown followed up his morning 71 with
the same score in the afternoon for a 2 under par total
of 142.
Sheffield picked up another stroke on York during the
afternoon, and finished on 881, 9 ahead of York on
890.

David Hague wins Matchplay
The final of the York Union Matchplay was contested
by two junior stars– David Hague from Malton &
Norton, and James Cass from Fulford. The competition took place over two days starting at Aldwark
Manor on Saturday 30th August, and reaching its
conclusion at Scarthingwell on Sunday 31st. To reach
the final, David had recorded wins over Gary Thorner
(Kirkbymoorside) and defending champion Adrian
Lount (Pike Hills) while James defeated clubmate
Tom Foster before getting the better of Rob Heath
(Sandburn Hall).
The final was expected to be a close with both players
having shown good form in the earlier rounds, but it
was the consistent accuracy from tee to green, and the
ability to get up and down when necessary, that saw
David collect the trophy after a 5 & 3 win.

Brothers David and Paul Marsay, both members at the
host club, had always played together as a pair, but
this year decided to play with different partners to see
if they could improve their results in competitions.
Paul, playing with Tim Clarke was out early and
posted a remarkable gross 71 to head the leaderboard,
and was to stay there for most of the afternoon. Easingwold pair Mike Pickering and Trevor Boddison did
record a best of the day gross 70, but the conditions
of the competition meant that they could not compete
for the Trophy, but did pick up a net prize for their efforts. Jim Batt and Andy Wright added a fine 72 (with
the usual “if only” tales of missed putts!) to eventually finish second in the Trophy competition, and late
finishing Geoff Stericker and M Thompson of Fulford
collected 3rd place with a 75. David Marsay had
gone out with Mike Butterworth, and like his brother,
posted a gross 71 – but claimed the Trophy by one
stroke on a last 6 countback. As a consolation, Paul
and Tim collected the best Net, with John Newman
and Pete Taylor of Kirkbymoorside picking up the last
of the net prizes.
Sue wins Fulford Rose Bowl
The York Union ladies’ Fulford Rose Bowl was postponed in June because of waterlogged conditions at
Heworth, but thankfully the weather has been kinder
of late and the re-arranged competition was played on
Sunday 21st September in dry conditions. The winner
with a fine score of 71 was Sue Bellion, who added
the Trophy to the collection of Union Trophies already
sitting in the Malton and Norton cabinet after various successes this year. She finished one stroke clear
of Val Eccles (Forest Park), with Lesley Mather, also
from Malton & Norton, a further stroke back, and collecting 3rd place on a last 6 count back.

Flaxby Park tests our best
Sunday 21st September saw the conclusion of the
Union’s scratch team competitions with the Team
Championship taking place at Flaxby Park. Eleven of
the Union’s clubs took part with teams of four playing
foursomes in the morning and a series of singles in the
afternoon. Rounds of 71 & 75 for 146 from Pike Hills
saw them take a lead after the morning with The Oaks
10 strokes back on 156 (76 & 80), Fulford on 157 (83
& 74) and The York on 158 (80 & 78). But golf cannot be predictable, and as the afternoon progressed,
Pike’s lead was gradually eroded by Fulford. Martin
Brown, first out for Pike Hills handed in a 1 under par
71 to temporarily extend the lead against a 74 from
George Forder for Fulford – but then Alistair Smith’s
78 for Pike Hills was countered by a magnificent 70
from James Cass for Fulford. James’ round included
7 birdies and 5 bogeys and allowed him to collect the
Issott Trophy for the best individual round of the day,
and will also get his playing handicap down from 3 to
2. Worse was to follow for Pike Hills as Adrian Lount
posted another 78 against Damon Coulson’s 74 – with
the lead now down to 2 strokes. The other leading
clubs from the morning could not match the efforts put
in by the Fulford players. Neil Ferguson was best of
The York’s players with 74 and James Walker posted
the best Oaks score of 73. Their clubs ended the day
confirmed in third and fourth places while we waited
for the last players for Fulford and Pike Hills to finish.
Rob Moore and Craig Smith were playing together in
the last group and Rob, playing for Fulford, bettered
Craig’s score – but only by one stroke, which left the
Pike Hills team winners by the narrowest of margins.
Non playing team captain Russ Chilton was pleased
to be making yet another acceptance speech, as he
praised his players for the efforts they had put in, not
only in this competition, but for their efforts through
the year.
