January is a busy another busy month
with the AINA program. School and
community volunteers came out to
clean up and prepare the garden boxes for the spring lessons on Saturday,

Second Graders learned about local
bananas vs imported banana and
the impact bringing the imported
bananas to their homes causes the
environment as well as the loss of
nutrition to the banana.
Fifth graders enjoyed the black
bean salsa prepared by docent
Jessica MacLachlan, while learning to become “mindful eaters” and understanding the body signals for
when they are famished, hungry, satisfied, full or stuffed. Close to the source snacks are encouraged
along with these tips for mindful eating: Make meals a special time, turn off the TV, pay attention to
your food, eat slowly and chew each bite well, and finally feel your body’s signals as it fills up. It’s flu
season so drink plenty of water to flush out germs and get enough sleep!
This week the Kindergarten started planting their spring vegetable gardens. After working the soil
the student planted carrot or lettuce seeds and learned about the parts of vegetable plants and which
part of the plant is eaten, understanding that some plant parts grow above and other grow below the
ground.
