Lecture – Armenian genocide and Australia’s humanitarian response
Manning Clark House will be presenting a lecture this Friday on Armenian genocide and Australia’s
humanitarian response. The lecture will be given by an expert on the Armenian genocide,
Vicken Babkenian.
Nibbles and drinks will be provided.
Manning Clark House is very proud to present a talk by Vicken Babkenian, independent researcher for the
Australian Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. He will be speaking about his research for a new
book on Australia’s humanitarian response to the Armenian Genocide, coauthored by historian Peter
Stanley.
Vicken has written extensively about the Armenian genocide including “Edith May Glanville: Champion of
the Armenian Relief Fund,” Journal of the Ashfield and District Historical Society, 2008, and “A
Humanitarian Journey: the Reverend James Edwin Cresswell and the Armenian Relief Fund,” Journal of
the Historical Society of South Australia, 2009.
The talk will be held in the historic home of Manning and Dymphna Clark where an exhibition of
photographs and documents from the genocide is currently being exhibited.

NewAccess – a new way to access free psychological services
About the program
NewAccess is an early intervention program which provides easily accessible, free and quality services for
people with mild to moderate depression or anxiety and who are currently not receiving treatment.
NewAccess is a beyondblue program administered by ACT Medicare Local.
What does the program involve?
NewAccess is a confidential and independent service offering up to six sessions of self-guided, low
intensity treatment and support. This treatment may be delivered face-to-face or over the phone. The
NewAccess approach involves the use of practical self-help strategies, which are designed to bring about
positive and immediate changes in the person’s quality of life, by looking at changing unhealthy thinking
habits, feelings and behaviours.
Each new client of the program will participate in an initial assessment, usually within 24-48 hours. This
will enable a tailored program to be developed to meet the individual’s needs. If the coach determines
that the client requires more intensive service and support (eg one-on-one therapy with a psychologist)
this will be arranged.
How to access the program
There are a number of ways to access the program. Interested individuals can self-refer or alternatively
the referral pathway can be through the employer, community services representative, a GP or other
health professional.

The ACT Human Rights Act Tenth Anniversary: Continuing the Dialogue
This year is the tenth anniversary of the enactment of Australia’s first human rights act. To mark this
occasion the ACT Human Rights Commission is partnering with the Australian National University to
present a symposium on the Human Rights Act 2004 to be held on Tuesday 1 July 2014—ten years to the
day that the Act entered into force.
Speakers include the former Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, Chief Justice Helen Murrell, Attorney-General
Simon Corbell, Professor Hilary Charlesworth and Professor Andrew Byrnes.

Tracing your family in Europe – Genealogy Workshop
Genealogy and history expert, Raoul Middelmann, will talk about how to search official, church and other
records for details of births deaths and marriages in the different parts of Europe.
He will also discuss the social, environmental and political influences on migration from Europe to
Australia.
Raoul is happy to answer questions and tailor his talk to the specific interests of the participants and will

Devdas – The Musical
After opening to sell-out shows in Sydney in 2013, Devdas The Musical, the heart-breaking tale that has
fascinated Bollywood for over 50 years, is being re-told in an original musical at Canberra.

Free training course: Engaging people to talk about problem gambling issues
Free training is available for community sector workers assisting people who may have problems with
gambling.
Many people with gambling problems seek help for other problems such as financial difficulties,
relationship, housing, mental health or drug and alcohol problems before seeking help for their gambling
problems. It is likely that community sector workers in these non gambling specific areas will encounter
people with gambling problems. This training will increase awareness and skills for these workers
equipping them to help their clients begin the process of change.
The workshop will cover the following topics:







Recognising problem gambling
Raising the issue of gambling
Assessment of gambling and related concerns
Measuring readiness for change in relation to gambling
Working with reluctance and resistance to changing gambling
Overview of best practice in the gambling context
Gambling specific referral options

Free training course: Beyond smoke and mirrors – dealing with problem
gambling
The 'Beyond Smoke and Mirrors' training course provides participants with an understanding of the
reasons why their clients may not disclose their problems with gambling or may not fully disclose the
extent of the problem. An understanding of the reasons for and the mechanisms of deception can also
assist non specialist community sector workers and counsellors work more effectively with clients
affected by the gambling problems of a family member. The background for this material is drawn from
the experience of financial, legal, welfare, and personal counsellors who work with the negative
consequences of problem gambling.
This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the training course 'Engaging People to Talk
about Problem Gambling Issues' and 'Opportunistic Interventions in the Problem Gambling'. Community
sector workers who attended these courses are encouraged to attend the 'Beyond Smoke and Mirrors'
course. Attendance at these earlier courses is not mandatory.

The cycle of problem gambling
The hidden downside of problem gambling
Common patterns of deception
Protection and support for partners, families and children

2015 National Multicultural Festival
A kaleidoscope of colours, sounds, sights, flavours and fun is set to transform Canberra when the 2015
National Multicultural Festival unfolds in the city centre next February.
The festival will feature all the key events and performances it’s renowned for, including: the Food and
Dance Spectacular, Greek Glendi, Carnival in the City, Chinese New Year and Pacific Island Showcase.
During the 2014 festival, more than 250,000 people flocked to the heart of the city to revel in Canberra’s
love affair with its cultural diversity.

Yellow Edge and StudyCanberra scholarship
Applications are now open for the Yellow Edge and StudyCanberra scholarship which offers one Canberra
resident the opportunity to attend the Global Leadership Practices Program (GLPP) in China.
The ACT Government has partnered with local corporate and government training and education provider
Yellow Edge to offer one passionate Canberran the chance to attend the 2014 GLPP at the prestigious
China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP). The scholarship is part of the Government’s
StudyCanberra program which aims to promote Canberra as a leading education destination for domestic
and international students. Applications are open to any ACT resident who works in the private or notfor-profit sector and is passionate about spreading the program’s key messages abroad.
The successful candidate will gain an insight in to Government structures and decision making systems;
the Chinese Leadership System; the Australia-China strategic relationship; and China’s social, agricultural
and industrial development.
After attending the programme, participants will enjoy stronger global literacy, a national and
international network of peers and increased professional confidence.

The Youth InterACT Grants aim to provide young people aged 12 to 25 or organisations who work with
young people with funding to organise projects, events, activities and programs that benefit other young
people in the ACT.
Organisations are also welcome to apply for Grants to run projects, events activities or programs for young
people aged 12 to 25 in the ACT.
The Grants aim to get young people to develop and put into action youth focused projects in their
community.
Up to $1,500 in one-off funding is available per applicant.

You are eligible to participate if you are a woman over the age of 18 years and living in the ACT or
surrounding region.
Community Survey for the Betterment of IWN Services
IWN is a wing of Integrated Cultures ACT Inc. The Network aims to integrate women of South East Asian
origin, from diverse cultural backgrounds and interests, with the larger Australian community, to build a
stronger Australia through awareness, empowerment and connectivity. The focus of this group is on
advocacy, positive affirmative action, and prevention of violence against women, mentorship and
dissemination of timely information, thus enabling women’s empowerment with discussion and fun
activities. The goal and vision of this group is to further Respect and Recognition – supporting, celebrating
and encouraging the full participation and contribution of women in every aspect of community.
We would like to invite you to participate in the 2014 IWN community survey. This survey is intended to
provide information about the community we serve and will help support our current work and also to
better plan our future activities and events. Your input will contribute to developing future advocacy and
service delivery agendas and will serve as a significant reference point. The information that we collect
will be kept completely private and will remain confidential. Your personal information will not be
disclosed to a third party unless required by law. Your responses will be converted to de-identified data.

Participation (Multicultural) Grants Program
Applications are now open for the 2014-15 Participation (Multicultural) Grants Program. The aim of the
Program is to enhance the ACT community through the development of innovative projects that
contribute to sustainable communities by highlighting and promoting cultural diversity and social
harmony.
A total funding amount of $260,000 is available under the 2014-15 program. Locally-based community
organisations and groups are strongly encouraged to apply online for funding for activities that fall within
the following categories:



2015 National Multicultural Festival;
Community Radio Stations and Multicultural Community Broadcasters; and
Multicultural Community Participation and Social Harmony.
All applications are to be completed online. If you require assistance, please contact the Office of

FUSION14 is set to be bigger and better than ever before!
On Saturday 18 October 2014 from 4pm – 9pm the City of Wagga Wagga’s spectacular Civic Centre
Precinct is set to burst into life with the sights, sounds, tastes and scents from around the world. Last year
8000+ people of all ages came together to take part in this annual celebration of cultural diversity,
community harmony and the arts.

Young Women's Enrichment Grants – applications open
Girls and young women with a particular passion – be it sports, music or beekeeping – are encouraged to
apply for the 2014 Audrey Fagan Young Women's Enrichment Grants program.
Applications for the grants program are open to girls and women aged 13-18 who are residents of the ACT
and attend an ACT educational facility or are home schooled in the ACT.
The grants provide an opportunity for young women to make decisions, take responsibility, or initiate
projects in collaboration with experienced mentors. Successful applicants have used the grants to take
part in national and international taekwondo championships, to buy musical instruments, to enrol in art
classes, to train as sporting coaches and referees, and to document the skills needed for beekeeping.
This program is aligned with the ACT Women's Plan 2010-15, the objective being to develop women's skills
and expertise and increase their participation in decision-making and leadership roles.
Five successful applicants will receive up to $2,000 each.
The grants are part of the ACT Audrey Fagan Scholarships Program, established in 2007 to honour the
former ACT Chief Police Officer's contribution to women in public life at the highest level and to inspire
other women to make a difference in the community.

New flexible bus system to improve service for transport disadvantaged
Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, has announced a new ‘community
transport’ initiative to better meet the transport needs of the aged, people with disabilities, Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people and other transport-disadvantaged Canberrans.
In conjunction with the introduction of the bus network in the middle of this year, the ACT Government
will also pilot an improved community transport coordination system.
The development of an electronic booking system to coordinate ACTION’s existing special needs transport
buses to flexibly serve people with particular transport needs, such as the elderly and disabled, is the first
stage of the pilot study.
Passengers will be able to book the service up to the day before travel. The flexible routes then vary from
day to day depending on the request of passengers.
When fully developed the booking system will record the details and travel requirements of eligible
passengers and, where possible, match their requirements with the transport needs of other passengers
as well as vehicles in the area.
The regular transport network doesn’t work for every person in every place – for example an older person
without a car who has trouble walking to a bus stop. This flexible transport network is designed to ensure
these people can still travel conveniently, to shop, visit family or friends or run other errands.

The initial trial is funded using a $500,000 allocation from the 2014-15 ACT Budget. It will improve
community bus services in suburbs within the inner north, inner south, Belconnen, Woden and Weston
suburbs.
When fully operational the community transport coordination system will manage all community
transport resources, including government, community and private services.
The service will mean far more than a simple lift from one point to another; it is an opportunity to enhance
social inclusion in Canberra.

NewAccess – a new way to access free psychological services
About the program
NewAccess is an early intervention program which provides easily accessible, free and quality services for
people with mild to moderate depression or anxiety and who are currently not receiving treatment.
NewAccess is a beyondblue program administered by ACT Medicare Local.
What does the program involve?
NewAccess is a confidential and independent service offering up to six sessions of self-guided, low
intensity treatment and support. This treatment may be delivered face-to-face or over the phone. The
NewAccess approach involves the use of practical self-help strategies, which are designed to bring about
positive and immediate changes in the person’s quality of life, by looking at changing unhealthy thinking
habits, feelings and behaviours.
Each new client of the program will participate in an initial assessment, usually within 24-48 hours. This
will enable a tailored program to be developed to meet the individual’s needs. If the coach determines
that the client requires more intensive service and support (eg one-on-one therapy with a psychologist)
this will be arranged.

NDIS registration now open for ACT service providers
Community service providers planning to operate in the ACT under the National Disability Insurance
Scheme (NDIS) when it officially begins on 1 July can now register online.
The registration process will help providers deliver services to NDIS participants who elect to have their
funds managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Registration means providers are able to deliver services to NDIS participants who have their funding
package, or a portion of it, managed by the NDIA.
Registration applies to all existing ACT service providers, as well as those planning to set up in the ACT. It
does not matter if you are a sole practitioner or a large national organisation, registration is your best
opportunity to engage with the more than 5,000 people who will eventually become NDIS participants
here in the ACT.
Participants can have confidence that registered service providers have met requirements in relation to
qualifications, approvals, experience and capacity to deliver approved supports. People with disability and
their families and carers will be able to search online for services to deliver their supports, ensuring
greater choice and control.
Registered providers will also get access to the NDIS online Provider Portal, which will assist with invoicing

Counselling and Treatment Service (CTS), Alcohol and Drug Service, ACT Health: CTS qualified
health professionals provide alcohol and other drug counselling for people who are concerned
about the level and/or consequences of their use and any associated psychosocial problems. The
service is available for adults, young people, family members and carers. A range of therapeutic
groups are also provided.

ACT Health 24 Hour Help Line: This 24 hour Intake and Help line is staffed by qualified,
professional workers from the ACT Health Alcohol and Drug Service. It provides:

Information on alcohol and other drug and associated issues;

Crisis intervention and referral

Support to people directly or indirectly affected by alcohol and other drug issues.

Directions ACT: Directions ACT provide drug and alcohol counselling services for individuals,

affected by alcohol and drug use.

Counselling Online: Counselling Online is a service where anyone seeking help or information

Development of a discussion paper on the new ACT Multicultural
Framework/Strategy 2014-2018
A discussion paper is being developed for circulation throughout the Canberra community on the new ACT
Multicultural Framework/Strategy 2014-18.
ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs Joy Burch will release the discussion paper in late July 2014 to seek
feedback, ideas and changes from all sectors of the community throughout August and September 2014.
Once that process is completed, a special multicultural summit will be held in late November 2014 to
review a draft version of the new framework/strategy with ideas and amendments incorporated before
publication in early 2015.
Release of the discussion paper will be widely publicised in local media as well as here in e-news.

Starting the conversation about advance care planning
The "Be My Voice" campaign was launched on 14 May 2014 to inform the ACT community about the
importance of Advance Care Planning.
The campaign is designed to help family and friends initiate conversations with their loved ones about
their values and wishes around future healthcare. Developing an Advance Care Plan will ensure that an
individual can make decisions regarding their future healthcare while they still have the capacity to do so,
and allows them to communicate those wishes to family, friends and health care professionals.
Canberrans are urged to think about the treatments that they would or would not want and get these
down onto paper. While these conversations can be difficult and perhaps confronting, having a plan
ensures that your wishes are communicated clearly and assists loved ones when faced with difficult
decisions later on.
ACT Medicare Local, in collaboration with the ACT Heath's Respecting Patient Choices® Advance Care
Planning Program, has produced a TV and print advertisement campaign and a website as part of the "Be
My Voice" campaign.

their homes to visiting international students and provide them a safe and nurturing place to live during
their stay in Canberra.
Placing international students with a homestay host family helps bridge the cultural and language gap,

and their children gain a greater understanding of cultural diversity through the relationship that develops
with their student. Many host families have been providing accommodation for international students for
several years.

women in Australian labour market.
We are seeking your assistance to identify what makes a work-place environment diverse and equal in
order to ensure a fair workplace in which different backgrounds are respected and viewed as an
organisational asset.

The ACT Microcredit Loan Program provides a limited number of no-interest and low-interest loans from
Westpac for eligible applicants who wish to start or expand an existing business. The Lighthouse program
includes:

Access to networking events.
Key target groups include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, migrants, young people, women
and lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and intersex individuals on low-incomes.

What is the Women’s Return to Work Grants Program?
The Program aims to enable the provision of practical financial support to women returning to the
workforce by providing funding for them to attend short courses, pay for child care to attend interviews as
well as more formal training or education. It may also provide support for the purchase of equipment or
clothing directly related to the woman’s return to work for women on low incomes including Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander women, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women
with disabilities, younger women and older women requiring assistance in returning to paid work
following caring for a child/ family member or community member for more than twelve months in the
period of their lives.
Each grant provides up to $1,000 in assistance for women enrolling in training or other employment
associated costs that will improve their workforce skills or capacities.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for a $1,000 grant under this Program, an individual must meet the following criteria:









low income (based on Centrelink means testing);
have been out of the workforce due to caring responsibilities for 12 months or more;
not worked for more than four months (full-time or part-time equivalent) during the past 12 months;
not currently employed;
not currently on maternity, or paid/unpaid leave;
plan to return to paid work within the next 12 months;
has been a resident of the ACT for more than three months;
is not receiving financial support for all training and related costs through a Jobs Services Australia
provider or through ACT Government assistance such as Canberra Institute of Technology scholarships
while participating in this Program
not previously received a grant through the ACT Women’s Return to Work Program.
