Pick Up the Craft Sticks
In my national workshop titled “Classroom Management ER,” I tell
teachers and principals two things:
Select the pack of four different colored
sticks, and assign a color to represent
students’ learning styles or ability levels. Of
course, the students don’t know this, but
the teacher shifts his or her questioning
strategy or task assignment to meet students’
needs. The diagram below shows a suggested
reference using either ability OR personality/
learning style.

FOR DIFFERENTIATION AND RTI
Thick craft sticks are quite possibly the
least expensive, most potent choices in
differentiation and tiered assessment ever
created. Here’s why craft sticks can serve as
cognitive accommodations in your classroom.
That may seem harsh, but it is reality as we know it today. Many
students have undiagnosed mental or learning issues. In some
cases, the students fall into the dreaded “gray area,” that place on
the assessment continuum at which it is clear that the weakness
or problem exists, but is not “bad enough” to trigger a formal
placement. These students will remain in regular classrooms, probably
with little or no outside support. Regular classroom teachers will
provide accommodations, or the more formal RTI (“Response to
Intervention”).
These brain-friendly accommodations are meant to add to formal
IEPs or 504 plans, if they exist, or to fill in the gaps when no such
plans are available. Like the section on the Sensory Brain, these
strategies harness the powers of the auditory, tactile and visual
modalities with a fresh approach.
