JBU 199 Update for 09-02-2014

September 2, 2014
Fellow Council 199 pilots,
Your Bulletin Board Is Now Up!
We now have a JetBlue ALPA Bulletin board in our crew room. In fact, all bases are in
the process of installing their boards this week. Posted now is information on our future
committees, how to volunteer, voting information, and other useful info. We are
pleased that management has allowed us to hang a union bulletin board lacking any
written agreement. Our thanks to LGB Chief Pilot Jim Daulton for assisting us in
selecting a location for the board and securing the services of JetBlue Properties
personnel to have it mounted quickly. The board is locked, and material can only be
added by MEC or LEC officers. Do not hang any notices or material on our board. No
stickers or other markings please.
Council 199 Elections
As most of you know, the ballots are out, and everyone should have received voting
instructions from ALPA National. As we have mentioned in a previous issue of the
Council 199 Update, the exact outcome of the first officer nomination was unclear
during the week following the nominations. We were waiting for an audit from ALPA
National to verify our tentative announcement of the nomination results from our ballot
counting meeting. The Balloting Committee at ALPA National audited the materials and
had to select a second candidate from the nominees due to the majority nominee
deciding not to run. To clarify the results of the ballot audit and to be sure that
everyone is clear on who is running, and in the interest of giving each candidate fair
publicity on our Council 199 Update, here are the candidates for the Council 199
election:



Captain Representative Nominees: Capt. Larry Toigo and Capt. David Wilson
First Officer Nominees: F/O Richard Praser and F/O Joshua Sult
Secretary-Treasurer: Capt. James (Jamie) Ewart (uncontested)
Thank you to everyone who stepped up to volunteer to serve and to those of you who
participated by taking the time and effort to fill out and mail your nomination ballots.
Remember that the person you vote for is going to represent you at the MEC and at the
ALPA Board of Directors, so be sure to review each candidate’s letter and speak to each
representative if you have any questions about their views, qualifications, or
commitment.
Don’t forget to vote! It’s important that we have strong voter turnout regardless of any
candidates that may be running uncontested. Go to our JetBlue ALPA website by
clicking here: B6ALPA.org and vote today. Polls close September 10 at 10:00 EST.
Stay Engaged
Why is it important to be engaged? Because your base reps cannot represent your
interests and concerns if you are not involved. We cannot speak on your behalf if you
are unaware of the issues and the process. Take the time to read your e-mails, visit the
website, read the bulletin boards, go to meetings, vote, and ask questions. It is not just
a catchphrase; it is the truth—unity begins with you!
Committees Now!
Have you ever said to yourself that you would like to help make a difference? Or maybe
you just want to assist in helping a fellow pilot navigate one of life’s bumpy roads. We
have listed nearly 30 committees and a brief description of each along with an online
interest submission form on our website. Click here to go directly to the committee
overview page.
Uniform Issues
Capt. Larry Toigo has sent an e-mail to Chief Pilot Capt. Rich Carter regarding the
numerous concerns of our members over the lack of quality of our new uniform
products. In his reply, he specifies Eva Capous as our point of contact for uniform
issues. Please take Capt. Carter’s advice and keep Ms. Capous apprised of your uniform
quality, fit, construction, defects, supply, and other issues. Here is Capt. Carter’s reply:
Larry,
Thanks for the feedback. I believe that Eva Capous (who I have copied in this email) is
handling issues such as these and is working hard to make adjustments so that everyone
gets a properly made uniform of acceptable quality. I know that I have similar issues
with respect to pants but the shirts I received had no defects. Please contact Eva if you
(or others) are still having issues that HPI has been unable to address through the
normal process.
Flight Ops, the chiefs in particular, have been supporting those pilots with uniform
issues and working with Eva to get them corrected. Many uniform issues have been
resolved and I am sure that there are still many more to fix. I am told that we are
working with HPI and the manufacturer to ensure they adhere to the quality standards
set forth in the contract. Obviously with things like buttons falling off shirts, they have
not had consistent quality control.
Regards,
Rich

Dues
If you haven’t already set up online auto pay with your personal bank account, the
easiest way to stay current with your dues obligation is to use auto pay. Your dues are
based on 70 hours. If your average credit is more than 70 hours per month, set up your
bill pay to reflect that average number. In addition, send membership an e-mail at
[email protected] and ask them to readjust your monthly estimate (for example, to
83 hours). If you only pay the 70-hour estimate, your account will be reconciled at the
end of the year, and you will be required to make up the difference. Regardless of how
you chose to pay, please ensure you don’t fall behind. We know that auto payroll
deduction is the only acceptable long-term solution, and we’re working on getting that
done.
